Well done event tonight Qortaz. I think you had everyone's attention from the getgo when you disintegrated your soulstone wand. I like the attributes of the anniversary edition enchiridion I've come across so far, quite a nice personalized touch.

This actually tends to slow the process down, because we have to re-read it again instead of work on things that are already in the works.

Because you have no idea how the coding could potentially work, so your ability to accurately judge how easy it may or may not be is non existent?

>This actually tends to slow the process down, because we have to re-read it again instead of work on things that are already in the works.

I appreciate the concept the spending time on "public relations" and constantly browsing the forums to keep us filled in and up to date can take away time from coding. It makes sense. But it does not make for a good philosophy when trying to help us understand things. Why? Because it takes away any sense of accountability.

Under that mind-set, if we try to keep ideas, suggestions and fixes at the forefront of everyone's mind, we can be "blamed" for any delays. If we DON'T, then it gives a carte-blanche to take however long to finish something (or never finish it at all) because we have seen time and time again that one of the key ways for some of these oversights to be resolved is persistance. If Moredin and others had not obsessively pushed for the Workshop change, I have no doubt it my mind it would not have been finished. And suggesting it "once", just to make sure, then waiting patiently? It wouldn't have worked. Apparently, Moredin first suggested the workshop change around 2003 . . . maybe I'm wrong, I thought that was when Illusions came out (thats before my time). I'm not on the coding side, so I can't say for certain that switching the flag in these rooms to a magic workshop was hard, but I can say pretty firmly it was probably not ten years hard. Only by constantly reminding those in development roles was this concept not forgotten forever.

Right now, Moredin (and I'd add myself to that) is pursuing feedback, ANY kind of feedback regarding an Alchemy question with the now overpriced recipe for 740 chalks. It is just one of half a dozen serious questions which have been raised time and time again in the past six months regarding the system, such as potion duration reduction from the recent spell changes, and it has been met with utter silence. I'm not saying we have to be coddled and have our every post responded to by a name in red, but there comes a time when PR is important. If having to re-read the same suggestion every week is so time consuming, why not give a response to at least alleviate concerns?

I know this isn't really the right place for this conversation, but I don't think throwing out a comment like that is fair, and I felt it needed to be responded to. Sorcerer players are pretty demanding, but we are also relatively patient as long as we know things are being worked on. Sometimes, a little reassurance goes a long way.

This is correct to an extent . . . what seems to us like it might take 10 minutes may take 10 hours to do, maybe more. Unfortunately, the change Moredin is referencing here took 10 years, during which time 2 professions have been released, a new society, and the adventurer's guild. The change? Adjusting 6 (I believe) rooms, 1 in all but 2 of the Sorcerer guilds, from a normal room into a magical workshop. One element that required some time is that the person who ended up changing them wanted to find a suitable "room" from a logical perspective, so they had to peruse each of the guilds to look for one . . . they even decided that two of the guilds didn't have a suitable room, and thats why two of them don't have one. Is that a super fast task? No, its not, but having explored them myself, it takes no more than 10 minutes per guild.

To say that without personal knowledge of the coding system we can't have an accurate gauge to measure development time is true. But we also aren't stupid, and you can look at something in development and realize that it shouldn't take TOO long to work on, a few months to a year, as opposed to a decade. In the case of this fix, I suspect it was years of getting the run around, with various GMs passing the buck, between Sorcerer devs who had little control of the Guilds apparently, to Town devs, who then knew nothing of the guilds, back to Sorcerer devs . . . it actually had nothing to do with how long it took to code.

if houses can request workshops for IP from either new or existing rooms, I don't see how it can take 10 years to change the existing rooms in the guilds. So yes, I do have some idea.

Cheers to that. And let me also say, Thank You. In spite of any negative comments that have come forth on this thread, this is probably the biggest thing to happen to demonology in a long time. I'm even starting to keep a demon around almost constantly again, and that is something I very rarely bothered with in the past. Once I get an uncommon rune I expect this to continue more or less indefinately unless I find some reason to go to a town other than Teras or Ice Mule. (I get tired of getting arrested for letting the illusion fall while I'm caught up in whatever interesting tidbits people are debating here on the boards)

<<Along the same lines as my earlier question, is more demon lore required for the shien'tyr-darkling and shien'tyr-shadowling runes than for the shien'tyr-shien rune? I'm not aware of the darkling and shadowling runes having been offered in the past.>>

darkling/shadowling/shien should all have the same increased demonology requirements. Why some valences were coded with specific sub-types and not others? That is something I cannot answer. However, I am willing to try my best to accommodate you with everything I have at my disposal.

