Really well done. Thanks Xorus.

If I find errata should I post here, or send a PM? :)

Example: Charl's shrine was originally built as Shaal's shrine during the I.C.E. age and converted during the de-icing. You have it built during the intermediate period.

I remember that opening! I think that was when MTKs saw their debut, and then turned into a regular feature.
(Unless they already were a feature, and the Massive Troll Princes (higher [?!?] level) were used for the event.)

SPOILER ALERT::> Luxie prays, naming Reann in her heart. A girl can only RETCON so much, people! So Reann is the special, sacred name, which is never to be uttered aloud, just as her father and mother taught her.

However, she is pretty sure she is not the only Ronanite who knows his sacred name.

Lots of love for Xorus for this. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

P.S. Professor Xorus, The Shrine of Dreams is DEFFO from the Ice Age. I want to say it was one of the first. I don't think they changed much about it at all. Many of the visions I recognized. The rest were probably there and I forgot them...

I do not remember butterfly wings, however. Luxie treasures each one NONETHELESS. :)

Thanks, guys. It is a pretty massive undertaking and I have barely dented it. I do not have a lot of trust in the "intermediate" gods descriptions, in the sense I cannot be sure no tampering was done to the formatting by a player. One of the two documents I have looks like it might have stuff from two different time points mixed together. I want to disentangle when things changed, sometimes even subtle differences. The I.C.E. versions of the gods has also been changing and a lot of details are really dispersed.

<<Example: Charl's shrine was originally built as Shaal's shrine during the I.C.E. age and converted during the de-icing. You have it built during the intermediate period.>> - EREK

Oops. I actually caught that mistake and keep forgetting to fix it, I have a saved post somewhere where you mentioned building it as a Shaal shrine.

I guess here works for errata. The Shadow World end of it is easy, but I get shaky on some of the in-game stuff. Especially in the mid-90s.

<<P.S. Professor Xorus, The Shrine of Dreams is DEFFO from the Ice Age. I want to say it was one of the first. I don't think they changed much about it at all. Many of the visions I recognized. The rest were probably there and I forgot them...>> - Luxelle

I had not checked the saved maps I have yet, but I figured it was, I tacitly assume the places used in the Voln steps for the Landing were made before the De-ICE since Order of Vult was (seemingly) late 1994. (And the story that monk tells of their founding is absurd in that context. No idea what the intent was with it.)

Evialla's website Violetskyes had all of the god documentation from 1998. It might be a good cross reference for origination if you haven't found earlier. It's on the waybackmachine at this point since it was on geocities.

I do not suppose anyone has a nifty trick for getting at this documentation on the GemStone III website through the Wayback Machine?

It seems that the gods file (that is, in the 1990s) was one of the things hidden behind the members login screen.

I don't know that it will be there. The crawler wouldn't have been able to authenticate. So a user would have to have submitted the page while logged in. Not highly likely in those days.

I did a quick scan, and found nothing. ;/

I was able to find the original history document from before the creation myth and the Meachresim Illistim bit was added to it.

I was hoping the gods descriptions would also have been in the public area but no such luck it seems.

I'm thinking there was an older web site setup that may have defied easy usage/archiving. I sort of remember ...frames. Sort of.

Until GS3 became GS4, you could keep gaining levels as long as you could find ways to keep earning experience.

<<This is neat, thanks for posting that! As a quick reference, was there a maximum level in that system? I note that most have their avatars' levels listed, so I was curious how that compares to what an adventurer can theoretically achieve.>>

I should clarify that those are coming from the source books, so it is not the same thing as a player character in GemStone III which had years of level creep. The scale for adventurers in that setting was more like Dungeons & Dragons than GemStone IV with its Level 100 cap. Level 20 would be considered really high level for a player character. Things that we now consider low or mid-level would have originally been considered very high level. This roughly illustrates the NPC power scale as a frame of reference:

* An 8,000 year old Elven sorcerer might be ~ Level 30-40.
* An "Ordainer" demon, essentially a demi-god, might be ~ Level 40-60.
* The moon deity demi-gods are around Level 50-70.
* The "Great Drakes" are around Level 50-70.
* The dark gods are around Level 80-150.
* The light gods are around Level 140-210.
* The Lords of Essaence are around Level 70-130.

