Well, no, not really. There's a nigh-infinite amount of money you can squeeze from the game. That's where the (perceived) issue is.
I don't know why they don't make stat training costs scale with circle and add guild dues to circling and learning abilities if trickling money out of the economy is such a concern.
That or make weapon and armor damage sane (i.e. no more total item destruction) and make it happen much more commonly so people have to pay to get their crap repaired. Though there should really be a lower cap on the amount of time repairs take.

I was referring to coin per unit time, not total amount. I see that there is no end to the amount of gold and platinum in elanthia but every character has a limit to how much he or she can draw per hour or day etc.

Since we are talking about ways to make a game feel more like RL via being broke....
Introduce addictions to tobacco products, alchohol, gambling, and herbs (healing!).
Oh yeah, charge a fee to train at the guild... we could call it a tuition!
Please take away my ability to ride a horse untill ALL my fines are paid in full in ALL provinces and if found on said horse take it by force and store it in the stables for a maximum of 30 days at 5 plat a day. at 31 days it will be auctioned to someone for 1/3 the price I paid for it.
I should have to pay spousal support to any character I am no longer bonded too and if any child was ever concieved make it three times as much. Also, refer to above horse ban for any late payments.

Aside from the fact that some people have a lot of money and some don't, I'm not sure that I can see what's broken.
I do think that a lot of the "fixes" being proposed would end up being being of serious harm to those of us who do not devote themselves to squirelling away plats.
Surely there are more important things to focus on.

For the record, I DO understand the issue and I think it might have some legitimacy to it. I was being sarcastic, sorry you (failed) the perception check ;-)
I seem to remember a certain GM posting the problem a few posts ago... Too much money and no stuff to spend it on...
That sounds like the source of the problem right? No need to ask again. Thanks though.
The point of my posts was to illustrate how absured it sounds to punish characters for storing up money rather than rewarding them for it via ways to spend it.

Uh... who's been proposing ways to punish people with money?
Anyway, if people must suggest new things to spend money on I think its best if the new product/service is something that's only relevant at high circles/when you're wealthy. This way we're not further widening the "quality of life" between the 'rich and the poor'.
For a non-serious suggestion as an example, an exclusive area that requires recurring IG membership fee for armadillo hunting would not be relevant to Bob Newbie, but highly valued by those able to hunt them but with specific spawn rate preferences.

If I were looking at redoing item damage, I'd eliminate total item destruction, unless there was an expensive way to ensure items for replacement.
I'd make damage MUCH more common. I'd make some degree of damage repairable by characters, such as oiling a blade or sharpening it with a whetstone. Those kinds of activities are stuff that make for good busy work while RPing and listening to classes.
The way damage should work is that it happens nearly all the time, and very slowly degrades the effectiveness of the weapon or armor. So every few hunting trips you need to stop by the smith (or if you have the skill work on it yourself) and have the weapon or armor tuned up.
While stringing and unstringing bows would be annoying, part of bow wear would be needing to get the strings replaced, needing to get the riser replaced, etc.
This way someone can take the time and effort to keep their stuff in perfect condition or they can let it slide for a week or two and need it drop it off at the smith for repair.

Before my first post it was stated by Renee that we should charge a fee at the guild for training, may have been a joke though. Either way, see a few posts back it was mentioned a couple of times.
However, your right, inflating the prices of items is not a punishment, only a means to lower peoples bank accounts while leaving them with less to show for it. We could call it a provincial tax?

This is a bit of a strawman.
Fluff and festival goods and even the best forged/player-crafted stuff have not gone up in price. They have if anything become infinitely more accessible as all of the playerbase has access to easier methods of making money and in the case of player-made goods as the number of suppliers has increased.
The only thing that has appreciably gone up in price are the very rare auction-level items. But frankly, looking at a timespan of the past five years, even that stuff hasn't gone up very much at the auctions themselves.

Beyond anectdotal evidence, can anyone prove that prices for anything has gone up steeply?
I sat down and thought about it, and yes, general prices have gone up a staggering amount since I started 10+ years ago, but it seems like the ease of getting items has not actually increased by much.

Inflation and item rarity really should be separated to not cloud the means of addressing them.
Inflation is the problem where genuine newbies are having trouble due to ever increasing standards expected of them, such as having to have at least a 5 plat j-gweth or be cutoff from the world.
Whereas Rarity WITH skewed inflation/income/economics might be (and true story tho not real numbers) say I spotted soemthing I really want when I started this char, but it was worth 100 plats then and I had, say 3 gold. Now I have 1000 plats in my blank, the market price of the thing has gone up to 1000 plats, and I am extremely unmotivated to pour my account-wide life savings for a single item as that. Such items are not only rare, but will only be exchanged hands among those who've been around forever or actually willing to spend real life cash to purchase plats, or those who put through the effort of playing with the IG economy such that it would defeat my personal purpose of "playing a game".

