Foraging 07/19/2003 08:30 PM CDT
Somebody told me about a technique for foraging that was something like

Forage and find something = juggle twice before foraging again.
Forage and don't find anything = juggle once before foraging again.

Has anyone else heard of this, and if so do I have it correct? I can only imagine that the juggling has to do with how long the timer is for finding, and failing to find something. If anyone knows what the timers are that would help too :)

Thanks!

Actually Soim posted something like that. and it was

Find something, juggle 10 times.
Don't find something, juggle once.

The timers on foraging are different for success & failure.

Mute point really with the expected foraging changes.

Re: Foraging 07/20/2003 04:45 PM CDT
The timer for failure is approx. 15 seconds. The timer for success is variable based on your skill and the difficulty of finding what you are foraging for including both base difficulty and rarity for that area. Which means it could be as low as 30 seconds (possibly even lower but by that point it's not really teaching anymore) or as long as 2.5 minutes (longest I have seen). Basically, the easier it is to find, the less time you spend looking for it (the RT is not representative of this) and the shorter the timer.

As Tabac mentioned, the timers will be moot (MOOT, not mute <flail>) with the foraging changes, there will instead be a limit on how many can be found per unit time based on skill. The better you are at foraging, the more places you can look to find them, so the more there are to be found.

One catch, however. The mechanics needed to finally get rid of the timers won't be available until DR2, according to Jent at the meeting. So even if we see the rewrite released before then (it's on the list for HSN, still, isn't it?) we will still have to put up with timers until DR2.

Although personally I am hoping Jent throws us a bone and at LEAST go ahead and ditch the failure timers for now. Even if it means doubling the success timers. If I need an herb and I need it now, it's annoying as hell that I face a choice: risk further damage by delaying forages or definitely losing the exp because of that dang timer. No hope for relief for multiple herbs until DR2, but at least one at a time it would be an improvement.

I stand corrected and rightly so, I seem to have Mute on the brain for some reason, he would have loved signing all the same <g>.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has pinpointed how the foraging timers work? Is it an individual foragable item timer coupled with a room timer? Could you forage for, say, 12 different items, then move rooms, or wait for the room timer to wind down, or would only one item per room timer work? (all asuming there is a room timer..) -confused.

Thanks,
Muhadeen Al-Din-Siraj.

Recently a ranger who had died on Aesry was able to move foraging rather well by foraging one corn, climbing the stairs, then foragine again and so on until he got to the city.

My guess is...no. =) Lots of specualtions, and theories, and people who are sure they know what it is.

But with new foraging on its way (and supposedly a much easier time of learning it) I wouldn't worry too much about trying to pin down what will soon be the 'old timers'.

I don't know about it being much easier...Jent said something about 20 minutes to lock it at 300 ranks, still too slow for me to work it. But better, yes.

>>Teeklin>>I don't know about it being much easier...Jent said something about 20 minutes to lock it at 300 ranks

No, he said he was able to lock it under 20 minutes at various ranks ranging from as little as 50 to well over 300. So that's one bit of good news, the exp will finally range with the items like it really doesn't do now.

>>Teeklin>>still too slow for me to work it. But better, yes.

It wasn't meant to be a skill that got "worked". But it will finally be a skill that teaches as it should for when we actually need and use it. Timers were meant to keep people from working the skill too hard, I just wish that long ago they tripled the timers and then hit the exp by a factor of 10 or more, would have been a lot more useful and worthwhile.

The new system will teach well for those who use it as intended ... forage for what you need when you need it, and learn decently from using the skill instead of "working" it. About dang time, too.

Training Foraging.. 08/31/2003 04:58 PM CDT
Isoe and I did a few experiments on training foraging last night and found a few interesting things.

1) There doesn't appear to be a timer on foraging any more (at least not as of last night). I got my best results by repeating the forage as soon as the RT timer came off.

2) It appears you don't learn much (if anything) from failed attempts to forage.

