Dual blunt wielding character... best profession? 11/02/2011 08:55 AM CDT
Looking to swing two blunts. Wondering what the best race/profession combo would be? I was using a rogue but found myself basically standing out in the open... should I try a warrior?

Why were you standing out in the open with a rogue?? I have a rogue with training in OHE and TWC, who is perfectly capable of hiding and ambushing. OK, she's a pure combat rogue and can't even open a kobold box; but she's hell on wheels when it comes to slicing and dicing.

Warriors get better redux, cheaper weapon and armor costs. So much so that you could train in blunt weapons, TWC and toss in shield as well, for those times when you may be facing a foe that casts bolts at you.

Right now I am not going to favor either profession over the other. Both are quite capable of using two weapons. The basic difference is that rogues are designed to attack from ambush, while warriors usually stand out in the open and duke it out.

OK, my rogue character actually trained in OHE, Brawling (being in Voln) and TWC, as a rogue. Expensive, but doable. A side benefit of training in both OHE and brawling is being able to use katars; these are (arguably) the hardest hitting one handed weapons.

She is 33 trainings; titans and frost giants are in the upper 30s (36 and 38 if I recall properly). So she has no problem reasonably overhunting. In the capture below (a typical hunt example), substitute twin morningstars for the katars to imagine your own character attacking.

Strictly my opinion and not an official stance. I personally like the half-krolvin warrior combo for dual blunt weapons. I used a war hammer and a crowbill.

A half-krol is a good idea. My own TWC blunt user is a half elven warrior and uses two morning stars both of which enhance OHB bonus.

IMHO go with a high dex race...halfling, just make sure you get everything max lightened.

Regarding profession I'd say Warrior for ease of TP's but if you want more flavor there is always Paladins.

I personally do not think paladins are a good choice for a TWC build any time before the cap. The points are so scarce you cannot do it without dropping well bellow standard on baseline training requirements.

No hamstring Throgg? Seems to me that would be the best way to get a titan off its feet for the kill shot, with the induced rt it wouldn't be able to keep breaking your stun and standing up.

As for warrior vs rogue, it probably is a little easier tp wise to do that as a warrior but it is all on what you want to do. If you want to hide and ambush be a rogue, if you want to hunt from the open be a warrior. Now I have seen people do the reverse but it just seems silly to me because of the training costs involved. Hiding and ambushing is a good bit more expensive for a warrior and they don't get the professional bonuses a rogue does. And on the flip side the things that make hunting from the open easier, MoC, armor, and PF cost more for a rogue to train in.

Didn't have enough CMan points for that yet; as mentioned she's only 33 trainings. She has 4 ranks shadow mastery, 3 of disarm, and one surge. Hamstring is certainly a future possibility.

Thanks for all the tips. I like the thought of lots of MOC and swinging two weapons. I think I'll try a Warrior. Totally confused on stats but I'll figure it out. THanks all!

One more question. How much dodge should I be training in since I will have no shield training? and how much CM?

At least 1X dodge

You can get by with x1 for quite a while but you really want to be as close to x2 as you can get without neglecting any of your other skills.

Personally I recomend neglecting dodge in favor of armor and more focused mstrike hits. Get to plate as quickly as possible. Plate + redux > dodge

I forget how much dodge I had before I briefly tried a blunt/shield build, but afterwards I was only x1 in dodge(at around 67) and didn't feel the need for more until around 92. This was about the time they made killing bandits a task, with the heavy weapons they swung sometimes and the high ASs that others had at times I wanted more DS. Soon after that I also started hunting Nelemar, most things weren't too bad but a mstrike from a radical with one of those forks sure wasn't pretty. I'd live through those but taking a beating like that is going to end your hunt or at least pause it for a while. At the lower levels having only x1 in dodge doesn't hurt much but the more levels you gain the more of a difference there is in DS between x1 and x2.

>>without neglecting any of your other skills.

I also said that. I've told a lot of people to get into fullplate as soon as they can although that isn't what I did, but at the time I had still been learning the game. I've always been x1 in MoC and never felt the cost of getting more worth it, if they hadn't changed the extra strike thresholds after 55 to what they are now I might have considered it but now its just a far distant goal.
