Job hunts from... 07/02/2015 05:42 AM CDT
Yeah so June was insane. Job interview at Argonne National Labs Physics Division and the National Suerconducting Cyclotron Lab at Michigan State.

Argonne was about 16 hours of interviews, and MSU more like 13 I think.

Add that in with a flight to and from Tokyo, an undergrad reunion, meeting a new foster kid my mother has, then flying to Beijing for a 9-hours-a-day 4-day symposium. Oh yeah and I'm supposed to be finalizing my dissertation somewhere in here.

:::pant:::

At least June is over!

Man!

All of that has just got to cut into your GemStone time, doesn't it? How can you tolerate it?!?

Yes. I basically didn't play for 2 months besides running CHE events and meetings.

Upon a time in recent years, I was okay if my main didn't do his Gift each week. It became normal. So I just extrapolated it to all my characters for like 6 weeks.

I guess it does look like a pity post, doesn't it? I must have failed somewhere in here. I think I was trying to express exhaustion as well as excuse for absence.

I have papers published at both those laboratories, and I was a summer student at Argonne a decade ago, so not only have I been to those places, but I know a lot of those people.

Still. 16 hour interviews? Who does that? It was actually really fun, if not kind of tiring stuck in the middle of all the rest of the mess. I think it's just like this endurance test.

The last interview I did lasted 36 hours over forested terrain covering 100 square miles. I don't regret what I had to do over that day and a half or to whom I had to do it to, but gosh, the barista job ended up not really being worth it.

Well, the last person I was scheduled with was, naturally, the director of the Physics Division. We shot the crap about...whatever for about 10 minutes...since we know each other. Then he got to business, with his very amazing accent of pseudo Flemish/French/Belgian/Something. "How was your time here?"

::pause::

Me: "Actually...it was awesome. Surprisingly."

Him: "That's what I like to hear."

But, I wasn't lying.