It is more complicated than straight level-versus-level. The artifacts, point multipliers, immunities. The deity avatars are weaker when they have to be projected from great distances. The Lords of Essaence were a super-advanced technological race, there was a broader sci-fi context which the fantasy world largely did not know. There will be some exceptions here and there, like the 4,000 year old half-elven monk who runs the Loremaster defenses is Level 60, there's a Dark Elven demon master that's Level 70.

To give an idea of the level creep, here are some points of reference. Loose rule of thumb seems to be "multiply everything by 5":

* A "typical gogor" is Level 8, "lead gogor" is Level 15. Our "minor gogor" => "lesser vruul" are Level 45, "greater vruul" is 75.
* A "Herald of Night" (like our "Scalian herald" => "Sheruvian harbinger") is Level 20. Ours are Level 63.
* A "night hound" is Level 5, ours is Level 24.

That's the exact sort of thing I was wondering about, thanks! Especially the aged sorcerer example gives a good idea of how that compares, though obviously there are lots of variables and it probably isn't nicely linear. I do like how the oldest source examples have such specifics, but the whole article is really nice for reference.

Strom had largely retired/gone over to DR to be a GM by then.
The street in his honor is actually named after one of his alts.

I remember Jadall, Angellisa, and <someone with an 'S'--> being up in the high 200s, but don't really recognize any of those names.

I'm not sure how long it took for an official file to appear after the move to the web, but the documentation before that appeared to be a player-driven project that happened 95-96. I'm not sure how much material was pulled in-game vs. from a sourcebook. I got several emails from Lady Laranna, who appeared to be the one compiling info from some of the other players (Thalior and Eillie, specifically, were given credit). There were one or two partial lists, followed by a "complete list" split into 2 parts that was just a couple sentences about each god. A little later, Laranna compiled it into a "thesis of the gods" which had more descriptive information.

Re: ICE Gods 05/28/2018 09:23 PM CDT
This was the earlier of the two lists:

= Pantheon of Liabo =

-Charl-
God of the sea, he is sometimes called "The Destroyer" because his anger is
like the worst sea storms. He doesn't care much for creatures on land.
(Shaal)

-Cholen-
God of festivals, and performing arts He's the opposite of his twin, cheerful
and mischevious. He too has seduced mortals, sometimes in the form of a
woman, just for fun. (Keiron)

-Eonak-
Smith of the gods, husband to Imaera. While strong, he is no match for Kai.
He is extremely skilled in his craft however, and has made all the weapons
used by the gods of Liabo. (Iorak)

-Imaera-
Gentle goddess of plants, animals and the earth. She wears robes of green and
brown, and adorns her hair with flowers and leaves - when she isn't in deer
form. She is honored at harvest festivals. Her husband is Eonak. (Iloura)

-Jastev-
God of visual arts and magic. With his twin Kieron, he rivals Kai's good
looks. He is very serious, sometimes sullen and morbid. (Jaysek)

-Jaston-
Follower of the Four winds, patron of the birds. (Jaynor)

-Kai-
Lord {{God?}} of strength and athletics, none can defeat him in unarmed
combat. Considered by many to be the most handsome of the gods, and has
fathered many mortal children.

-Koar-
King of the Gods, Ruler of Liabo. Almost never intervenes in the affairs of
mortals, but keeps the other gods, of Liabo at least, more or less in line.
He never interferes with Lorminstra, however. (Kuor)

-Kuon-
Patron of herbs and flowers, a gentle giant unless you anger him. (Quen)

-Leya-
Daughter of Kai, master of martial arts, patron of Amazons. (Laia)

-Lorminstra-
Goddess of Death and Rebirth. She holds the crystal keys to the Gates of
Oblivion. She is the one who determines whether a soul should be restored to
its mortal body or dwell in the afterlife (unless the soul has been claimed
by evil and is out of her reach). (Eissa)

-Lumnis-
Goddess of learning and wisdom, patron to scholars. Pale, but beautiful. Wife
of Koar. (Valris)

-Niima-
Mistress of the water, patroness of sailors, daughter of Charl. She acts as
Charl's conscience and moderates his temper. She rescues shipwrecked
sailors, but tends to save the young and handsome ones first.

