Never has been my experience:
You ask Etaenia to appraise a faceted diamond. |
The jeweler Etaenia takes the faceted diamond and inspects it carefully before saying, "I'll give you 7068 for it if you want to sell."
>push lea
You press a faceted diamond into the chest piece of the leathers. As you do so the diamond glows brightly then returns to normal.
>aim r leg
You're now aiming at the right leg of your target when using a ranged weapon, or while ambushing.
>hurl he-who-must-not-be-named
With a quick flick of your wrist, you deftly send a leather throwing net into flight.
You throw a leather throwing net at he-who-must-not-be-named!
AS: +468 vs DS: +75 with AvD: +22 + d100 roll: +10 = +425
... and hit for 22 points of damage!
Sprained ankle! he-who-must-not-be-named won't be running soon.
He is stunned!
A faceted diamond's set into some gem-encrusted double leathers chest piece glows brightly then suddenly shatters!
The throwing net is deflected to one side, sailing to the ground.
Roundtime: 4 sec.
I have admittedly not tested a ton.

It seems to actually work as far as resistance goes since I do get the messaging that it has activated. The problem for me now is that shatter on 1 hit and what seems like a short amount of time per gem if it runs out on timer instead. The last 1 hit shatter was with an uncut diamond in DR Arena (think Friday or Saturday). After that I just used pearls for puncture resistance .. dang wall spikes! I didn't die to them after that, though. :)
I guess in answer to your question, it works most of the time.
I just wish there was:
1) Less gem upkeep needed.
2) A way to force swap gems even if it destroys the one mounted in the armor.
Oh and if anyone else was interested, HermieTheDentist on the PC did some testing with the gem armors. The gems needed for resistances are mostly different from what you would think based on the gem eating weapons. This is a list of 10, but there should be 5 more resistances (if the auctioneer was correct about 15 padding/resistances). I'm sure more gems work for particular resistances, too. If anyone else has more info to share that'd be great! :)
Diamonds - VHCP
Uncut Ruby - VHDP
Black opal - impact resistance
Blue Moonstone - vaccum resistance
Fire Pearl - puncture protection
a deep blue mermaid's tear sapphire - crush resistance
orange imperial topaz - fire resistance
emerald - slash resistance
rainbow quartz - lightning resistance
a chunk of pale blue ice stone - vacuum resistance

">Okay, I went ahead and fixed the issue where gems may have been shattering prematurely.
>So some information on these armors. There are three forms of decay on the gem you set inside it. It has charges and then 2 timers. The two timers SHOULD work together, but should they get out of sync, it will always default to real time. Gem value determines the number of hits you can take and how long the gem will last, so the armor has constant upkeep. The absolute cap is 150 charges (hits) or 15000 seconds. The gem expires on whichever comes first. Cheaper gems won't last very long. The timers don't start until you are successfully hit.
Hi there. I recently received some gem-eating leathers, and there does seem to be a bug that is causing the gems to shatter on the first hit. I tried some standard uncut diamonds and also an orbed blue diamond. I did a BUGITEM on them, but was told it might also be a good idea to post here. Anything else I should be doing or trying? Thanks!"
I am having the same issue as Maylan, and its with the leathers too. I also did a BUGITEM, and I posted about it in items and inventory.
