As a warrior, I found hunting this area to be pretty easy. I would suggest carrying an aqua wand and occasionally waving it at your weapon (and armor if needed) to keep the heat down and avoid damaging (and stunning, potentially fatal) heat damage. Successful hits by you on these critters will heat up your weapon. Ranger spells are handy in this area as well.