-Oleani-
Goddess of love and fertility, and things feminine. Wife of Phoen, and the
most beautiful of all the goddesses. Wears white and gold. (Oriana)

-Phoen -
God of the sun and fatherhood, and things masculine. Husband of Oleani,
though their marriage is a bit - looser than traditional. Wears gold and
white. (Phaon)

-Ronan-
God of the Night, master of dreams and visions. He is always fighting
against evil, especially the god Sheru; though he cannot be corrupted, he is
weary. He always wears black, though his symbol seems to be a white horse.
(Reann)

-Tilamaire-
Patron of music and dance. Servant of Cholen, patron of music and dance,
enemy of Ivas. (Talaraine)

-Tonis-
Messanger of the gods. Rarely encountered by mortals. (Teris)

The Liberator, wanders Elanthia slaying undead creatures and breaking the
curse that keeps them from Lorminstra. (Vult)

= Pantheon of Lornon =

-Aldemur-
(Askylor)

-Amasalen-
Servant of Luukos, he oversees ritual sacrifices and craves human blood.
(Akalatan)

-Andelas-
Lord of Cats, brillant green eyes with slit pupils, muscular and lithe, with
shoulder length black hair. His attitude can be playfull, sadistic, or
simply
indifferent. He greatly enjoys toying with his prey. Upon spotting a huge
black panther, eight feet 'high at the shoulder, you will know that you
have been blessed with seening Andelas in his alternate form. (Andaras)

-Arachne-
The Betrayer, about whom you should really ask Lord Bleeds. Goddess of
spiders, she is an enemy of the Huntress. (Hrassk)

-Carelin-
(Karamon)

-Drevthrel-
(Trandel)

-Eorgina-
Goddess of darkness, grey flaming steel skin, glowing red eyes, long black
silky hair, truely a visage. She seems to prefer female followers, males
tend not to last very long in her service. She is unspeakably cruel and
delights in the pain of others, males especially. She bides her time for the
eventual campaign to rule Elanthia. (Origiana)

-Fash'lo'nae-
He is the master of signs and symbols, of all knowledge arcane. Short black
hair, with a steel grey streak, cool and calculating. Magic of all things is
his realm, many belive he is the true path to all sorcerous power.
(Kesh'ta'kai)

-Folthre-
(Faeldin)

-Gosaena-
Perhaps a powerful and evil local goddess, she had quite a following in
ancient times. You will learn more about her if you read about Bandur
Etrevion. (Kadaena)

-The Huntress.-
Goddess of Vengeance, about whom you should really ask Lord High Priest
Bleeds. Her symbols are the black widow (and other spiders) and the
eight-pointed star.

-Ivas-
The Dancer, beautiful four-armed woman with blond hair, and is very
voluptuous and seductive. Said to be the goddess of lust and jealousy. Her
cults are quite devoted to well...the more pleasureable pursuits in life.
Has the power to enslave mortals utterly. She generally perfers those than
can not control thier lusts, inline with Mularos. (Inis)

-Luukos-
God of Death, the Soul-taker, enemy of Lorminstra. One gets the feeling that
the Gates of Oblivion are Lorminstra's way to protect the souls of the dead
from Luukos, who would otherwise consume and destroy them. (Klysus)

-Marlu-
A hideous demonlike creature, he is the master of the vruul. He is not
really someone whose attention you want to have - you can't get on his good
side because he doesn't have one. (Morgu)

-Mularos-
God of Love and Pain, a very twisted sort. Like many of the gods of Liabo,
he will assume male or female form to seduce mortals. But his followers and
slaves do not last long, for they'll kill each other for the opportunity to
be with him. (Molaris)

