Avalon limitations 12/12/2017 07:45 PM CST
I recently switched from Stormfront in a Windows environment to Avalon on an iMac, and am frustrated with a number of shortcomings, looking for suggestions. I don't use Lich (currently).
1) Non obvious room exits do not show, and are hard to find. The links in Stormfront and the browser interface are very helpful, these are missing in Avalon.
2) There is no window for active spells.
3) The icon symbols for wounds, health, Rt, etc. are very small and cannot be resized.
4) The color highlights is limited and there are less options than in Stormfront.
5) Logging and macro support is good, but there is no support for composing scripts, which must be imported from Wizard.

Despite these limitations, I am sticking with Avalon due to the logging and macro support, not available with the browser interface (I think?).

Would Lich help with these? If not, please consider these enhancements on the next version of Avalon, (or a plugin).

Thanks for the work you all do, and if possible, could room number ids become available for us non-Lich users? It would be useful.

Regards,

Bjornsong ... when this happened to me, I gave it a college try for 2 weeks...

And moved back to StormFront under Wine. With lich.

All that said, there is a lich script that will put [brackets] around anything that is normally an underlined link in SF. I use this ALL the time for Newsby, because I totes can't run two stormfronts.

But it's EVERYTHING. And [it] takes some getting used to.

[Sea Thrak Table - 3909]
view you practically feel the salt spray on your face. The chairs pulled up to the table have
been painted in stormy greys and blues. You also see the [Newsby disk].
Obvious exits: [out]
So imagine that with critters, a crowd, and other stuffs.
There's a How To Install Lich And Wine and Stormfront And Stuff on the wiki from @Doug:

He is the guru for this, and was ever so patiently helpful to me. He told me I wasn't gonna really like Avalon, but he stuck with me to get it all working. :)

Quick responses and a thought to share (followed by a note):

1) Non obvious room exits do not show, and are hard to find. The links in Stormfront and the browser interface are very helpful, these are missing in Avalon. <- Lich helps but does not recreate this functionality.
2) There is no window for active spells. <- Lich can recreate this functionality.
3) The icon symbols for wounds, health, Rt, etc. are very small and cannot be resized. <- I don't believe this is accurate, but will confirm late next week if someone doesn't beat me to the punch. In the meantime, Lich helps but does not recreate this functionality at this time specifically for Avalon. Doing so might not be too complicated for a ruby genius, though.
4) The color highlights is limited and there are less options than in Stormfront. <- Lich does not help Avalon's native color palette assignment / limitations.
5) Logging and macro support is good, but there is no support for composing scripts, which must be imported from Wizard. <- Lich crushes this, owns it, rules over it and puts it to bed to sleep peacefully, every day, all day.

Thought(s): Installing Lich is not a trivial task for the Mac user. But - it certainly can be done, and I'm around to help with it as needed. Lich masks a lot of these challenges for you by automating things you wouldn't think automated. For example, you can 'go2' a location and the script will navigate through many of those non-obvious exits for you. But enabling your personal exploration and learning doesn't happen. It just takes care of it for you. You could try a virtual OS path (but then you have to invest in the Microsoft OS to go with it).

Note: Ixix works wonders with the Avalon client, and has the 'hood up' from time to time. I'm not sure how comfortable Ixix might be in tailoring the client to be the Stormfront of Mac OS, hopefully we'll hear. I doubt it is trivial, though - and so Lich would be the bridge of choice for Mac OS.

Happy to answer any questions I'm able to - fire away with more!

If you decide to install lich to use with Avalon, or really, SF ... let me know, and I will make suggestions for scripts that are Avalon friendly. There's one that will give you active spells, for instance.

Pretty much all of those limitations are due to Avalon using the original Wizard stream instead of the StormFront XML stream, the XML being where all of that extra info is. Switching to the XML stream is a very significant task, particularly when it comes to functionality like the windows and clickable links and stuff. I just don't have any easy answers or fixes for those issues, as much as I'd like to myself as an Avalon user.
