Heyo!

The difficulty of training early ranks of foraging is being addressed, both in terms of baiting fishing poles and foraging itself.

>>Closer to 100 mech and you stop failing altogether and only get a single 2-4 RT, much more preferable in my eyes.

I still have failures in using live bait with 150+ mech.

i'd like to see on the upcoming lore split, us using all that useless junk we forage for something (not have to but have the option to)
gloves with rusty nails on em, or a cloak emblazoned with coins you foraged up

Over Fishing? Understocked locations? My Fishing Frustrations 06/26/2008 10:43 AM CDT
I'm trying to raise my meager 11 ranks of AL on my youn paladin, so I'm fishing in Ilaya Taipa.

There doesn't seem to be much technique required for fishing...it's just hit or miss. For example, I'll throw my line in the water and instantly get a hard tug. Then, as a test, I threw it in and after a couple minutes left my desk to take something...figuring that the worst that could happen is my pole gets yanked out of my hands (no other active experience, sleep mode no scripts running). 5-10 minutes later, I come back and surprise surprise, not even a nibble. Ilaya Taipa is a river town, and definitely has a lot of resources for fishing, but it seems kind of odd that I only tend to get a bite every 10-20 minutes (which is not helpful when you're trying to gain skill).

Is this little fishing town just a bad place to fish?

Is there such a thing as GM's needing to restock the fish?

What else can I try?

I'm currently using fish eggs as bait...if there's something better, I'd love to hear it.

I actually always found Ilaya to be a terrible place to fish. That actually makes some sense to me, as it is, as you said, a Fishing town.

Some things that help:

+ If you don't get a bite in fifteen seconds or so, reel back in and re-cast.
+ If you're not having much luck at one spot, try someplace else.
+ Different fish like different baits. (Or so it is said). If you're not having luck with one bait type, try a different type.

My favorite fishing spot of all time was off the oxenwaithe bridge in Crossing.

Keep the line in the water ~5 to 10 seconds max. Then reel in and recast. You maximize the chance of a bite that way.

I use a very simple set of 10 or so triggers that fish for me over in TF. It casts the pole, waits 5 seconds and then reels it back in (rinse, repeat) if I don't get a bite within those 5 seconds. There really is no advantage to waiting more than 5 seconds from what I can tell.

I have consistently been able to break my own fishing records using this method, so if casting time affects the weight of fish, I haven't noticed it's affect yet. I have also yet to break or lose a pole using my methods.

This is with 400+ Foraging and 80 ranks of Animal Lore.

Free Fishing Poles and Bait? 12/16/2008 09:34 PM CST
Are there supposed to be free fishing poles and bait at the landfall dock in crossing? If so they do not appear to be present.

I believe that one was put in as a nod to the prime population issues. Plat doesn't have that one either (though to be fair, all Plat players have access to the pier whereas not all TFers do).

All I know about Fishing... 04/03/2009 04:33 PM CDT
I learned on my own, mostly. (Starting up from a derail in the necro forum)

Apparently, there's a wiki page http://elanthipedia.com/wiki/Fishing

Free fishing poles and stuff in the Amusement Pier, or the Skirr'lolasu.

My MO is to fish to mind lock foraging, then go elsewhere to take each fish/turtle, skin them twice (can't fail it, and teaches a bit). After that, I take out a scraper and scrape them, usually ruining them.

And then, being a Prydaen on my fishing characters, I eat the fish if I've got one left. The raw fish bits that come out don't taste so good in my experience, so I leave them alone.

Free Fishing Equipment? 02/14/2011 08:41 PM CST
I believe there are some NPCs and areas which will allow you access to free fishing equipment. As an example the amusement pier in Crossings(Premium Only Area) has one.

Does anyone happen to know of any other locations like this which give out free fishing equipment?

Some of the boats -- Crossing-Aesry, I think; maybe others.

The eastern pier in Aesry.
