i found it hard to find any clue as to how to get started before i first joined. Even after finding the "guildhall" that wasn't. In the end i resorted to going around stalking a few commoners with my thief til i figured out the area where they were disappearing for the first 2 days after the guild came out. There was nothing else in-game that i could find as a clue, even after reading the in-game "book" by the one who was "seen" in the MM visions. And I wasn't in-game for the times when the NPCs in prime came around, I was at work... so, I pretty much had to figure things out for myself.
