>Does Charisma effect foraging?

>Ack! no, it was a joke. Breaking wind = .. farting *blush

However, that is an interesting probability...hmm.

Charisma has a small affect on almost everything, even more so now then it did a year or so ago. I would not put it past the GMs to put that in the equation for a successful forage, especially if you forage for things just on the tip top edge of your abilities..

This might explain why people who can forage something, while their friend right next to them, with the same forage and perception, can not find it at all.

I got tired of waiting forever for my spirit health to regen after aligning and beseeching. Normally took 20+ minutes to an hour to gain my spirit back after a healthy beseech. So, I raised my charisma up by 3 points, now it's back in no time. Even after I die, I regain my spirit health sooo much faster.

Just a pondering thought from me, about charisma and foraging, off to work.

Be well

I remember when I was young folks told me that your 'luck' depended on your charisma. When pressed they never could tell me exactly what 'luck' affected and in time I figured it was one of those urban legend things.

I remember either Paklin or Jent saying in one of their posts that some of the old rumors about foraging just might be real now (like kneel and removing armor improving your success). There's also a message you get when you're not successful something like "You're convinced you could have found it with a bit more luck."

So I wouldn't put it past them to make charisma affect foraging success. Its one of those stats they've been trying to 'find a home for'. I'd think agility would more likely to be a factor though.

Training charisma isn't a bad idea for other reasons, but I'd hate to see someone invest in it to test a theory about foraging unless they have a bunch of TDP's to use up. (Glances at Krin)

I was going to use them on Charisma anyway. I dont have enough for my wolf yet.

Don't look at me, I already burned up 400 of my TDP's raising agility to get min RT on my 2HE. Dropped below 1000 (which I wasn't going to do, but this was worth it) and I need to get them back up again.

Before careers and racial feats, I want 2000 TDP's on standby so I am ready to go. :-D

You're 35+ circles and don't have 16 charisma? Wow....

Such a feat would require much dedication, but the rewards could be astounding.

>>Xelten>>Such a feat would require much dedication, but the rewards could be astounding.

And I was closer than you might think. I made it to just short of 1500 when I trained up strength 4 points and dropped back to almost 1000. Let them accumulate a bit, trained one more strength to get to 40, dropped TDP's back to 1000 again. Estimated that depending on weapon attributes I would need 4 or 5 points of agility, used CS to confirm it would be 4 ... then bit the bullet and spent the TDP's to get them, dropped myself back to about 580.

Back up to about 620 now, and still climbing. I figure I should be able to make 70th before racial feats and careers no problem. I only need 129 ranks of survival and 51 ranks of longbow to get it. Taking into consideration that I usually gain at least half as many TDP's (usually more) from ranking skills as I do from circles while getting those circles, that means I still have 2700-3000 (if not more) TDP's ready to be reaped. I can still spend a total of 1500 or so and still meet my goal in time.

So it's more a matter of self control and not spend them than it is of getting them in the first place. :-D

How to learn with Foraging 2.0 11/02/2003 11:06 PM CST
Been seein' a lot o' posts here and in other areas about people not bein' able ta learn under the new system. Well I'm here to try ta help ye. So kick back and let me tell ya what I've found that should work for ye....

** WARNING **
This involves a bit of actual work on your part!

STEP 1A
Get the list posted by Jent that has all the items listed in difficulty order. It's in several folders and
on several web sites. Keeping all the items in THAT ORDER, number them from 1 to 118. Keep this list handy,
you'll need it later.

STEP 1B
Make sure that you are fully heal, take off your gloves and mask, and ensure it's daytime before you
continue.

STEP 2
Find a good foraging spot. I define this as someplace safe, has good mana, lots of forageables, and is
Ranger friendly (check with pace). Now, you might ask "How do I know if this spot has a lot of
forageables?" Easy, you look (Doh!) Get that list out and go through each item without using any special
verbs (careful, precise, and collect will come later). Make a mark by each item that you can find THREE
TIMES in a row.

STEP 3
Now that you have a list of what YOU can find in this spot, we'll find out what you should collect here.
Take your foraging skill and get half of it. I'll use 110 ranks for my examples from here on. Half of 110
is 55 (round any fractions down), now find item 55 on the list (nemoih root, if this was not an item that
you found go to the next higher number that you did find). See if you can successfully collect this item
THREE times in a row. If you can then go to the next higher numbered item that you found and try again. If
you can't then drop down to the next item that you found and try that. What you want to do here is find the
most difficult item that you can successfully collect that is NOT a stick or a limb. Once you find this,
write it down.

STEP 4
Take your foraging ranks and find 3/4 of that number (and round down). For 110 ranks that would be 82.
Starting at 82 on the list and going down (ie. 82, 81, 80, etc) find the first STICK that you have found
in that location (in this example it would be fir stick at number 69). See if you can forage careful this
item THREE times in a row. Again, move up the list if you succeede and move down the list if you fail. Once
you find the hardest stick that you can successfully forage careful three times write down the *WOOD TYPE*.

STEP 5
Starting on the list at the same point in STEP 4, find the hardest item (that is not a stick, not a limb,
and not the same thing used in STEP 3) that you can forage careful THREE times in a row. Write this item
down.

