I'm a little confused why people are this bothered by how random attunement works for this particular spell (generally cast while resting on a node), while other spells use random attunement in the heat of battle... and it sometimes makes those spells less useful (or potentially dangerous) in certain areas or on certain creatures. Seems to me that would be the bigger concern. Then again, it seems like the design goal is to have benefits to attuning.
If it isn't in the cards for every spell to have its element specified on each cast, how about a minor modification to the current system: Unattuning. (Anti-attuning? Opposing?)
As in:
>UNATTUNE LIGHTNING
>You focus for a moment and close your mind off to the element of lightning.
And then basically, you would still be attuned random, but the randomness would be split between the remaining four elements, rather than all five. This could make the spells that use random attune mechanics potentially useful (and not dangerous) in more circumstances... but if you want the benefit of hitting an element every time on these spells, you still need to attune.
Just a suggestion.

I am extremely dissappointed with not being able to select an element when casting 502 (outside of attunement). It basically took what was for me an empty spell slot and replaced it with an another empty spell slot. Fortunately, I guess, there are others that are able to make use of this new spell.
It's a terrible design direction in my opinion. First create a spell that works for most everyone. Then look to add some bonuses to it for attunement if you so desire. I get why some areas are lightning unfriendly. Some of our most powerful spells are (or were in the case of cone of lightning) lightning based. I don't get why you would design a 2nd level spell in such a way that it also that has to suffer from this penalty in order to even be used.

Maybe tie the ability to UNATTUNE or suppress an element to a specific (low amount) of lore training in the relevant lore? Only one element at a time could ever be suppressed though.

I assume for 502 the decision is largely related to the bolt synergy; being able to select one element AND be ready with your intended followup bolt (that also happens to go to the creature's weakness) is a significant benefit of attuning. I doubt the specific goal was to make the spell unusable in certain places or on certain creatures for mages with certain attunements.
How would you feel about this spell if you could unattune (anti-attune?) and limit the randomness, rather than eliminate it entirely?

I am I the only one that feels like it wouldn't be OP to give wizards a dumb down version of bonding here? Give flares on your weapon but no the AS buff if it is over the enchant cap. Say only the element your attuned to but for me a wizard should be able to imbed there elemental energy into there weapon.

That's not what my comment was about. I asked WHY people were getting excited over this change, when it was so difficult to use well. Sure, maybe I can eblade a white ora weapon and give it flares, but who even uses white ora nowadays? My main characters all have 7x weapons, mostly perfects, that I have enchanted myself. There is no reason foe me to have any of them use a 3x or 4x flaring weapon. So, the change is of little value for me, and probably not going to be much used by any wizard who is of adequate level, simply because they don't have enough elemental lores.

I mainly see people using e-blade: for arrows, for areas that disarm, and with naginatas.
The improved eblade is equally useful for all of these applications. I agree, however, that it doesn't not necessarily lead to new applications. Still the idea of being able to hunt with an essentially throw-away weapon that is 5x~7x with flares somewhere that disarms seems nice to me. With arrows I'm less clear since getting a 5x bow and mastering fletching are pretty easy.
As for naginatas, merchant services usually won't enchant naginatas past 6x. It sounds pretty easy to get that effect now...

This new e-blade is also useful for using those +2 deringo runestaves with great enhancives and making it into a +22 runestaff with great enhancives and decent flares. There's plenty of those low enchant enhancive weapons that are never used because they are a pain to enchant. Now they're all fair game unless you're already walking around with auction quality gear.
In that case, yes, an 11th level minor circle spell may not be of much use to you.

Agreeing with Daid here, I wanted to find new applications to use on characters and gear I already use daily and find I don't have something readily available. Could there an additional/seperate skill check to add flares to a weapon without the enhance increase? Temp flares added to the few 7x perfect blessable weapons I use would be great. Add fire when I"m tasked with one task and remove to bless when I have an undead task.

