Returning Paladin 09/07/2015 02:51 PM CDT
So after basically 10 years, I have returned to GS and am looking for suggestions on training/cmans/shield manuevers with the upcoming fixskills that I've ready we will all get. I'm sure at the time I had a rationale for all of the training decisions made...but now I don't recall what those are. Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Raliver (at level 77), your current skill bonuses and ranks (including all modifiers) are:
Skill Name | Current Current
| Bonus Ranks
Armor Use..........................| 250 150
Shield Use.........................| 256 156
Combat Maneuvers...................| 209 109
Blunt Weapons......................| 256 156
Multi Opponent Combat..............| 155 55
Physical Fitness...................| 177 77
Dodging............................| 136 38
Arcane Symbols.....................| 120 30
Magic Item Use.....................| 90 20
Harness Power......................| 177 77
Spirit Mana Control................| 105 25
Spiritual Lore - Blessings.........| 40 8
Spiritual Lore - Religion..........| 105 25
Perception.........................| 140 40
Climbing...........................| 140 40
Swimming...........................| 120 30
First Aid..........................| 105 25

Spell Lists
Minor Spiritual....................| 20

Spell Lists
Paladin............................| 40

Raliver, your Combat Maneuver training is as follows:

Skill name Mnemonic Ranks
Shield Bash sbash 4
Feint feint 4
Precision precision 2
Specialization I wspec1 3
Surge of Strength surge 3

Available Combat Maneuver Training Points: 4

Raliver, your Shield Specialization training is as follows:

Skill name Mnemonic Ranks
Tower Shield Focus tfocus 5

Available Shield Training Points: 116

Also, can you change the type for Weapon Spec without unlearning it? If not, I will just unlearn prior to new fixskills. Obviously I took shield bash as a CMAN because shield manuevers didn't exist.

Thanks in advance.

Also, thinking of switching from Voln to GoS. I liked Voln for some RP value but more or less didn't want to be CoL. GoS is rather appealing at the moment. Thoughts?

Paladins shouldn't be expecting a fixskill from HSN, but you ought to have your annual one from May, should to want to use it.

My paladin is mid-50s, so I won't be an expert for training advice. All-in-all it looks totally reasonable, though I'd say you'd want more lore probably. The lore benefits are really good these days, and even my level 53 or 54 paladin has more ranks than you!

Given that you already have the CMAN Surge, I'd think you'll be happier to continue in Voln for a bit. There was a big overhaul for Voln, and I think for a paladin it's really tough to beat these days. You use 1607 to keep Surge perpetually running and eating your stamina, and use favor for Courage, Protection, Supremacy, Restoration, and Transcendence.

3 Surge is exactly what I like. Between that, 1625, and an adv guild badge you can be near your max strength of 140. Most the other CMANs are very race or gear-oriented. I had Toughness for my halfling, or Precision for use of a flail (guess which paladin I play), and now have Tainted Bond for the ensorcelled flail. I've personally never been big on Feint, but it's what almost everyone else loves so I'm not going to steer you down the dark path.

I assume for ARMOR points you're full up on Fluidity to T4.

Never used a shield in recent years, so I'm no help there.

For starters with Lore, specifically, 10 ranks of summoning will let you infuse 1615 into your 1625 weapon, and get an extra target for 1630, as well as some extra DF on 1605 and maybe some other gimmicks. At nearly level 80, I think it's easy to justify those 10 ranks at least. The distribution of further lore entirely depends on you, but religion for 1617/1640, summoning for more of the above (40 to self-1620), and blessing for most anything else.

WELCOME BACK

The Paladin Base / Lore Review last summer, as well as the Voln updates about 2 or 3 years ago, have gone a long way to improving a class I already loved. I think you're definitely going to enjoy your return. I converted my 2003-era warrior to a paladin on a whim shortly before the release of monks and the Voln overhaul, and I've absolutely been loving that character.

If you decide to stick it out for Voln, check out Voln armor, it's amazeballs. https://gswiki.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Voln_armor

Scroll down to 1600s: https://gswiki.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Lore_chart

If thinking about GoS, for mechanics hope you are aligned in a way to set trolls afire: https://gswiki.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Holy_critical

And check out the overhaul before quitting Voln. Symbol of Mana, for another example, is only favor for 50 mana each 5 minutes. Much better than the alternatives offered by GoS or CoL! That's 3 Divine Strikes, 2 Crusades, or...whatever: https://gswiki.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Order_of_voln

Thanks so much for the advice. I loved the benefits of lore and its good to see some of the changes that make it moreso. Sticking with Voln makes sense with how surge can be used with 1607 (which means I should probably max out surge ASAP).

As far as the fixskills, I'm pretty certain I read somewhere where a GM was quoted as saying everyone gets a fixskills after HSN, but I could be wrong. If I find it again, I'll repost. Either way, looks like I do have that earlier fixskills so it doesn't much matter.

Thank you again. I loved this class back before I took my hiatus and has been a lot of fun so far.

Just reread your comment about Surge. Is it worth going more points for the shorter duration or is 1607 enough to make it not matter?

Voln has changed since you've been about and has new symbols so I'd take a look first before you make the switch. Abilities such as getting your spells back after you get raised are nice... just for starts

Don't worry about the duration changes for Surge. You're already at 3 ranks. Check the total STR value you have with you 1625 weapon and Surge running. STR stat (nor any other) cannot surpass 140 total. Between a fully bonded weapon and 3 Surge, it should be 134 which is getting quite close to 140. A badge or some minor enhancives will push this to 140, and you can be on your way using CMANs for something else. Definitely do not go past 4 ranks though...because it's wasted entirely as the 32 from Surge and 10 from 1625 is more than 40 over 100.

Yes. I have also heard and read this now, too. At the time of my post, while I'd seen some rumors, it was not yet confirmed for me, so I was being conservative.
