It is their choice to tip or not and it is your choice to heal or not.
Best suggestion is to set up colors. Interact with everyone and see where they fall, then ignore certain colors and rush to others.
Definitely would save a lot of aggrevation about this person doesn't tip or only tips two topazes.

Bleh, hit post too quickly.
I would enjoy meeting the person who doesn't tip because I have now reduced the number of people I would waste my time on. No one is her to fulfill the whims of anyone else. Someone rubs you the wrong way, don't interact with them anymore.

You just have to find the same 3 or 4 empaths a couple times in a row. Pretty much if someone tips 5 gold or more two healings in a row, and they're not incredibly beat up, they go on my "Good Tipper" list, and I'll heal them even if theres a line of 5 waiting before them.

And they need to interact with my empath, too. PC empaths are PCs first, empaths second. If you don't say a word to my empath other than, "Help! Need healing fast!" and then "Thank you!" and then you tip and leave, you're pretty much forgettable, no matter how much you gave me. (Unless you tip me 10 plat. That sears your name into my brain forever and ever. No highlights needed.)When my empath heals, it's not because she expects to make money, although she'd like to earn enough to have a little expendable income. It's because she enjoys healing and generally being sociable. Empaths aren't just more developed versions of Martyr and her fellow auto-empaths, we do talk and have actual characters that at least some of us try to RP. There are people she'll walk across Elanthia to help, and some of them tip like misers but treat my empath like a person, rather than a game mechanic. (Generally, though, people who treat my character with respect also tend to tip at least fairly well, some tip extremely well.)
Incidentally, I realize if you stumble into the guild with 98% vitality loss, there's not much time to chat up an empath. In those cases, "Help! Please!" is certainly not rude...it's an indication of a dire emergency. But have the courtesy to spend time with the person who just saved your life afterwards. After all, the character just underwent horrible pain and suffering just to make sure you didn't end up in the cleric's guild as a result of your actions. Vague recognition of that fact, asking if he or she needs any herbs, even if you don't have any, a bad joke, a good joke...etc. It's not as though you need to hold a long engaging dialogue. If you don't speak to my character, she doesn't hold against you, it just doesn't make her more inclined to help you in the future. A great way to annoy me, however, is to ask for healing, get completely healed, sit there for five minutes, then all of a sudden, "Heh, sorry, was in my head. Now, who healed me?"
All empaths are different, some might want that tip more than conversation but -- call me crazy -- I've always had a soft spot for people who treat my empath as a fellow character, not a healbot. Otherwise, as was stated, consistency with tips and being a repeat customer help, too.

You all should handle this like we handle it in TF. Play Roshambo. If you win, you get a tip, if the patient wins, no tip is necessary, or if it's a tie, it's up to the patient.

Anyways, when I'm playing my ranger, I tip:
1) 1 silver per circle=1.3 gold right now.
2) 6-13 boxes, still goblins right now though. Trollkins later this week though, if the empath wants them.
3) Full bundle of goblin skins, unscraped.
I don't tip in gems, yet, just don't see enough of them yet. And I don't care about how much healing was done. (But usually only go at the point that the wounds are piling up.)
(Un)Fortunately, he's not my main character.
On the flip side, as a 30th circle empath, I'll pretty much take whatever I'm offered. I used to decline after 2 gems, but not any more, got to save up for Festival shopping galore madness. But I still ask to make sure they didn't add an extra zero if it's more than a few gold. But lately I ask for a backpack of wood troll boxes, from those who shouldn't have difficulty with them...and never see them again. It's happened about 5 times in the last couple of weeks. My disarming and picking skills are whining.
If you tip well enough to be noticeable, you get moved to the good tipper list. Keep at it, and be fairly courteous, and go to the friends list, and I don't take a tip again from you. Boxes excepted. And if anyone on those lists ask for healing, they get it as promptly as I get out of RT.

that's great to have a nice little formula, and it works really well at low levels I might add, but you'd have to be 100th circle to tip a plat, and at that point, a plat is chump change I'm sure, but to each his own. The rest of it looks great, although I'd decline the boxes

I was wondering why you were so friendly and why I always see you sitting in the empath guild! This totally explains it.
By the way, to keep on topic, thats a fairly good guide for all levels. I mean, we've almost all said that 1-2 gold is a "good" tip. At 30th circle, you'd already be tipping 3. I think thats a fair progression for tipping, of course tossing in a few extra gold when you get up there in levels is always a good thing too! :-)

Not that I saying they shouldn't tip well (always tip well when you can. It just makes everyone feel better. I usually tip over 75% of what I bring in, and I love just handing over my gem pouch. I also think Cel just likes to see an empath smile). But do you guys think that a 30th circle whatever will make that much coin in one hunting trip? Just curious because I'm probably making a third to half that as a 26th cleric, and I can't remember the last time I went trader hunting. Am I missing some super secret technique that gives you triple the treasure? heh

Hunting level 30 critters starts paying pretty well, but most guilds aren't hunting level 30 critters at 30th circle. Where do most 30th circle fighters go nowadays? The hot spot was crocs when I was that circle and they sure didn't pay very well with those heavy skins. Sand sprites and vines/creepers pay really well however pay pretty well. So I guess it depends on where that 30th circle player is hunting.
I pretty much expect combat guilds in the 50+ circle range to tip me a gold or more. I know at 50th circle, my war mage was bringing in 10 plat a day in Snoblins. Now that's a critter that pays very well, and results from a full weekend day of hunting. He wears HP and doesn't need healing much, but when he does get healed, he tipped 3 gold to 1 plat depending on the service.
Even if you cut that 10 plat by two thirds, and are learning multi in leather, a 50th circle character can afford to pony up a gold or two.
It sounds like you are going above and beyond NIKPACK, so I wouldn't sweat it.

