I think a small chance to every once in a while trigger a reaction by the shield that would have some effect on the critter.
For example starting at 3% odds to activate up to 8% with lore and spell ranks. The Wizard Shield will solidify like a flare and become much more beneficial, higher DS. If it's solid then it may have a chance to disarm the critter temporarily, from their meeting an impenetrable force field.
