Dupe them. Make it temporary. They fade after a week. Have the original item held in a laboratory of sorts. One dupe at a time. Lose it? Too bad. Wait a week. The original item is safe, though.

That is the greatest idea I have ever seen posted here. Besides the sad fact that it probably wouldn't play well with my guy's paladin bonding, it is incredible. You can bet alot more of my fancy toys would see light if I could do something like this. A sort of spectral copy. Linked so only one could be made at a time. You could rent fancy gear, or just keep your own stuff safe while still using it.

Still sounds like a great way to bypass all item-loss mechanics.

I really disagree with that whole "Take their stuff" ethic to upper-end hunting, but there's not much I can do about it. If that's a concern, it would be easy enough to prevent the loaner from duping their own item, and the duped item would, of course, be bonded to the loanee, so it couldn't be passed off.

I love the idea and would champion it as well.

But I think the larger problem is 'multiple copies' of the item in question being around.

What happens if the owner decides to whip it ou and start using, while it has been 'loaned' (no matter the terms) to another. Should it be allowed? Should one fade, or one not work?

I think it would be a blast -- and a great way to move high end items without fear of getting into an item that isn't as useful as one might think. Try before you buy type thing.

Still, I don't see a good way to control it to a single count of the item in question -- other mechanics' debates totally aside for the moment.

Limiting it should be relatively simple. It'd be a string of code something like:

"If ObjectCopy = False; Allow; End, Elseif ObjectCopy = True; Deny; End"

That said, I don't really think coding it would be the hard part.

I agree, it could be that simple (if you added time bounding).

Is the deny statement intended to suggest logic like "if you loaned it, you don't have it to use"?

That would solve the problem, and likely limit the utility.

Oh, and I would truly enjoy a silver subscription service where I can go to get an in-game list of all my registered items, and their properties. Just want to be sure this original thought remained central to the theme of some of these posts.

Kind of modified off the manifest? Need to pay 10K a month silvers. After 6 months of registered ownership, will start including all facts about the item known.

Something like that. Yeah. . .

>If that's a concern, it would be easy enough to prevent the loaner from duping their own item, and the duped item would, of course, be bonded to the loanee, so it couldn't be passed off.

Still very abusable. You just need one trusted friend (or MA account) to hold the item for you and LOAN it to you. Perhaps if it were annoying enough that it wouldn't be worth it in most cases. Say, if for every week you lent it, it had to first be kept inaccessible for a week? Though that would still be a good deal for someone with a couple nice things to rotate between. Maybe restrict how many LOAN'd different items you can use in a certain period?

I would totally love a LOAN mechanic, but I don't think they're ready to give up on item loss.

As for the mechanics. It could possibly borrow from the phantom bandolier weapon mechanics. Just make them last longer, only allow one at a time, and have them poof if the original item is taken out of the "bandolier". Though I think the problem with any "dupe and fade" approach would be attaching a new script to an already scripted item. Not sure if they could get around that somehow.

Anything can be done in GSL, just a matter of the work involved.

There were a lot more issues than just item loss, and while the people working on it were cognizant of many, others kept cropping up.

Loss of enhansive charges, x-day item charges, items with temporary abilities, and charges, items crumbling, item degration (aka breakage),etc.

There was even a larger concern of keeping a table that touched every loaned item semi-often t and the lag that may incur.

This is not a simple system, and phantom duplicates will not account for any of them.

While it is a useful idea, and a needed one in some ways, its a LOT of work. The alternative is a much simpler system using something akin to mark done by both parties and if its not returned in X time, a GM would look into it and return it IF its not been destroyed. This has the downside of using staff time.

Frankly, at this stage of GS, I think they could largely get rid of item loss all together, and instead just implement repair as part of forging WITHOUT permanent degradation and be done with it. There's no need for it as a form of attrition; there's plenty of that going on without item loss/degradation. ...but we're really getting side tracked here.

You guys could charge rental fees so people could feel uber for a week, and you get a steady stream o free silvers! It'd be like getting royalties for being awesome." -- Alsthar

Re: So Ildran gave me a verb idea: "rent"
##: 640

Mechanically, this would be along the lines of "exchange", where the syntax would be:
rent <item> to <person | position> for <duration> at <cost> [renewable]
<item> could be an actual item, or it could be a property deed (Premium Home, or Player-Run Shop). In the case of a deed, full access is conferred on the target character.
<person | position> could be either an individual character, or an Officer of either a Player-Run Organization or CHE House; in the case of a position, the exact title must be used (i.e. "scrivener", for Twilight Hall).
<duration> would be in the format ##d##h##m##s, where the D H M S characters are mandatory; if you want 0 days, you put in 0d.
<cost> is expressed as a one-time fee, just like "exchange".
[renewable] is an optional flag; if present, <cost> can be paid any time during <duration> to add <duration> to the existing rental.

