Republican candidates for president have been telling primary voters that the reason for the housing and banking crises was too much government regulation. The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, CNN and the Washington Post have all debunked that lie, yet the Republican candidates continue to repeat it.

Do the Republican candidates believe what they are saying? Are they saying it because it's what their constituents want to hear? More importantly, would they by reducing government regulation of banks to a level even lower than it was during the Bush administration, when the banking crisis peaked?
