Thanks for all the information in your responses, the answers were pretty much what I expected, but were very informative. As a programmer myself, I understand many of the issues, but prefer to suffer these limitations than to revert to running Windows on the iMac. If the highlights within Avalon could be enhanced or customized, I can live with the other stuff. I'm transferring my script files today, but may install Lich in the near future, as it sounds like it will be helpful. On the other hand, if the browser interface could do logging and scripts, that would be an option too.

Anyway, I may post again in a few weeks, after I've grown more accustomed to things. Thanks again for the helpful and quick responses.