-Onar-
The Assassin of Lornon. He is not malevolent nor does he seek power, but he
is a professional killer who eliminates those the gods of Lornon find
especially troublesome. Also a patron of assassins. (Omir)

-Sheru-
He is the bringer of night, and nightmares. With luminous yellow eyes, a
black furred hyena head, and a cruel attitude, his visage matches his
duties. Merely glancing at him in true form has left many mortals
babbling for the rest of thier short existance. He is frequently at odds
with Ronan, who also considers night his realm. (Scalu)

-Volnar-
(Valtar)

-V'tull-
God of warfare and domination. His weapon is simply named the Slayer. His
eyes are either black and impassive, or glowing red when he is in battle, his
skin marble white, rippling with muscles, his hair silver. He is the champion
of Lornon, the moon where the true ones dwell. His demeanor is determined,
attitude rightious, obsessive and vengfull. If you are marked by V'tull, you
can count your existance in only the time until he turns his attention to
you. (Z'Tarr)

-Zelia-
Called "Keeper of the Moon," she is a luna-tic. Stark raving bonkers, and
her followers all wind up that way too. She haunts Elanthia in a misty
chariot pulled by spectral grey stallions. (Zania)

Re: ICE Gods 05/28/2018 09:26 PM CDT
This is the "Thesis of the Gods" which was sent out later:

**Please note that this thesis is the expanded and re-worked addition to my last text.

= Pantheon of Liabo =

- Charl -
God of the sea, father to Niima, he is sometimes called "The Destroyer" because his anger is like the worst sea storms. He doesn't care much for creatures on land, and is rarely seen in his human form - preferring to take the form of a Merman, whale or great dolphin. In human form, he's a burly man with blue-white hair and beard, pale skin and blue eyes which refelect his moody demeanor. He weilds a great trident of greenish alloy set with emerald points. His shrine is located along the Coastal Cliffs. (Shaal)

- Cholen -
God of festivals, and performing arts, "The Bard". He has a beautiful singing voice and is said to play various musical instruments. He's the opposite of his twin, Jastev, God of visual arts and magic. Cheerful and mischevious, he's called upon to bless wine and aid with recovery from hangovers. He's been known to seduce mortals, sometimes in the form of a woman just for fun. He appears in mortal form as a tall, slight young man with blue eyes and flowing dark brown hair pulled back into a ponytail. Shrine - unknown. (Keiron)

- Eonak -
Smith of the gods, husband to Imaera. While strong, he is no match for Kai. He is extremely skilled in his craft however, and has made all the weapons used by the gods of Liabo. Being a master of his work, ever intent on producing the best quality possible, this has made him somewhat of a recluse, keeping to his smithy and avoiding social settings. Appearing thirty-something, burly, with black hair and deep brown eyes, he is an imposing sight which offsets his gentle nature. Shrine - unknown. (Iorak)

- Imaera -
Gentle goddess of plants, animals and the earth. She wears robes of green and brown, and adorns her auburn hair with flowers and leaves - when she isn't in deer form. Her eyes are wide and hazel colored, framed by soft features. She is honored at harvest festivals for her bountiful contributions of our land. Her husband is Eonak the Smith. Her shrine is located on an island in Silver Lake. (Iloura)

- Jastev -
God of visual arts and magic, twin to Cholen, God of festivals and performing. He rivals Kai's good looks with his own sensual hazel eyes, dark brown hair, fair skin and lean, handsome frame. He is very serious, sometimes sullen and morbid and wears black or dark grey garments. He is said to have originated many of Elanthia's alphabets and runes. Shrine - unknown. (Jaysek)

- Jaston -
Follower of the Four winds, patron of the birds. In mortal form he dons green breeches and many colored feathered bands about his head, arms and wrists. He is lighthearted and playful, appearing about to be in his late teens. With long brown hair, hazel eyes and slendor build, Jaston is handsome in a boyish way. Shrine - unknown. (Jaynor)