Here's the type of weapons i'm talking about.
a kelyn-tipped ora twohanded sword - +10, +4 Strength Bonus (28), +1 Stalking and Hiding Rank (2), +2 Spiritual Lore rank (10)
a chalk white imflass troll-claw - +12, +6 Summoing Lore Bonus (21), +4 Ambush Bonus (6), +6 Dodging Bonus (13)
a carved mossbark short bow - +20, +3 Range Weapon Bonus (4), +9 constiution (27), +7 Agility (17)
fine carmiln runestaff - +6, +4 Influence Bonus (14), +7 Max Mana (17)
an ornate deringo runestaff - +8, 3 Summoning Lore Bonus (6)
a sturdy mossbark runestaff - +15, +9 Physical Fitness Bonus (18), +12 Influence (31), +3 Max Mana (4), +4 Intuition (4)
a burled villswood runestaff - +18, +6 Magic Item Use Bonus (17), +8 max Mana (22)
a baby blue carmiln runestaff - +6, +7 Max Health (11)
a large hoarbeam runestaff - +12, +5 Influence Bonus (21)
a grass green rowan runestaff - +5, +4 Necromancy Lore Ranks (34), +5 Intuition (6)
a banded mossbark runestaff - +15, +3 Spirit Mana Control Ranks (12)
a steel-capped rowan runestaff - +5, +4 Health Recovery (20), +1 Transformation Lore Ranks (4)
a lily white deringo runestaff - +8, +9 Harness Power Bonus (27), +7 Spell Aim Bonus (17), +1 Aura (1)
an acid-stained rowan runestaff - +5, +11 Max Mana (40), +4 Dexterity (6)
Most of these would pretty soundly beat the off the shelf +20 runestaff many pures currently stroll around with. These were all available for 50k, most are still for sale. The same goes for all those great weapons you orbed at the fusion shaman which would have been great if they had a few more enchants.

For ranged users who are master fletchers it means creating 5x bolts with flares from store bought 0x wood whereas one would need faewood plus skinning creatures for feathers to make fletchings that already flare or skinning creatures for feathers and using a flaring razor to create fletchings that flare.
Couple that with a 5x bow and you've reached your cap +50 with flares.

You couldn't set your attunement in GemStone III. It was picked for you. With the exception of a few recent updates (425, 710, 518, more so now with 411 but which element is used when cast hasn't changed), it hasn't really changed much at all since ATTUNEment went live (at the launch of GemStone IV). I do see the point about increasing the usefulness of some low enchant weapon with desirable enhancives, however. That particular possibility never occurred to me; all my enhancive items are of the non weapon variety. I'll have to consider this further and do some experimenting.

Casting on enchanted weapons is not based on an accumulation of all elemental lores, it is based on only one lore. You don't post how much earth lore she has total.
Invar could be ebladed before the changes.

Estild, I bugged this in game, but after an enchanting failures resulting in a -2x enchanted weapon then re-enchanting it back to 0x I was not able to e-blade the item. I was able to bless and consecrate it (and obviously I was able to enchant it), so I am not sure why it would not take the e-blade other than perhaps the formula is not correctly identifying the current enchant?
As a side note - I also attempted to have the weapon e-bladed prior to re-enchanting when it was -2x. With a wizard that had 75+ ranks of their attuned lore, they were not able to e-blade the item. Yet it was still able to be blessed and consecrated (and enchanted).

But I will add that I think this updated 411 is okay. Someone, Throgg I belive, was saying about having 7x weapons which is great, but I know after people losing plenty of them in places like OTF that having a 7x doesn't mean much at that point. Just means it's going to hurt that much more when it gets lost.
But, get a cheap weapon and toss a nice 411 on it, then you aren't so upset when it gets disarmed and stolen while their armor helps them escape and you're carried off by a griffin to never see your weapon again.

Would it be possible to make the spell castable on a player with a weapon instead of them having to always hand you the weapon?

They'd have to remove the CLANG! effect when you clash spells on them since they drop. I assume it was an abuse change because it feels like at one point you could.

I know 902 can be cast at someone because it doesn't change the the property of the weapon. 902 basically adds +15 to your AS whereas 411 actually changes the magic characteristic of the weapon.
With the new changes to 411 I wanted to see if I could actually eblade an ora or imflass weapon.
I found a cheap ora weapon at the pawnshop and took her to the AI, out of curiosity. The weapon inspected as orange (2x) and no other properties to prevent 411 from taking. I cast 411 on it and it successfully took. The AI crystal then showed the weapon as indigo (6x).
If you were to cast 411 on someone's weapon and they can't hold the enchantment change, they'd drop the weapon. This would be construed as mechanics abuse, which is most likely the reason why you can't cast it at a weapon someone is holding. If someone hands you a weapon and you eblade it and they can't hold it when you give it back, you can simply dispel the eblade or put it in a container for them.

Hey Contemplar, are there any updates on this bug? I bugged a similar item, though not fusion, in game and it was re-enchanted to 0x after an enchanting failure with the ability to be 1) enchanted, 2) blessed, 3) consecrated - but I cannot e-blade the item.
I would expect that any item which is eligible for blessing and enchanting could be e-bladed as a general rules of thumb provided you have the proper training for the current enchant? Is that a bad assumption?
