>>Guys, Kenstrom will not appreciate this, but your enthusiasm for the topic has made me want to spill the beans. Sir Thadston has actually been sent to oversee the conversion of the Landing into a themed amusement park for Turamzzyrian families who want a glimpse at the "wild frontier" and the "crazy outpost in the marches of the Empire."
not sure why, but the first thought that popped in my head when I read this was:

>I do take exception to your comment "It's your group now, run it however you like". That comment does not accurately portray what goes within the membership of the Dae'randir. I never considered the Dae'randir "my" group nor you nor any other member just a cog in the wheel. I view my role within the Dae'randir as watching over it more than leading it. That Laissez-faire approach allows members to act independently and with autonomy and it is only governed by some basic guidelines based on the principles on how Onar operates. Your own autonomy and independence within the Dae'randir since your return reflects that.
No doubt that textual response and context, and some degree of brevity, made that statement seem harder and more abrupt than what I intended. While some of this is undoubtedly not a topic I'd like to flesh out on the boards, my general feeling is summarized in the following VERY POLITE AND RESPECTFUL NON-CONFLICTUAL TONE: The mere fact that the Dae'Randir exists as an organization after my 4.5 year absence is very pleasing, and I absolutely give credit to the members and leadership for making that a reality. In no way do I wish to subjugate or criticize the roles of leadership, common rules or any thing along those lines.
However, as you pointed out, things were done differently when I was running things. They are not done that way now. You may take exception to my phrase, "It's your group now, run it however you like." but that's the status of things. The autonomy that you mention and endorse IS a choice of how to run things. That is not a criticism, that is ... I dunno... my acceptance of the situation that I returned to. OBVIOUSLY, whatever you are doing/have done has/is working. Who am I to argue against such success? Whether your leadership style is laissez faire or hands on or administrative tyrant (that was me!), the bottom line is that the group is functioning, involved and achieving their goals of however many events per year. The wheel is smooth and operating as expected, and I am a cog in that, since my return, which is all I would ask or expect, despite my roles in the past.
Maybe we can continue this conversation in another thread? Please? Having this conversation -here- is making me cringe. If I somehow was offensive or unclear in the above response, it is not my intention. I think you're doing/have done a fine job. Carry on, (with my full support even)!
*
>If my silence concerning Tayeros and his death created intrigue and paranoia among "certain groups" then you can probably discern that I took some pleasure in that. But I can assure you that there was no intent of shouldering a burden for you on my part. I was witnessed rescuing Nysina and I have not commented on that either.
No, that's fine. This was always speculation on (most) everyone's part anyway. But if anyone asks Turinrond of the truth of Wolf's involvement, he's not going to lie. He is likely to bend his response in order not to shed light on what remains unrevealed information. As you said earlier, no one's likely to believe him anyway, so we might all get sliced and diced for naught.
>Since I didn't do any thank yous yet, I did want to toss out a couple while we have this thread completely derailed, so vaguely still on topic, I have to say I rather much celebrate Mr. Coyote Bill over yonder and the progress he's made after returning from a long hiatus, who also has expressed repeatedly his OOC willingness and really kind of alluring and saucy need for dirty hot consequences etc. This is on top of not playing apologist or lawyertime OOCly and arguing technicalities in order to justify what his character did or didn't do- he presents them as 'Turinrond thought this was the way to go, I the player was lols and had fun with it.' That right there is class and a great example.
Am I blushing? I could be blushing. :-p
I've been thinking about things, especially since I've had a few moments of intense focus on the character and I can't really just take those for granted and ignore them. I overreacted somewhat to roles and circumstances last Spring and I've been trying to back off and rebalance after that very public nonsense.
The thing is... I don't want to ever play a straight out bad guy. The other thing is, there will ALWAYS be more opportunities for HEROES than there will be for villians. Even becoming a villian without abusing mechanics and PK'ing all over the place is really difficult to achieve, and requires (in my opinion), a very fine line of RP THAT OTHERS EMBRACE and even respect. But, let's face it - being annoying is going to get you killed or slept or silenced. Seen plenty of that. Threaten folks enough times and someone's going to call you out on it, or take offense to it, or you're just going to be seen as a big bag of all talk, no action. And I'm not a fan of being contrary for the sake of shock or impact - it's cartoonish to me. AND - we are far more likely to see an Imaera or Ronan or Koar "thing" - than an Onar "thing", because that's just the way things go, historically. I've been a hurler for however many years, because it fits my vision - I'm quite okay with things not being supported (rim shot!) HAHAHAHAHA. ;-)
Anyway, the point is, to me, it's very important that actions have consequences, because the challenge and adaptation of how the character deals with the consequences IS the RP, whether it's "Oh, this is terrible, I will never be bad again!" or "What? You did this TO ME? I'LL SHOW YOU!" or maybe somewhere in the middle. It has to happen. Otherwise, the character just gets to make stupid mistakes and carry on, as if that's realistic. We ALWAYS pay more for our mistakes than we gain for our successes. Life is terrible and funny that way.
While we're handing out kudos, I echo your sentiment towards Cruxophim. Amazingly well-played character. And, while she's somewhat quieter, I -loved- what Rhayveign did when the opportunity was presented to her, to take her character down a very dark path, without making a lotta noise about it. If/when dark opportunities present in the future, you better believe I'll be searching her out.
I loved this storyline, because of the moral grey area. Right out of a GRRM or Joe Abercrombie or Scott Lynch novel. And I could tell you, OOC, right here on the boards, what it is I'm trying to achieve with the character (all of which is probably obvious), but I want to challenge myself to see if I can make it happen organically, without just pushing it player to player or player to GM. We live in a world of instant gratifications - in this world, in this game, it's all about the journey. Epic storylines allow bigger steps, but the journey and the steps taken along the way are what can define the character and push the path. In my opinion.
So, yea, ole boy's gotta pay the price for what he's done this year, so that he can learn from it, and adapt, adjust and move forward.

