Groups are not always possible. Try finding a group at times in zul'logoth, you can't. And if those creatures happen to be more then one in a room, just another decay Common in grutiks and krynches, less common in trolls, but still enough to concern you.
Not all creatures are stunable, limb disurpt isn't an option sometimes, as lower spell aim means lower focused cs. E-wave doesn't knock them down all the time.
Does this bonus still apply if say 4 of the creatures are knocked down or in round time? And one isn't? As how the heck are they a threat while in round time... heh...
Pooka's just got a lot harder...

Why do people look at the name ascendent, and say the first syllable, or part of it makes me look like something? As hardly means what the try to make it be, and only proves their level of maturity is low, and besides the first part is ascend

There are some places where even if your the only person in the area its not unusual to see 3 to 7 creature swarms. Pinefar, thurfels cellar.. im sure theres more but thats where i know for certain about. Fighting just 2 at once is a rarity in pinefar with glacies sliding all over the place.

Yeah, exactly-- what if you're a pure caster grouped with a warrior who loves to mstrike? He takes a shot at something in a crowd he knows that he's alright facing, the pure goes to run and leaves his partner behind.
On the flip side, if he stays and ends up with RT, facing the swarm long enough to see a DS drop... the ever-favored square (who just wanted a skill to deal with swarms) is standing over the fallen body of his freshly-nerfed pure partner.
Isn't that the "Why" behind this whole system? Dealing with the problems squares had facing large swarms (of magical things, especially) by way of knocking down the other end of the spectrum in terms of DS?
Glad I didn't buy into that whole runestave nonsense...

People. If there are even two of you in a swarm of 6 creatures it is still unlikely that either of you will be penalized. Two players is 2 points, so it takes 4 points of creatures attacking ONE person to hit the first penalty. That means that 4 of the 6 would have to attack one of you within a 10 second period for the penalties to start. If the two of you manage to stun/kill one or two of them in that same 10 seconds, the odds drop even further. Sheesh. This change really isn't that bad.

Not really. In an invasion if there are 30 creatures in a room with 6 people(this is common) then it would take 12 attacks on 1 of the 6 people within a 10 second period to see even a minor pushdown on DS. The odds that happening are not that great. Especially with the same 6 people attacking and killing the invaders during those 10 seconds.

I'll have to say I don't like the engagement system of DR. Sounds too clunky. I have played AOH a while back, and their engagement system makes sense. I'll see if I can remember basically how it works, or did when I played.
When you get into a room, you can only be hit by ranged weapons and can only hit stuff with ranged attacks (like my goo wand and bombs!). If you advance, you get into melee range, where you do your normal fighting. If you need to get out, you retreat back out of melee and take off. Normal advancing and retreating takes, as a guess, 5 seconds. Can't attack something while you're out of melee range, but you can attack if something's retreating, but not gotten out of range yet.
If you're in melee range, you can only be attacked by 4 critters, total. One on your front, one on your left, one on your right and one to your back. You can switch between which critter you're attacking. Same thing works with the critters. If you advance on a critter already being attacked, you fall into another position, whether front, left, right or back. I don't recall exactly if there were penalties or bonuses associated with what position you are relative to the critter.
Also, there are certain maneuvers, items or magic effects that let you get in and out of range without having to advance or retreat. My personal favorite was the bottled smoke of Obfuscates, which worked like a smoke screen when you threw it to the ground.
On a side note, AOH also has combinations of moves you can do that can be more effective than the individual moves. For example, if I jab twice, then follow with a front kick, my kick is more likely to hit than if I'd just thrown the kick alone. I'd love to see something like that for CMAN and the unarmed combat system.

I read this announcement, and my first thought was , "Wow, they released it on time...go Simu!".
Then I thought, wow, this is going to be a drag during invasions! Along with death sting! Eesh, and how many times have I stumbled into a room of 30 to 40 critters in an invasion and said, 'wow! I'm good as dead!". Not to mention the critters with bolt-only DS...and virtually unavoidable attacks?
But then, in a moment of consideration for those I play GS with...I realized how the casters were going to suffer. Wow, its gonna hurt.
Now, it's been stated that area spells (or running away) is the answer...but as it has been stated, area spells will end up killing other people also. Wow, what a solution! Also, I don't picture some big, bad, evil sorceror staring down a group of krolvin and saying, "Mommy help me!". That makes as much sense as my warrior tucking tail and running (Screw the innocent, Death Sting is gonna put me outta commission!)
Now, I know that i'm ONE customer, and I am well aware that neither the gaming populace or Simu really gives a damn whether I stay or go (aside from the loss of cash). Having said that, this is the last nail (there have been many, trust me) in the coffin.

I will look again, but I don't see where it says that.

As the oft-stolen saying goes in prize fighting...
"Everyone's gotta plan until they get hit."
So if the two of you get as much RT as can stack in the old city, then one of you happens to get stunned... your whole theory falls apart.
here's what I wanna know...
If you have this penalty from say 3 creatures attacking you and you run to the next room where there's 3 more, does the penalty carry over as they start swinging (and then refresh itself as a result), or does it vanish when you leave the room?
I'd say a "good" answer to this question would require more foresight than I suspect went into this system.

I mean a 3 soft-second solution to the problem, as per E-waves, Quakes, mass holdings, mass calms, your new Nature's Touch-- even the ability to hide is a way to handle a swarm.
Cool manuevers, true. Great Redux, true. Doesn't much matter facing six creatures, trying to m-strike them all into a stun when half aren't stunnable and only two or three are in an offensive enough stance. You end up with one stunned creature, two slightly wounded and really angry ones and three more that weren't even touched, plus your insane RT for striking at them all.
Lucky for them this new system won't matter-- that much MoC training and they won't know the difference between 1 and 50 critters. heh.