- Kai -
Lord of strength and athletics, none can defeat him in unarmed combat. Considered by many to be the most handsome of the gods, he's a known seducer and has fathered many mortal children. He appears to be a lean muscular young man with azure eyes and brown curly hair. He wears only a short blue tunic off one shoulder, his favorite weapon, a spear. His shrine is found outside of Wehnimer, near the velnalins. (Cay)

- Koar -
King of the Gods, Ruler of Liabo, husband to Lumnis, Goddess of wisdom and learning. Almost never intervenes in the affairs of mortals but keeps the other gods, of Liabo at least, more or less in line. He never interferes with Lorminstra, however. He appears as a muscular man of middle years, and has a thick mane of flowing snow-white hair. His eyes are greyish, skin ruddy, and is usually seen in a flowing toga-like garment. (Kuor)

- Kuon -
Patron of herbs and flowers. He has hazel eyes, light brown hair and appears to be twenty-something, a large hulking presence - his shimmering green, amber and brown robes unable to hide his massive shoulders. Flowers grow spontaneously in his wake and go uncrushed beneath his steps. He is gentle and kind, but has a bad temper once pushed far enough. Shrine - unknown. (Quen)

- Leya -
Daughter of Kai, master of martial arts, patron of Amazons. She is a superior warrior who appears to be twenty-something with azure eyes and wavy mahogony hair. She wears a belted tunic over her slender but athletic form and laced up sandals upon her feet. She has a cool, confident demeanor and is skilled in many weapons. Shrine - uknown. (Laia)

- Lorminstra -

superious powers, but he is reclusive and has no desire to dominate others. His followers are scholarly men and women, devoted to learning and copying ancient texts, and to mastering the arcane arts. He is much like the Liabo Goddess Lumnis, in his endless quest for knowledge, although he does hate the gods of Liabo for their attempts at controlling Elanthia. - Luukos -
God of Death, "The Soul-taker", enemy of Lorminstra. Very tall, muscular, with almost metallic-bronze hue, he has slitted pupiled, large almond shaped eyes. His tongue is forked, has concealed fangs and speaks with a hissing lisp. Shrine - unknown. (Omir)

- Sheru -
He is the bringer of night, and nightmares. With luminous yellow eyes, a black furred hyena head, and a cruel attitude, his visage matches his duties. Merely glancing at him in true form has left many mortals babbling for the rest of thier short existance. He is frequently at odds with Ronan, who also considers night his realm. Shrine - unknown. (Scalu)

- Volnar -
(Valtar)

- V'tull -
God of warfare and domination. His weapon is simply named the Slayer. His eyes are either black and impassive, or glowing red when he is in battle, his skin marble white, rippling with muscles, his hair silver. He is the champion of Lornon, the moon where the true ones dwell. His demeanor is determined, attitude rightious, obsessive and vengfull. If you are marked by V'tull, you can count your existance in only the time until he turns his attention to you. Shrine - unknown. (Z'Tarr)

- Zelia -
Called "Keeper of the Moon," she is a luna-tic. Stark raving bonkers, and her followers all wind up that way too. >>but the documentation before that appeared to be a player-driven project that happened 95-96.

Good info! Especially for attribution of early efforts.

However, this is the De-ICE-d variant, and happened after the 'Great Thaw' of late Aug or early Sep of 95, in Doug Reckoning (tm).

For example, the equivalent of Koar in the game when I joined Kulthea was Kuor, Valris his wife.

A quick snapshot of the Arkati pre-De-ICE very closely matches this: https://return-of-the-long-night.obsidianportal.com/wikis/the-lords-of-orhan

Unfortunately, while I can attest from failing memory to the alignment, it is not specific to Simutronics Gemstone III - and so even this doesn't pass muster.

In case anyone is wondering - The piece KANDOR shared by Laranna is attributed to somewhere between Fall 1995 and Winter 1997, as evidenced by:

1) Obvious de-ICING by deity name, which began mid-year 1995
2) absence of Aeia, patron of River's Rest (Evialla's website has this in its 1998-1999ish iteration)
3) a typo in Mularos's ICE name, which was added in error as MOLARIS and persisted as a typo in the SHIFT verb until approximately June, 2001. The deity's actual name was MORALIS
4) the copyright dates on her site in the Wayback Machine.

