So for bragging rights.... 03/13/2014 09:56 PM CDT
Looks like I'm the first. Only took 13 years. :-D

The guildleader (Kalika) says, "Not yet, not yet, things are not yet prepared for the challenge that you must pass in order to advance beyond this point. Come back another time."

Name: Seeker Falkonis Rahl of Elanthia Race: Elf Guild: Ranger
Gender: Male Age: 96 Circle: 200
You were born on the 13th day of the 9th month of Dolefaren the Brigantine (ship) in the year of the Silver Unicorn, 315 years after the victory of Lanival the Redeemer.

<<what now?

Honestly, I dunno. 200 was a big carrot that I was chipping at for a while. This last two weeks went by incredibly slow, as I felt myself getting close.

Perhaps when carving 3.0 is released, I'll work on becoming a top bow/arrow maker. Or maybe I'll work on getting my skills to 1750, or start back training low weapons, etc.

There are a few things I could focus on, but I dunno if they will be as big of a carrot.

On a side note: It doesnt look like the ranger guild leaders say anything special for 200, like they did for 150 (was a big let down, from an RP perspective), but I kinda had a feeling there wouldnt be. Also, there is no new title, if anyone was wondering.

Yeah... 200th circle isn't really developed so much as 'possible'. I can't speak for everyone, but I don't think we really expected anyone to be hitting it anytime soon realistically.

No worries. It doesnt look like I broke anything, lol. I've been told there are a couple people that are 'close', so soon maybe closer for others. Although, it's been a few years since post-150 was released, so it hasnt felt that quick for me. I was actually expecting others to hit it long before me, (especially since my play time has been on the low side for the past year.)

I was reminiscing earlier about when I rolled Falkonis up. I remember Galain was already sitting at 99th (and then months later his big party when he finally was able to go to 100). Rangers like Fengreve, Dritzfury, and Forgenash were at 90th+ and closing in on 99-100. There was a group of huge players like Lakus, Edgee, Tenion, and a handful of others close to 100th in their respective guilds. I remember thinking, wow, I'll never catch those guys. They are huge. I remember when 300 longbow was incredibly rare, and was all you needed to cap longbows. I was in such a hurry to get big to be able to run with the big boys. But really in DR, slow and steady wins the race.

I started playing in 2001, and can hardly believe I'm still playing 13 years later. The goals I've kept setting for myself has been what has kept me around. Maybe my achievement will be motivation for others to continue the trek that is the DR climb to the top. It's another reason I'd like to see game-wide skill registers. It would be another fun carrot for the end-game people to work toward and be competitive with each other.

TF has something like this and the renown scroll system I wrote certainly supports it. I'll bounce something through proposals and see where we end up.

Oh Falker, congrats! ::hugs and smooches him:: Man, you started DR and Falkonis 2 years after me and I'm not even close to 150th!

And yes, you should have a party! Why not come to Ranger Training Night next week and we will drink to your health and escort you to the old ranger's cabin.

Or you could just get annoyed and kill the rest of us!

I'm sorry you never got your falcon companion. I had been hoping and pulling for you.

I know the GMs say the game has to have an ending but it is so hard to let go of something you have worked/wasted years to grow. How about a new DR instance where only the folks 200th and over can roam. No wait, it would resemble plat. Well, if I were Solomon I would have GMs coding over 200th, 2000 skill stuff to keep the old ones around.

I hope you reroll and not abandon this game. We need folks to look up to.

Lol. I'm not rerolling. I didnt work to get here, just to re-roll. I dont have any expectations for them to open the game up past 1750/200, but it would be neat one day. I doubt I'll be leaving anytime soon. DR offers more than just circles. Still lots of skills I can work on, and titles to unlock.

I thought it would be cool to have an event like Galain did or get some neat gift from a guild leader, but GMs are busy, and it would be presumptuous of me to expect something like that. I enjoy knowing I had fun making my numbers get big and its very satisfying to be the first to hit the circle cap.

You mean like a dream sequence Zynaca?

Kalika smiles and shouts, "Congratulations! You've just reached 200th circle! Now you will join us in the annals of history! We can share all the secret lore and mysterious power that generations of rangers have contributed to! You aren't going to believe what you see..."

...blinking the sleep out of your eyes you can't believe how hard you slept. You shouldn't have had the last 4 dark ales and that greasy turkey leg so late last night. Your dreams were so vividly real! Mountains of carcasses, skinned and tanned. Uncountable piles of rocks, grass and oak sticks, sacrificed on the altar of foraging. You dreamed for what seemed like a lifetime of chasing your prey through dimly lit forests, tracking their spoor with assured care before making that unerring arrow shot to the heart. A blur of countless meals, shared over a fire in the deepest wilderness, a fuzzy raccoon your only boon companion.

After a quick breakfast you make your way to the Ranger's guild for your first day. "Welcome to the guild, novice", says the foxy guildmistress Kalika. "I've got a job for you!" She points over to an open glen. "Forage up all that grass and braid it, we need a firebreak next to the guildhall. If you work hard for the next few days I might reward you with your first promotion."