I playerwise don't hold it against you, and fairness wise it's unfair to bring it up repeatedly and say 'SEE IT'S UR FAULT WAAGGH' ICly, so I deliberately try not to (which is admittedly just a bit metagamey in a fashion, but i'd wager acceptably). |
Yes! Metagamey! That's what I'm talking about when I say things like "I'm pretty sure the GMs mean for this to happen" or "mechanics kind of tie my hands on that." Thank you -- that's the word I was looking for. Within the game, I know my character might take a stand on this or blame another character for that, but as a player, I don't want to step on toes or make other people feel bad for their RP choices, not all of which are going to appeal to Lylia but almost all of which make me say "Whoa, that's so cool -- I never would have thought of that!" The only time I get frustrated is when I feel I've bumped up against an invisible wall of mechanics, and that doesn't happen often at all.
However, it's a shame if that's how you felt and for what it's worth I'm sorry that whole thing may not have been as fun as it could have been. |
Nah, I didn't take that stuff to heart, and I think you're a shining example of someone who can play a character who's got Very Definite Views yet always finds ways to make it clear that it's roleplay. Lylia may view Bristenn with narrow-eyed suspicion a good part of the time (and I'm sure it's mutual), but I never feel as though you're expressing any antagonism toward me. It's part of why I like RPing with you so much; I know I'm in good hands and won't walk away from it having had less fun than I was having going into it. Cruxophim's also very good about that, and I always get a polite "Hey, going to attack you now, if that's okay?" tell from him before he does anything that might leave a bruise. I'm consistently amazed at how many outstanding roleplayers I'm lucky enough to encounter every time I log in, and no matter how vitriolic Lylia gets, I hope everyone she encounters knows that underneath that RP, I'm thoroughly amused by a good IC conflict.

I'd thank Roblar, Ephya, Rtune, Seomanthe, Evia, Greganth, Kaedra, Clunk, Regwen, Fealoke, Hapenlok, Glyhne, Masrath, Sareyna, Falvicar, Goldtree, and even Hadya because they haven't been mentioned enough in this thread for their contributions. I'll even thank Jeril!
Even having said all that all the empaths or clerics who hold their triage locations for hours we don't see unless we die or the people who support and carry the word or let others at times lead and trust or step up when it's needed to give a helping hand at just the right moment when someone is sad or a bit overwhelmed. We salute you!
I like to provide logs and capture these memories because I don't want anyone to be forgotten. I normally don't make such posts or join in on perspective pieces much as I tend to enjoy giving snippets and observing on the forums, but I wanted people to know my feelings a bit on this one and even when you haven't been mentioned at any point people do notice each of us, you, and myself. I know it's important to be acknowledged so I wanted to expand a bit on some of the posts.
Mikos, Lothwyn, Voraviel, Auchand, Braden and Aephir I think taught us how to tell stories, how to weave a tale of epic proportion, and how to drive the fervor of the playerbase then Kenstrom and the current staff took so much of those positives and occasional failures around pacing or timing and created a "living" story that all of us are so excited to continue in.
This is a golden age of Gemstone IV. I speak for myself in this, but I witnessed nearly all of those events and stories from 1996 to now and I'm confident others share in the view. To those who went before to teach us and experiment to the new trials and experiences we face now. I salute all of you and those not mentioned by acknowledging it takes all of us to accomplish these riveting tales.

Fantastic find. If I would have just alt-f on the whole file I had sent after copying all the Wehnimer's Landing, Solhaven, and Cross Into Shadow folders that I had previously done I may have found this, but instead I was doing that to all the documentation around Hochstib, the Solhaven Cataclysm, and Ride of the Red Dreamer.
That is the first declaration of Wehnimer's Landing as a protectorate. It's attributed to Auchand on 11/17/2011. You have done so much work and storylines I didn't even remember you hung Brinn and Cryheart.
This is why I log!!!!!

<I spent all day thinking about Radeek's posts, which have been excellent for several weeks (months) now really, and his fervor about the Empire has returned with the latest announcement (it's why I cut logs the way I do. I want them to live instead of just NPC jump cut like a lot of edits do). Back to my point though, I kept inferring Radeek is Braveheart (He wasn't really Wallace, come on) and he's really pissed that Britain has a wooden fort and they are going to prima nocte his bride Phever. I know it's kind of a sidebar :)
Thanks Geijon, I used to write a long time ago just for fun (read that as before some of you were born) but I had gotten away from it. Now I do it to occupy my mind. I also post less than half of what I write, some is pretty dark (probably too dark for GS) and more is just my mind wandering down some path that may or may not fit in-game events. I also write a lot about the Tehir, but since there are so many different clans/tribes/groups of Tehir I don't post very much about them because I don't want people thinking that's the way it is with all Tehir.
And no, Rad's not real happy right now. His friends have asked him to be careful, they don't want the ax of the empire over our necks either but they believe violence isn't the answer, which is very hard for Rad to understand and accept. So, in short, yeah, he's having issues right now.