3) Different items teach at different rates. Presumably the harder an item is to find, the better it teaches.

4) Foraging precise seems to teach better than foraging normal even though with the 20 sec RT you forage less often. I haven't checked to see if collecting teaches even better yet but perhaps it does since it has a 30 sec. RT

4) So the best bet is to forage precise (or collect?) the hardest item you can find consistently and just forage it over and over again.

At 205 ranks of foraging it took me about 15 minutes to mindlock foraging by foraging precisely for birch sticks.

What would be good is to try to get an idea of the level of difficulty of each item in the list (see my previous post)

I think it would be a great help to many people if we start to compile a list of what items people can find at different levels of foraging. Also, it would help if you say where you found the item, what time you found the item, and even what moon is out. If you feel like hleping, AIM me at LaChupaPengue.

It seems like it's easy to lock foraging IF you can find sticks and limbs of specific woods, but difficult if you can't.

Keep playing with it. You'll find something that's right for you. If your around 150 in foraging, try foraging Careful Strawberry. That's what does it for me... lock under 10 minutes.

I agree with Treshan- try careful.. also change your pause 21's to:
pause 2
pause

Just plain 'pause' will wait till the timer is expired, but its buggy and sometimes thinks its expired right away, so you put the 'pause 2' in to make it wait long enough to be effective.

You might have to narrow down to the items in your list that are hardest to forage to get the most bang for you buck.

Im not convinced that Careful works better than Precise...there is still a timer by which experience gain is limited. If you successfully find something, you wont gain another mindstate for the next 2-3 forages, whether successfull or not. Im using precise, which holds twice the RT. Seems like the timer resets after about a minute each time you find something. Forage the most difficult material you can manage, use WS if you have to. Forage one item every 45-60 seconds. Youll get two or three mindstates per pulse. Train other stuff in between.

Easy enough to find out definitively whether foraging carefully (or any of the varieties) has a timer at all, just takes a favor orb. I'll try it in a couple minutes and let you know. ;-)

Or perhaps Jent tweaked FORAGE to always toss a handful of bits into your pool (like typing PARRY) which would throw my test method off. <mutter> Wouldn't put it past him ...

Did a little further testing...careful seems to work a bit faster indeed. Also tried foraging (regular) between carefuls to try and 'trick' the system, but it seems that the counter can tell the difference. ::Shrugs::

NOTE: also discovered that beseech the wind to clean lasts quite a while if you forage careful and drop the item after the RT is up.

Now, im being bad here, but it doesn't get any better after i get the rest of my spirit back.(bad in the way that i can't find it in the script and its 12:30, bed time) I went swimming and after i locked that up my foraging abilities returned to normal. From what people tell me, my ranks are border line for finding these types of Limbs.

Any thoughts?

Time of day or weather change during the beseech? Happen once, or all the time?

Chances are the sun set, or a moon moved, or a cloud cover came in. If you weren't kneeling, try doing so when that happens, it may be enough to off-set the penalty. That or a cheap 5 mana WS.

Perhaps your beseech is reducing something that gives you a bonus to forage. Is there some sort of attunement to nature that gets used up when you use a beseech?

You lose a very small portion of spirit health. So small it completely regens on the first pulse. I suppose you could also take a small hit to your bonus as well. That could explain failures in foraging, if you were foraging something right at the cap for your skill level.

You COULD put logic in losing bonus when beseeching, but you could put much much MORE logic in NOT losing bonus when beseeching, and perhaps even in GAINING bonus when beseeching, so hopefully no bonus is lost when calling the wind.

No, but charisma is.

Does Charisma effect foraging? So of those limbs i cant find for about 15 minutes after the beseech. Im pretty close to having enough TDPs to raise my Charisma, which is really low. I'll stop foraging till right before i raise, then let you guys know what i find out.

from a logical perspective the wind blowing around with cover traces of items plants you might be looking for as well as well sucking up anything not bolted down. Have to play around with it as all my foraging since I came back I've used compost.