STEP 6
Now you should have a list with 2 items on it and a wood type. The work part of this is done for now :)
Let's assume that your list has the following on it:

collect - yelith root
wood - fir
item - seolarn weed

Now you would forage in the following way:
1. forage careful fir limb
2. forage careful fir limb
3. forage careful fir stick
4. forage careful fir stick
5. forage careful seolarn weed
6. forage careful seolarn weed
7. collect yelith root
8. (optional but something that I do) prep and cast compost
9. goto step 1

IF you are in a decent location that has enough challenging items in it, then you should be able to
mindlock foraging (depending on wall rank position of course) in 5 or fewer times through the list (ie. 35
forages or less). Two good locations that I can recommend in the Riverhaven area:

- Mistwood Forest Road at the stile. Out Riverhaven's west gate.
- Riverhaven Road, Foothills at the footpath to the home site. Out Riverhaven's east gate.

Now go ye forth and get dirty!

Here endith the lesson.

Well... damn. I usually just forage something precisely until I'm locked... But, I suppose that works too.

I forage the hardest thing I can forage careful, over and over. Have to check this out.

Oh, and the forage for everything list: look back through the folders, several folks have posted a couple scripts to forage once for everything on the list and put it in your pack. The next script cleans that pack out. Actually, here I posted them again:

Now, you can compost or beseech wind to clean. Also, you could change it to drop in a waste container.

Been collecting quite a bit of foraging data and figured I'd share a bit of it.

Yes means that I found that item in that location.
xxx means that I did not find that item.
Diff is the item difficulty ranking.

This table is not complete. I only listed items that I found in 3 or all 4 locations.

- - Hidden Ranger NE Birch
Item Diff Clearing Guild (bin) Gate Copse
berries 01 Yes Yes xxx Yes
branch 03 Yes Yes Yes Yes
wood chip 05 Yes Yes Yes Yes

A few other things I found out that have held out so far but need more testing:

- if you cannot find grass in a location, don't expect to find much else there
- if you can find grass in a location then expect to be able to find at least 26 different items (with enough skill of course)
- the NTR from the turnoff to Dirge up to the Haven ferry is DEAD. Even the farmlands there are DEAD.
- Room descriptions LIE ... a lot.
- About 95% of the time, if I can't find something on the first forage then I won't find it.
- The best spot near Crossing I have found so far is the Hidden Clearing with 51 items.
- The best spot near Haven I have found so far is out the east gate at the footpath to the home site with 50 items.

All testing was done kneeling, no head/hand armor, no injuries, 127 perception, 112-113 foraging.

Thanks for the notes, Hymel.

Just a comment about the difficulty numbers, since no one else seems to have caught on.

Jent posted the difficulty list, but what he didn't say is that the items were clustered into groups of the same (or similar) difficulty level, and sorted alphabetically within those groups. So, everything in berries to twig should be in difficulty level 1, while acorn to stem is difficult level 2 and so on . . .

That doesn't mean that, for example the first item in difficulty level X+1 isn't alphabetically after the last item in difficulty level X.

I don't know if you're collecting info on this or not, but I thought I'd pass it on anyway. If you try to forage for ebony limbs when its pouring down rain, "It's raining steadily," at the NE gate, you won't find any.

Once it drops down to just, "It is drizzling" then you will be able to find stuff again.

Thanks Muely, but you're better off going 1 se of the NE Gate (Northeast Wilds, Birder Lane). At the NEG with clear WX and daylight I wasn't able to find ebony, but going 1 se I not only found ebony but also alder, ash, birch, elm, maple, and oak. I also found riolur leaf there.

I've gone through about 40 different areas/locations from the Stone Road, down to Crossing, several in/around Crossing, and up to the Brambles. Now I have a pile of notes to try to organize :) Once that's done I'll pass everything off to Olwydd/Quelgash for their database if they want it.

BTW, city type folk should check out either the Town Green Pond (and feed the gelapod) or Midton Circle (at the bucket). Both have a nice selection of items.

We'd certainly appreciate it. Feel free to mail it to either Quelgash or herbs@olwydd.org - It's a little mailing list I setup where we (Kythryn, Quelgash, me and others) talk about such things. What exciting lives we live.

Yeah, I didn't hear of anyone finding Jadice flower during the recent winter. Is the weather the same all over known Elanthia? Or are the islands a bit warmer? Seems like the weather on the mainland is all just about the same.

Ermm, my commoner with over 120 in dirt grubbin' was able to find Jadice around Haven in winter.

However, if memory serves correct, I avoided foraging in areas that had a drift of snow in them. May have something to do with -- and then again not.

Going to try this next winter if I can remember that far into the future...... senility is a wonderful thing :sighs:

Did a little bit of testing of exp per set period of time. Found these results interesting. Take from it what you will. Listed best method to lowest. Had WS active + whatever standing my bonus is in.

Foraging coin (regular) seems to teach best. 10 second careful that's too easy is too low. 13 second careful which is too tough doesn't work either. 10 second careful which is higher end challenging seems close, but still not as good as a 5 sec regular.