Doug:

The GS "Tomes" were where all the lore and background to GS3 lived before the de-ICING. It was not in game, there was no web site.

So none of the Ice-Age material will be found on web archives. I did not understand that was what you were looking for! The Tomes were added to the web when GS moved there in 1997.

The Tomes were their own menu item on the GEMSTONE Page at GEnie. I can't remember which choice number they were on the menu. Since I quit that same night, I don't know whether the original tomes were edited or pulled the night of the de-ICING.

They were taken, nearly word for word, from Rolemaster printed source material. It was where we went to find out the lore and background.

Every once in a while, notably for a few CoL things when that was introduced, Our tomes got new info added, but, for the most part, it was all.that.rolemaster.documentation from the Quellbourne and Shadow World books.

<<I'm not sure how long it took for an official file to appear after the move to the web, but the documentation before that appeared to be a player-driven project that happened 95-96. I'm not sure how much material was pulled in-game vs. from a sourcebook.>> - KANDOR

I was suspecting that this might be the case, that there was just a documentation gap for a couple of years, but I do have at least one seemingly official almost-modern document that has some archaic details on it like Sheru with a hyena head instead of a jackal. Teras Isle was 1996 but I know it had some source book based depictions of Luukos and Amasalen. There is a spot where Luukos even has a "lizardlike head", which comes from a drawing of him in a source book which does not actually say it.

There was a set of starter documents on the public facing side of the GemStone III website. It has the basic history of Elanthia document, but no gods document. These documents are all given a date of 3/9/1997 but that is clearly a posting date and not created-on dates. The GSIII user documentation one is actually dated 12/15/1995.

What I am looking for is anything official from after the De-ICEing. I was hoping there would be an actual Simutronics document. The one we had on the House Chesylcha website looks like it should be a copy and paste from an actual document from before the current version (~99/00?) but I do not know that with any absolute certainty.

I have the "Tomes of Kulthea" that were on GEnie, there were articles for the main Orhan gods. (Example: Under "Kuor" there is a link to a page with his Tomes #.)

<<Every once in a while, notably for a few CoL things when that was introduced,>>

I might be missing some of these ones if you do not mean the Broken Lands documents. There is one titled "Ditmar's Tale" that is implicitly CoL related, because they are pretty clearly Priests Arnak and the end of it is talking about the Dragonlord on Mur Fostisyr making an alliance with the Kral. But I do not know anything connected to it.

- Xorus' player

(There's also a subtle distinction between what is in the ICE source books and what might have been true uniquely in GemStone itself. The Temple of Darkness Poem that is part of the Broken Lands documentation for solving the Dark Shrine puzzle describes a few of the dark gods in ways that are different than their source book forms.)

Heh. I appreciate your vote of confidence. :)

Sadly, no. The tomes weren't anything that would affect my gameplay much--since I had many of the paper sourcebooks, and it's not like they were spell-lists that I needed to know for what to train in, or player-guides showing me where to hunt...--so I spent nearly no time over there at all.

Hell, I didn't even really start on the Boards until Oghier was foolish enough to mention them at a gather; I didn't get into them in a BIG way until, you know. The bank account ran out. <cough>HourlyFees<cough>

.

What's been documented here is already way beyond anything I kept.

The Tomes of Kulthea were put on the web by the Icemule Historical Society around the year 2000. But as you say, the vast majority of them are copied verbatim from a few source books, mostly the Master Atlas (1st edition) and Quellbourne with some Rolemaster law books. The Dark Gods and Great/Dark Spirits were in a separate "Addendum" book to the first Master Atlas later (both 1990), and then they were all together in the same book for Master Atlas second edition a couple of years later.