When you say 'all have the same increased demonology requirements', do you mean that all three of these runes are equal, and have the same base success rate of 0% (for any valence/demon combination, referred to as Tier2 on krakiipedia), or that they all have 'increased demonology requirements' like the tier3 summons, with suggested 125 ranks of demonology lore.

As a newb to sorcerery (just made level 25!), I'm interested in learning a darkling/shadowling, but it's not clear to me whether these are subtypes of the shien, or peers. I don't want to ask for an uncommon rune that I will never be able to use (at 125 demonology ranks)

All of the runes to be taught at Friday's event require 100 demonology ranks for a 100% chance of summoning outside of a summoning chamber. That is, they are all Tier 2. The same was true at the grik'tyr meeting. Only at the lorae'tyr meeting did some of the runes (abyran'sa and, possibly, abyran'a) require Tier 3 training.

To my knowledge, the shien'tyr-darkling and shien'tyr-shadowling runes have never before been offered.

I was planning to post a FAQ tomorrow morning, but I'll go ahead and do it now.

Q: When is it?
A: Friday at 9:00 p.m. eastern in Prime. See post 695.

Q: Where is it?
A: The Faendryl embassy in Ta'Illistim. See posts 558 and 614 for directions.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: It's free!

Q: What runes will be taught?
A: Shien'tyr-aishan, shien'tyr-arashan, shien'tyr-darkling, shien'tyr-shadowling and shien'tyr-shien. See post 581.

Q: If I choose shien'tyr-shien, what demon type will I get when I use it?
A: You randomly get either a darkling or a shadowling.

Q: What's the difference between a darkling and a shadowling?
A: There is no known mechanical difference.

Q: Are the shien'tyr-darkling and shien'tyr-shadowling runes harder to use than the shien'tyr-shien rune?
A: No. Shien'tyr-shien, shien'tyr-darkling and shien'tyr-shadowling all require the same number of demonology ranks. See post 589. As a matter of fact, all of the runes being taught at this event require the same number of demonology ranks.

Q: What else do I need to know?
A: You can get a free Enchiridion Valentia that is fancier than the ones sold in the guilds. It's worth going just for that. You can only get one for the entire series, so if you got one earlier, you can't get another one this time, unless Vathon forgets that he already gave you one.

Considering I am in possession of a shien'tyr-darkling runestone (it was given to me; I didn't make it)...it seems there's at least one sorcerer in the lands with the uncommon subtypes of darkling and/or shadowling. It's difficult to tell for certain about the lore requirements. I had assumed they would require 100 ranks, like shien'tyr-shien, but I have 75 ranks and still failed several times in a summoning chamber. I believe, however, it was actually the summoning chamber at fault. It may warrant further investigation, in any case.

Krakiipedia lists Drigore and Allereli as knowing darkling, and no one for shadowling.

The other post has me a bit worried that shadowling/darkling runes are more difficult than a 'shien' rune, though

I love my little sorceress, but she's an elf so doing illusions is hard. As such, I haven't really done much with her regarding demons, so I don't understand how all this rune stuff works.

How often are we given access to learning uncommon runes? Is this something I want to take advantage of when offered even though I likely can't use it yet? (only have 27 ranks of demonology).

I'll read up on it on Krakiipedia but wouldn't mind some in game help. Feel like volunteering for some mentoring, Heathyr?

This series of events is definitely something everyone should take advantage of with any sorcerer character capable of casting the spell. Take 10 minutes to read up on the character and usefulness of each demon and decide which one you want.

Illusions does get easier as you go, fortunately. You can make things easier for yourself by pre-casting a few minutes of Presence on yourself, saving Light scrolls to lighten the room you're working in, and getting lots of Haste imbeds. If you can, keep your Perception skill at 1x. If you can find a guild master like Moredin to work with, that can help make things go much faster, too. Other than that, just keep at it and you'll get through it...eventually. :)

<<<<How often are we given access to learning uncommon runes? Is this something I want to take advantage of when offered even though I likely can't use it yet? (only have 27 ranks of demonology).>>>>

You'll definitely want to take advantage of any opportunity you get, including Vathon's lecture series. Up until recently, uncommon runes were exceedingly rare. They're still rare, but thanks to GM Qortaz and this series, we all have the opportunity to learn at least one. Since other opportunities are still fairly rare, I'd definitely give it some thought and pick a demon you'd like to learn. I can't help much with that decision, honestly, because there are many and varied reasons for picking a demon that go beyond basic mechanics. But even if you later decide you got the "wrong" one, you'll still have more than most people. So this is a no-brainer. Definitely grab a rune!

Bear in mind, however, that you don't have to pick one by Friday. Vathon's series will include three more lectures, featuring each of the three major valences. So this isn't your last chance, by any means.

