Beginner Experience and SHIP ROLE Bug 12/16/2020 03:49 PM CST
First, the easy part...

SHIP HELP ROLES references the command SHIP ROLE which needs to be changed to OSA ROLE.

Second, and the harder part...

I feel there needs to be a little tweaking done to the role selection NPC to better get a new OSA player going.

This situation pertains most specifically to the context of being taken on a sailing adventure with no understanding of the system, and no time to read the wiki or ask a bunch of questions of other players.

Specifically.. the NPC for picking a role should also explain those roles, AND have a strong emphasis on directing you to SHIP HELP BASICS or at least tell you the commands those roles primarily focus on (IE: assess/fix for a boatswain).

There was a post with this info that lays it out very well...

ROLES
Ship Specific Roles to provide you with more of an edge on the ocean.

Captain
-The jack of all trades.

Boatswain
-A highly repair-centric role.

Navigator
-Faster interaction with all navigation related objects on the ship.

Swashbuckler
-Bonuses against ship-specific maneuvers while on board. The swashbuckler also has a slight bonus to cannon damage.

Cannoneer
-Bonuses to accuracy and damage against your enemies with cannons.

You could also add to it somewhere about "go see SHIP HELP BASICS for more info on the commands/tasks these roles do."

I also think it would be important to highlight that you can do any task, even one that isn't suited to your role, and gain role experience for the role you're in. Basically, a way to indicate "pick a role, it really doesn't matter what you pick, but here's an idea of what they do so pick what sounds fun to you."

Ultimately, there's this emphasis on picking a role.. but there's not any indication/awareness of..

1) What do the roles do?

2) You aren't locked to the tasks of the role you pick.

Here's a suggestion from Darcena...

.

I would change this...

Ship Roles

Ship roles will provide you with bonuses as you level them up. You will need to declare your role before taking part in a journey. These bonuses can range from more damage when firing a cannon to faster interactions with navigation. To declare your role, you will need to visit the NPC in Kraken's Fall. He is located at the Town Hall, the Inking Den, in the Office of Employment. Each role has some specialties that pertain to its title. You can look at the SHIP ROLE command to see your current status.

..to say..

Ship Roles

If you would like to declare a role, you will need to do so before taking part in a journey. The optional ship roles provide you with bonuses as you level them up. These bonuses can range from more damage when firing a cannon to faster interactions with navigation. To declare your role, you will need to visit the NPC in Kraken's Fall. He is located at the Town Hall, the Inking Den, in the Office of Employment. Each role has some specialties that pertain to its title.

Captains eventually receive bonuses to navigation, cannon-fire, and repairing.

Boatswains eventually receive bonuses to repairs.

Navigators eventually have bonuses to navigation-related tasks.

Swashbucklers eventually have bonuses against ship-specific maneuvers and slight bonuses to cannon damage.

Cannoneers eventually have bonuses to accuracy and damage with cannon fire against enemy ships.

You can look at the OSA ROLE command to see your current status.