>>Not really. In an invasion if there are 30 creatures in a room with 6 people(this is common) then it would take 12 attacks on 1 of the 6 people within a 10 second period to see even a minor pushdown on DS. <<
How do you figure that? From what I read, the only advantage multiple players give you is to give other targets for the monsters to swing at. If four creatures happen to swing at you, you're going to have your offensive DS, assuming you were in defensive to start. If 12 attack you, all you'll have is your spells.
Good luck living through that.

Ok, a few things pertaining to Josh's post. First, he said
"If there are even two of you in a swarm of 6 creatures it is still unlikely that either of you will be penalized. Two players is 2 points, so it takes 4 points of creatures attacking ONE person to hit the first penalty. That means that 4 of the 6 would have to attack one of you within a 10 second period for the penalties to start."
The announcenent said
"If a target is attacked by more than one attacker within a short period (less than 10 seconds), the target's defenses may be reduced. The amount of reduction in the target's defenses is based on the number of attackers, the level of the attackers compared to the defender, and the defender's skill in Multi-Opponent Combat...For every effective attacker beyond the first, the defender's effective stance is reduced by 25%, similar to the way that ambushing from hiding currently modifies a defender's effective stance. If the total reduction would go below 0 (full offensive stance), then the remainder percentage will be applied to the defender's offensive-stance Parry, Evade, and Block DS. It will not reduce those values below 0"
Now I take that to mean, using Josh's example, that if those four attack me, even with him in my group, my 100% defensive stance will be 25% by the fourth attack (100% first attack, 75% second, etc.). Is this what everyone else is reading too?

There's a whole slew of empaths that are great hunters, any list wouldn't be all inclusive.

>I guess they wan't to get rid of the want for invasions, so they can sit back and let the game govern itself, instead of taking time out to throw an invasion here or there... ~Jeff
Actually, with this I'll be more inclined to run invasions.
Currently, its hammeer the enter key to drop as many critters as I can so in a room with 75 level 50 beasts, ONE level 75 wizard cones them all in safety.
Boring.
Now, the wizard will have to retreat, or have support, or better yet, I can just drop less critters since folks will be using more tactics. Right now, invasions are only fun IF I target a small group of folks in a small area, with no hope of any high level PCs coming in an decimating them all with area-of-effect-song/spell-of-your choice.
I rarely invade anyone outside of Plat anymore for those reasons.
Honestly folks, haven't seen it yet, wait to scream a bit.
Then post where you think it can be improved.

>Why not try grouping up with someone to try and negate your DS penalties? I understand that a lot of us are much more into solo hunting than group hunting, but maybe considering it as more of an option would help out. |
That won't work. There's three scenarios:
1) You're hunting alone. You run into a couple of critters, and that's bad.
2) (your suggestion) You're hunting in a group. Fine. More of you. Of course, the mongens spew out more critters when there's more hunters, so you're still outnumbered. Still bad.
3) There several of you in the same area, and you're not grouped together. That's much worse. The mongens are spitting out increased numbers of critters, but it's easier to be outnumbered now.
So, you have your choice of bad or worse. Doesn't matter if you go solo or with a group. What does matter is that whoever is in the same hunting area should be fighting together instead of individually.

So make something that can kill the wizard before dropping the 75 beasties.
Better yet, make yourself a PC and give him a run for his money.
Isn't that what the new Sting is supposed to help you with?
I know one of those treants spiked me to death in Mule and put me out of comission for a good twenty minutes. Do invasions even last that long anymore?

I've got a rogue as my main, and a mixture of semis and pures as my secondaries. I'm in favour of this system. I hate hunting in groups. I'm still in favour of this system. I only have two characters out of 10 that has any MOC training. I'm, um, still in favour of this system.
I'm not so sure about the MOC requirements, but as has been said, the system's going to be monitored and tweaked as needed.
What other suggestions are out there on how to improve the system, rather than just saying it's horrible and should go away?

Akiromora says, "Someone should have come dressed up as Knaydl. Of course, we'd have to wait four hours for that person to arrive."

I bet they didn't think of that part yet...

take the hunting area shan in solhaven, I bring my paladin there, with my level 100 empath and my level so and so healer... I live... people around me will get disarmed and killed and those clercis and empaths that fog in will get nailed and it will create a chain reaction.... oooh I can't wait... its going to be total chaos

I would but the fact that a system like this can make it, and 730 can't make it out, that doesn't make me want to sugar coat anything and wait until I get to the posion center. Its not even like its feasable for a pure to even attempt to train off the penalty. Lower the MOC costs and it will be more in-line.
Its not longer a physical square skill. Its a skill that everyone should have an equal chance at having points to spare to train in. It effects me the pure as much as the square.
~Jeff
Why do people look at the name ascendent, and say the first syllable, or part of it makes me look like something? As hardly means what the try to make it be, and only proves their level of maturity is low, and besides the first part is ascend

No, Kitrina posted that players are assigned 1 point each and creatures at +/- 10 levels are assigned 1 point each. She also said that when the number of creature points reaches 2-1 you see the DS pushdown. 1 person will see it with 2 creatures, 2 people will see it with 4 because it rounds. It is also based on actuall attacks within a 10 second period, so if those 4 creatures don't all attack the same person in that period, no one will see a pushdown.