<<unless Vathon forgets that he already gave you one.>>

I have a list and I check it twice! However, on the off chance I do flub and give someone an extra one, know this... They are attuned to you, they cannot be sold at a shop, and are basically worthless to anyone except the person they are given to. So, there is that.

Hmmm....

I'm thinking I really want a Grantris uncommon rune. I'm not entirely sure how the process works, but it looks like it was given out last time? Will there be another opportunity?

Or should I try and just go for a rune this Friday, since I'm not sure if i will be around for any future runs.

And um.. last question, is there any particular rune type that is better then the other?

Thanks!

it's a personal decision, you have to decide for yourself. They chart doesn't include demon personality, which might also be a factor.

Yes, since there is still a full round of rune teachings on the way, I strongly encourage you to research the different options. All have mechanical strengths and weaknesses as well as RP ...consequences...for lack of a better term.

One thing to keep in mind is the probability that you would be able to summon a particular demon without knowing its specific rune. Lorae'tyr has 4 demon types, so you have a 25% chance of getting the one you want with a lorae'try general rune. Shien'tyr has three. And grik'tyr has two, so you already have a 50% chance of getting the demon you want from grik'tyr with a general rune. That's not to say you shouldn't learn grik or imp, since those demons are both very useful. It's just something to keep in mind.

Some random, unorganized thoughts:

(1) Aishans can't hold mana or coins, and they can't deliver messages.

(2) Arashans can't hold coins.

(3) Shien (shadowlings and darklings) hold more mana than any other type of demon, but they carry few coins.

(4) Igaesha are the first demons you learn to illusion; you have to summon an igaesha to advance in illusions.

(5) In my opinion, grik'tyr demons have the best balefire flares for most situations.

(6) Although verloks and grantris carry a lot of items, they hold very little mana, and are bad at mana sharing.

(7) Grantris demons can only deliver messages in elven.

(8) Verloks lose their illusion when delivering messages. That's not in Krakiipedia. Am I remembering it correctly?

(9) When it comes to exceptional abilities, arashans can control webs, abyran'sa (not being taught at this series of events) can break minor sanctuaries, imps can break Bard sanctuaries, verloks shed magic feathers, shien have a special message delivery ability in dark places, and aishans have an RP ability (player designed, if I remember correctly) to predict a person's death. The arashan web control and the shien message delivery both have cool factors of 9.5.

(10) Imps and abyrans are well rounded in their abilities, not too good at anything and not too bad at anything.

You are actually being a bit generous here, depending on one's perspective. since within Abyran there is Abyran'a and abyrn'sa and within Verlock, there's 3 subtypes of Verlock.

This is the reason that for Jurporia, Lorae'tyr-Abyran was the obvious choice, because at least it gives close enough to a 50/50 shot at Abyran'sa which can break the minor sanctuaries that he hates with such a passion.

Open the book to the last page. Wave the book at the demon to be recorded. To overwrite an existing entry, nudge the book until the entry is highlighted and then wave.

If you get a white aishan, be sure to record it.

Righty-o. Merry Christmas. I give you 12 sleepless hours of my life in the form of code. :P

As there's no real instructions included upon buying, and some of the uses of it are kind of odd, here's the breakdown of the features included with your new volumes.

Overall, any special effects, etc, are only usable by Sorcerers. Any person can obtain one and read all the info within. These items are not attuned indefinitely, but can be personalized by any Sorcerer (and re-personalized).

Point:

Point the volume at any demon and it will flip to the page pertaining info on that specific demon. If you see a funny-looking demon, be sure to do this -- you could've stumbled on a new archetype of demon and thus become a part of history as the first one who summoned it! (No, we're not kidding.)

Runestone identification:

If you're just too lazy to look it up or have an inclination to be flashy, drop a demonic runestone on the volume and it'll give you some info on it.

Locking and Unlocking:

If it's not already locked, you can LOCK the volume so that only you can UNLOCK it. When unlocked, any other sorcerer can lock it. While locked, no one else can pick it up save for the original sorcerer who locked it.

Demon Log (as opposed to Yule):

When you wave the volume at a demon you've summoned, the volume will record its short (15/15/15) description on the thirteenth page so you can show it off to your colleagues. You can record up to 10 demons, and can signify which slot you'd like them to go in by NUDGEing the volume.

Bookmarking:

Tap the volume to bookmark the current page you're on. When opening the book again, it'll open to that page. Tap it again to unbookmark it.

That's about all of its main functions -- there's other fluffy things, which I'll leave you all to discover. For those wondering where they are, they're in the library (not the guild shops) of every sorcerer guild out there. They're also pricey.
