I don't think this idea is a good idea at all, certainly shouldn't be from Simu's point of view. The current system is actually brilliant. If the BS (in this case) were forced-redeemed and you had to start at zero each event, no one would dig/do arena once they had what they already wanted. Moreover, the price of BS would crater even worse than it used to mid-way through the event (further disincenting people from sewering or arena-ing more).

The current system incents building a stockpile for the next run and makes BS hold a lot of its value throughout a run. Even if we "stumbled" into the system as it now stands, it's brilliant.

>(1) The EG model just wasn't sustainable since the necessary investment in time wasn't paid for by the participants. We can complain all we want but the fact is, it costs them resources to do these things. They took a loss for years on that model at EG and it's not viable to keep doing that.

>(2) There's a LOT of development going on in the game, including buggy system fixes-and not just new pay venues.

>(3) As microtransactions have risen I've seen a very definite acceleration in development. Me, I'm very happy to see it. Something has to pay for this development-that's our pay events. Our monthly sub fees are important but they just aren't enough.

>(4) You don't need to attend a pay event to take advantage of a pay event. Both fluff and mechanical additions filter through to the entire player-base. It is one reason the silver economy matters as someone else eloquently pointed out.

>(5) The basic game is roleplaying in a hack-and-slash environment; you make your own balance between the two. None of that requires attendance at the pay events. Even outside events this is a great environment for us.

excellent summary. +1

The problem is that they continue to gate things even when introducing micro transactions and pay to win mechanics. That is unsustainable in the long run as well.
Only releasing a few of some items.
Scaling prices.
Combined scaling prices and limited releases.

These are all mechanics that end up fostering a lot of ill will when it comes to the whole arrangement in general. It's why I've stopped buying simucoins at least. I'm not going to keep paying into a system that keeps asking for more and more and more.

>Gemstone is getting into a position that it could really blow up (in a good way) if there was decent advertisement and marketing on popular gaming platforms such as Steam. I may be in the minority, but if you want long term growth, you should aim for the kids (just like cigarettes). I started playing when I was 14, and I'm still here (and now spending money regularly, apparently).

>Without at least growth like this, I think the game might wither away (or at least feel like it is).

GS might be the first game to go under because its entire player base died of old age in real life.

At least if Simu doesn't beat us to the punch by taking their Westminster Dog Show winner and puppy mill it to death like they've recently decided to start doing.

I'm curious how old style EG and similar events resulted in "a loss" when Simu doesn't actually pay their GMs anything noteworthy in the first place.

What are all these real world expenses that Simu has to pony up every time EG rolls around that causes them to lose money because they were "only" getting $50 per head?

Time is an actual cost and an actual resource

They even mentions that was the case in the actual quote you just...well, quoted.

I don't know the numbers. I don't know how many man hours are poured into EG. But they thought their return on investment was just not enough to justify what resources (again, mainly time) they were putting towards it.