The way it is looking now is that what I have listed as "Version 2" was the initial form of the official gods document for the Elanthia setting, and the highlighted parts in "Version 1" and "Version 3" were Laranna summarizing the Master Atlas descriptions. I was just hoping to pin down a precise year for "Version 2" and finding it on a Simutronic website so I would know there's no corruptions in it. I would like to know for example if the Koar description was introduced before or after Mount Aenatumgana (early 1998).

Post de-ICEing was a pretty chaotic time. We spent at least a dozen months trying to pick up the pieces of what we had to do in less than a month's time when Iron Crown said, "Nope... contract breach. You can't use our stuff outside of GEnie and Prodigy." I remember looking at Elysia and saying, "We don't even have a MAP now...", which led to us drawing one out on the living room floor, ultimately leading to the geography we have now. Much of the post de-ICEing documentation happened the same way.

~~ What about the Human empire history?
~~ Where do the Aelotoi go?
~~ How are people going to get over to the Elven Nations once they're built? WHY are the Elves opening their borders now?
~~ For that matter... we don't even HAVE an elven history. We need to write that.
~~ I can't use this pantheon history anymore? Well... let's make something up.

A lot of it did get reviewed and we attempted as best we could to make the stuff connect in some logical way, but there was so much we had to re-write that plenty of it contradicts itself or earlier documents.

At the time, I had the mental image of ICE cutting off its nose to spite its face and wondering if Simutronics was going to outlive them. :)

Yeah, that was kind of like AOL and their "lets go to unlimited!"... while still in the "pay by time connected" contract with Simu.

<Yeah, that was kind of like AOL and their "lets go to unlimited!"... while still in the "pay by time connected" contract with Simu.>
<Stand back, and get out of the way of the rising tide of money.>

That was actually why I switched from Prodigy to AOL back then. Free GS3 as long as those AOL disks (then CDs) kept coming in the mail!

Course, it ment dealing with an hour of trying to connect to AOL and you had to pray neither AOL or GS crashed while you were hunting the whole time.... and that you didn't die and lose massive amounts of absorbed EXP cause of it (or all your stuff before that)....

Ultimately, I believe one of the reasons given for the move to the WEB was that move by AOL (and later Prodigy)... they would have ended up losing too much money come time for contract renewal.

On the original topic of the thread, I have a three ring binder somewhere with all the GS documentation I printed out back then.... if I can find it I'll check if I have anything about gods/religion in there, though it's a long shot. If there is, I can scan it in and email it to someone.

Oh, you were one of THOSE! :)

The problem with using the free AOL time was... it was always a new character. Discs were for new trial accounts, and characters were one/account. So yes, I had five Genie accounts. <cough>
(Although if Simu got paid for AOL trial accounts, I don't see any reason why Billing wouldn't have been willing to do changeovers from one account to the next.)

.

I have no hesitation in saying that Simu moved to the web because the AOL contract was going to come up for renegotiation, and AOL was going to STOP paying based on amount of time connected.
(Although if Simu got paid for AOL trial accounts, it's no wonder AOL was needing to renegotiate!)

Not if you knew the secret.... I have no idea now how I did it, but I went at least a year with the same characters on AOL without paying a cent before I had access to a card to pay for such things with.

I've started working on this again. I have the basics in place for the Dark Gods, but there is still more to be fleshed out. There's scattered bits of lore all over. Some of them were developed a lot more than others. Hrassk as far as I can tell wasn't explicitly Charon/Lornon based, though the Spider Temple's moonstone eyes would turn red with it. She's separated out as maybe a local god. I kept Kadaena with the Lornon set because of the insinuations about the Lords of Essaence and that moon and their origins.

Orgiana's (Eorgina) "Black Hel" sub-pantheon --- probably a faction of Charon gods and dark spirit servants --- is included near the bottom. So are the Hrassk (Arachne) priests. They have De-ICE'd names because they are mentioned inside the Spider Temple. I'm not sure if the Titans were ever directly relevant, but the Changramai existed. (*)

- Xorus' player

(*) The Black Hel powers existed in the game in at least a minor way. The Dancers of Inis (Ivas) are also separated out because they were not modernized.