Thanks Purehand. That's the benefits of training seven weapons and not going back until I locked them all. I did know about sprites but just hadn't found my way over to Ratha for various reasons. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something else. I guess the stated idea works better for players of characters around 30th who maybe have more coin in their vaults from another, higher circled character.

sprites are definately a hot spot for coin, even if you're a scavanger that loots out of abandoned rooms, snoblins make good coinage, as do young ogres (if you haul back the stuff they drop), that's not counting pelts or if you're an arranging ranger (x3 by the way)

Maybe we should have a special empath ability called "siphon coin"
basically when someone stiffs us on a tip, we can make a stealing check vs their perception to grab some coin before they leave. Maybe have some nice messaging like:
"Souv lifts a couple coins out of Purehand's pockets since he seemed to "forgot" to tip"

Heh just reading the boards and stumbled across this. I was the one that made the offer. Yes there were other gems coming, but even if there wasn't, should that matter?
You was being rude, and I kinda enjoyed the limited RP, was fun. But to bring it on here and go all out of character is a bit lame. I understand not taking small tips because they mean nothing to you, and alot to the person giving them, but at least try and make it sound a bit nicer if you aren't trying to be rude.
Empaths should have a sponge room where they can go beat things up with soft sticks for a while to release some pent up anger.

I didn't mind the IC bit really, its just the way it's made it onto the forums that suprises me. How hard would it be for empaths to be given some kind of soft weapons? That could be a laugh, maybe add a new skill, toy fighting. To keep it roughly on topic, you could gamble on who can rub the other persons back the most with the sponge :D

I'm mostly done with mine, but I use ZMud. Currently, it has:
1)patient indicator (which lets you touch the patient)
2)a waiting list (which also automatically cycles the next person waiting into your patient indicator)
3)green (take)/red (don't take) toggles for the 4 wound/scar types (EW, IW, ES, IS). Currently a universal feature, with plans to make it more local to each body location
4)Quick/Careful mode indicator
5)part/half/most/all indicator
6)all wounds/just vitals/just limbs and eyes options (not working yet)
7)individual body location transfers based on the settings from #3
8)vitality/poison/disease transfers
It hasn't seen much testing time, however, so I'm not releasing it. It also doesn't do any of the anti-overheal checking as I was planning to put that into the self-healing/health system.

I'm all for a sponge room with fake weapons to take out aggression on, maybe they could even teach us a limited amount of weapon skill so that our parry isn't mostly worthless

That sponge room idea...however sarcastic it was...is really kind of cool.

I tend to gauge tip value based on wound quantity, as assessed by one of the more expensive autohealers (like Dokt) and then add a bit on the top. Of course, our dynamic is somewhat different in plat, so a player healer is not always available, and a lot of times we have to use the autohealers.
Anyway, specifying a set tip amount doesn't take into account the work the empath has to do OR the value to the player. A couple diopsides, especially if sold through a trader, more than covers the cost of a handful of scuffs at Dokt. Alternatively, you can easily drop 6-10 silver trying to get healed from a severe beating at Dokt, and so in that case I'm much more apt to tip a clarified ruby or a similar gem with a value well over a gold (and probably over 2).
Poison, infection, and near death experiences, or exceptionally fast or friendly service (like Sete.. when the heck did you turn into an instant healing monstrosity!?) warrant extra tip, if I have it (being that I hunt for money about once a month.)
From the perspective of my empath, his personality is such that he will accept whatever is given. If someone tips him 7 gems, he's perfectly content to keep accepting them endlessly :P He is still low enough to require patients to learn, so maybe his attitude will change when he can learn empathy without having to take wounds.

I tend to agree with your tipping method, I accept what I am given. I expect to be tipped something, and when I get tipped a small amount from someone who looks wealthy, I might think "Bahh, he could have tipped more." But thats as far as it goes, just a thought.
I require payment when I go out of my way to do healing, as I did with my housecall business. Sometimes folks are willing to pay for an empath so they dont have to leave the hunting area. 5 gold or a plat isnt too shabby for someone up in genis who just doesnt feel like walking down to the Crossing. In this instance I dont mind charging, since I am providing a service. If they come to me, no charge, if I an empath is requested for someone dead in the field, no charge. Only in response to my advertisement over the gweth do I actually charge.

I don't accept tips from novices, when someone who can obviously tip well doesn't I shrug the first time, second time the same person does it i get a little mad and might mutter something about keeping your friendly neighborhood empath happy and tip once in awhile, third time he goes on my black list. Which is fairly small because from time to time I'll allow people to redeem themselves, I'm not completely heartless. Point is many take empaths for granted, and they always will. We can do nothing to prevent or really change that attitude because we aren't all of a set mind when it comes to tips. When I heal someone who is about to die and save their life in under a minute though, meaning they have been COMPLETELY healed....I expect a more than decent tip unless, as I said, it's a young 'un. ::shrugs:: is merely the life of an empath...I'm just biding my time quietly until I have Nissa's Binding and can cast it efficently...then all those who don't tip or say thank you BEWARE!! I will go on the warpath and become a completely evil empath! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

I make about 1/20th healing compared to what my mage or thief make a month from hunting or pilfering.
Then again I made 100 plat on saturday doing shifts. But that client insisted on inflating my rates. I heart that client.
All in all I'd say my characters draw even on my good shifting months and Purehand falls way behind when the shifting clients prove to be elusive.

Oh boy, this topic again.
I've decided that I'm paying Empaths based on my time now since that makes the most sense for my moonie.
And at least then you know what you're getting right up front. First offer is 5 gold...if I have to ask again it's 4 gold...and it keeps going down from there.
Motivation! ;)