You groan inwardly. Your warm bed and dreams filled of woodland glory are a distant and fading memory now. Time to get to work if you want to make 2nd circle by the end of the month!

>Well, if I were Solomon I would have GMs coding over 200th, 2000 skill stuff to keep the old ones around.

The 'end' of DR is 150th, by intention and design. They just opened it up to 200 so people could feel like they were continuing to progress.

DR also cannot, literally, support skills at 2000 ranks. The engine caps out at just shy of it, 1900 or something.

So no, if you were Solomon you wouldn't have your limited GMs wasting time on 'over 200 and 2000 stuff'.

Re: So for bragging rights.... 03/15/2014 08:02 AM CDT
Technically the engine caps out at 2,147 which is where that "2000" number comes from before you get nasty things like roll over (TFers who've had roll over problems will tell you - it isn't fun). The problem is that that includes buffs and pre3.0 combat could do crazy large multipliers (+90%? SURE!) so roll over starts to be a problem far lower then that.

The reduction to the current 1750 cap comes straight the above. 12750 +20% buff = 2100.

I still think as Solomon I would get GMs to open the game to be open ended. I don't know how but I would. And that's why I'm not Solomon. But I just feel there has to be a way of rewarding folks for all the work they have put in and to allow for them to progress. Maybe I have too much faith in GMs and computers.

Big kudos to you though, Falk. Wanna stop by the ranger guild for teaching night and let us bask in your glory? ; D

DR is already an open ended game. Open ended gaming means there's no true conclusion, and progression pretty much happens for the sake of progression and there's no specific path to take.

Except the game does end. 200 circles, 1999 ranks in skills (I think). I'm glad Falk wants to hang around but at 200 circles he has "won" unless you want to count getting every skill to 1999 or 2000 ranks. That would be an interesting goal. But if he does that then he also has "won", as the game stands now.

My hope would be to somehow code so there is no end guild or end rank. I think the powers that be once said such things weren't possible as their computers weren't powerful enough or something like that, but just as 10 years ago, 1 gig was like huge government type computer space and now 10 gigs is nothing, so I have hopes.

This really depends on your perspective and why you are playing the game. If you are playing to see numbers increase, then yes there is an upper limit to stats/skills, after that point you really dont have any more reason to keep going. However if you playing for any other reason, it really is open ended. Either way, you will never see a "The End" screen.

Oh, it could be done. We'd have to double the amount of resources used to track every skill for every player so that it was split across two 32 bit values instead of just one, but it could be done.

The larger point is "why"? The vast majority of skills are nowhere near properly developed from 1 to 1750 - most of them don't even really make it to 1000. We're just now starting to get creatures in that range after how many years?

1750 is a crazy high number to get a skill too. Keep in mind that when the game came out 100 ranks of skill and 30th circle was effectively the end game - which is what plagued system design for ages (We finally got most of that stamped out with 3.0 but you still find some crazy scaling issues here and there). The only reason the cap was raised from 150 to 200th was because there wasn't much harm in doing so and it was done with the caveat that development at those levels would be uneven and sporadic and it's basically NG+ content. That's why TDP costs post 100 in stats go insane. That's why spell slots drop to almost nothing (And initially were going to drop to nothing).

But see, Raesh that's exactly why I am posting. I think more should be done so folks at the high end could have more growth and fun doing stuff instead of lounging in armadilloes ad nauseum. Maybe as more was done at this end, more folks would want to aim for 150th/200th circle and Simu could keep players around.

Falker is unusual in that he wants to stick around but I have heard of folks just leaving and not re-rolling as Simu so much wants them to. Also I figure there are folks who make 150th/200th and then re-roll but man for me---I put my heart and soul into Zinaca and raised her from a baby ranger to totally inept but hopefully likable ranger she is today. I doubt I will make 150th or 200th in my lifetime because I don't play all the time but if/when I do, I won't want to quit. It would be neat to have more things to do at that level. Now I know this isn't happening but I can always hope.

Also, you can blame SimCity 2000 and Civilization 2 for opening the new world of open-ended play to me.

I think part of Raesh's point was there is limited dev space that already finds it difficult to fill in the current skill range. Increasing the skill range would greatly magnify that problem. Its one of the thing you have to accept in DR, there is a volunteer staffed Dev team that is already understaffed for the amount of development planned/needed.

Correct. If development time was an infinite resource there are tons of things we'd do that we just can't actually do.

There are times when I profoundly wish I had majored in computers. But I'm math challenged and besides, when I was in college, the computer majors had to carry around these long boxes full of computer cards all punched and god forbid if they got out of order!

But I would surely volunteer if I could code. Well, if I could still play the game and didn't have to give my life to Simu. I wish you GMs didn't have to work so hard so you could play this wonderful game and have a life. But big kudos to you who do and for all the work.

I've been told by someone who was trying to tempt me, you don't actually need to code to be a GM. If you think you have something to offer, I'd say go for it.

If I didn't love playing too much, I'd probably give it a shot.