I was illustrating how people are clouding up issues.
Just because proposition #1 does not solve issue B, does not mean prop 1 is worthless, because it still solves issue A. However, usually all symptons that can be seen possess both issues A and B.
As for the "personal problem", I highly doubt that the example I gave was an uncommon one. It isn't about the amount of work you put in. Just because some examples of success can be cited does not make it untrue, as they likely just simply knew how to game poorly designed system, which not a reflection of the system being without problems.

There may very well be a lack of high end items and services, but you have to admit that the statement above does indicate sort of a problem.
How many more people today would be able to buy boats at the original prices when you compare with the number of people who could afford them initially? Given time and desire, the accumulation of wealth of every player will increase. Not simply the amount of wealth, but the rate of accumulation. Whether it affects you or not, you have to see this is a problem.
To simply address "not enough high end items and services" then GMs would have to roll out increasingly expensive swag to drain plats in accordance with the increasing accumulation of wealth. This may not affect most of us, but it's a problem on their end.
I have no problem with having money and all of this is just academic for me. It doesn't affect me in the slightest, but there is still a problem.
Short of tying in the supply of money to an actual economy instead of just spawning it in the form of infinite creatures with infinite coins and valuable pelts/skins and infinite resources for shops to keep buying gems and skins; I suppose Simu could just go all medieval and have NPC tax collectors going around and shaking down the adventurers for "needs of the crown".
Either that or when boats are next released after the code changes, if they look at targeting a certain number of new boat sales, don't be surprised when the Cog lists for several factors more money than it did before.
You wave your hand through the mist of the fountain and rub the wetness between your fingertips.

What the game needs is some sort of permanent money sink that would provide something that the players desire and would willingly pay for, but is expendable rather than just another asset as are the various rare high ticket items out there which can be turned around for cash at will.
How much would players pay for a one shot item that essentially gives the player an RPA to spend?
Tools that allow characters to create events would be best. How much would players pay for 'invasion banners' that could be expended to create an invasion anywhere at any time?
How much would someone play to trigger a really bad storm that used the storm mechanics?
Would anyone pay to unleash a nasty plague?
What if there was a player run town, where all the major officials were players instead of GMPCs, and those positions were handed out every game year or so to the players who coughed up the largest bribes to those who selected the holders of those positions? How much money would be sunk into attempting to obtain one of those positions?
What if the leaders of said town could spend further monies to hire mercenaries to raid or attack target places throughout the realms (if ya gonna be mayor, ya should have some power)?
What if there were two such towns perpetually at war with each other?
Okay, so maybe some or most of this isn't feasible but that doesn't mean there couldn't be some big time money pits that would not only drain coin from the game but add random excitement to it as well. :-P
You suddenly feel nauseous, as if you'd been doing performance art.

>>You haven't found someone willing to sell for the price you've offered. Last was what, 500 plat? Increase your offer.
Yeah I guess 500 plat != the life of me heh. I am just surprised no one has stepped up with a price to buy theirs. But I think most likely no one needs coin that has one and/or every one that has one (at least on forums) uses it.
I will increase my offer...say 800 plat? :/

Here is my take on the inflation issue. Who cares? At this moment I have everything I need. I have my partisan, I have my steel capped femur club. I have my forged weapons and armor. I also have my catapult basket. All of these things just cost me a short time in Adan'f or Fens worth of effort.
My bank account has slowly but surely gotten bigger and bigger. I have given away tons of stuff because I am too lazy to sell. I never wanted to own a boat and I know at this moment I have nowhere near the money I need for a mirror blade or whatever. I am fine with that.
All I am saying is this. The things that you want you can usually get for a reasonable price or even free.
The rare things yea they cost an insane amount but those are usually those strange things like backpacks that hold 30+ boxes. These things are sold at rare festival auctions.
If we all could afford these rare things then they would not be rare. We would have nothing to strive for. We would all be equal. We would all have the exact same stuff except with different descriptions. How boring would that be?
We need these rare insanely expensive items that nobody except 1 or 2 people have. That is one of those things that makes this game different than pretty much every other game. You have the potential to become that 1 person that everyone loves/hates because you possess something they cannot have.

>If we all could afford these rare things then they would not be rare.
This does not reflect reality.
Rare things are rare because GMs control the supply.
When have you ever heard of a 'rare' item no one could afford? Someone buys them. All of them. Rarity in Dragonrealms has nothing to do with money - the only way rarity is created is by simply not selling the item.
And...
>Here is my take on the inflation issue. Who cares?
Apparently (at least one) Dev cares. At least, enough to say Dira cases shouldn't be worth more than 3 plat. Hence: this thread occurring.

GMs are people too and are welcome to their opinions, but that doesn't necessarily reflect an official stance or design paradigm unless outright stated as such.
Jaedren's old and comes from a time when snake charms really were 5 plat. Stop shaking your cane at the kids, old man, you're riling them up.

To me the inflation thing is an issue not because of the high cost of rare items ... the money supply doesn't effect the rarity of these items in the slightest ... but because it is a symptom of the lack of value of one of the game's basic rewards. Money needs more desirable uses, though I'm uncertain as to what those uses might be.

I will agree with this.
More stuff to do with our money that isn't buying fluff that will rot in a vault unless we resell it for ten times the price.. but I honestly don't know what.