.

I would suggest adding a capability to the Bank teller accept rental renewal fees on your behalf--for a modest premium--so that you need not be in-game in order to collect.

.

.

An additional verb would also need to be added:
foreclose <item> from <person> <now | duration>
to force the return of the rented item.

<now | duration> would be a mandatory flag indicating whether you want the bruisers in the Bank Collections Department to go out and retrieve <item> from <person> (assuming that you actually have a rental out to that person) immediately--for a modest premium--or whether you want to allow <person> to keep <item> until the previously established rental <duration> expired.

In either case--whenever they get it back--the Brute Squad puts the item in "a <yourcharactername> box" [read: a Constabulary box] in a secure room added to the Bank.

.

Additional requirements:
- The rented item would be flagged as though it were silvers belonging to a newbie: you cannot "give/exchange/sell" (or, of course, "rent"!), you cannot "drop/put".

- The rented item would be immune to player-character maneuvers (such as "disarm").

- If <item> is a container, anything inside the container acquires the identical attributes (such as <duration> and <nosell>). This would allow the use of such things as Girvahk's imflass greatswords [each of which has a matching case] or the short sword pair "Rhyme" and "Reason" [which also have a matching case].

.

.

.

.

Probably a recursive coding nightmare, but what the hell! I can ask, right? This would let people like Ardwen "rent vaalorn sword to krakii for 90d0h0m0s at 3000000 renewable", and let me use Sorrow (for the low, low price of a million per month) rather than keeping things stuffed in lockers or sitting on store counters.

I'll chime in and say that item loss should be limited to disarm and curse, if that.

Item loss isn't fun, somebody else using an uber weapon in OTF really isn't going to affect me much if any at all, and it's failed to remove any items of real scarcity from the game as far as I know.

People getting banned is the only way that stuff is getting removed from the game.

Side question, Kerl, what ended up being in those boxes at the Sheru Monastery opening? I remember the event, but not what was in those footlockers.

<<Side question, Kerl, what ended up being in those boxes at the Sheru Monastery opening? I remember the event, but not what was in those footlockers. -Darkpiper>>

There were 4 foot lockers, one at the end of each bunk in the guard's chambers, (note, last I checked, 3 of them disappeared in the GS4 redo or some time around then).

Syn picked the locks on the lockers, and died twice in the process if I remember right. I don't know if it was that night or something else, but I didn't see him for probably 2 years after that.

In each locker, was a set of krodera full plate, a krodera kite shield, and a steel bastard axe. The shields varied in properties some, but all 4 had the natural properties of krodera and enhanced TD. The plate as far as I know was all the same, and all 4 sets also had the natural property of krodera and enhanced TD. One set of armor was lost almost immediately: Kinshack gave it to a certain petulant idiot after she whined like a baby, (the one who bought a reknowned mage of that era and later got banned as part of the ranger rod/pawnshop incident). Kinshack didn't realize what he was giving away at the time and did his own whining about it once he realized it. Anyway, she promptly lost it by sticking it in a disk and getting disco'd while doing some enchanting. The only bastard axe I ever tinkered with was 2x enchanted. I am confident at least two of the shields are still around, and I know 2 of the sets of armor still exist. I currently use one of the shields (which I bought years later) and one set of the plate which I've had ever since that day.

Another item for the legendary list:

An ancient dead crystal ball

weighs under 2 pounds with no long description.

From what I understand (or understood as it is possibly from ice-age era), it allows the possessor to learn spells from two extra spell circles, but it works like charges. Once you chose that sphere of magic, it burns one of the charges. Not sure how it would work in the GS4 environment now with how they have the ranks capped at 3x for a pure though...

Ummm, an ancient dead crystal ball? As opposed to what? An ancient live crystal ball? An odd description; one would think "inactive" or "non-functional" might be more appropriate wording.

A couple of them changed hands recently. There's a handaxe and a battle axe that you might be able to get your hands on. Insodus sold the handaxe, and Helsfeld sold the battle axe, if I recall. I'm not sure who bought them, though.

Pity about keeping it, since battleaxe was the one most appealing to me (more characters could potentially use it). I'll keep my eyes peeled for the others, and you enjoy that one!

I owned the battle axe before but sold it when I had two blink short swords made (I would have liked to keep the axe but I needed the coin for the certificates for the shorts). I don't think I'll ever sell them as they are incredible, but you never know. My ranger main uses them but my haste wizard who used to use the axe converted to TWC and OHE and uses two blink short sword when I hand them off to him.
