Armor Support 12/29/2010 03:37 PM CST
So I was idly testing weights today, and I noticed that armor support doesn't seem to follow its documentation.

From armor help support:
Reduces encumbrance by a number of pounds equal to 5 + ((Armor Group + 1) * Rank)

From armor info:
Skill name Mnemonic Ranks
Armor Support support 5

So, if plate is AG5, then that means support should reduce encumberance by 35 pounds. If it's AG4 (since I can't remember if the official AG is 1 off from the krakiipedia one), it'd be 30 pounds.

Testing with silvers, I found a difference of 25 pounds to pass the first encumberance threshold between support and no support.

I also tested with weapons from the Landing weapon shop, for a double-check. With scimitars weighing 5 lbs, short swords 4, and rapier's weighing 3, I found that
4 scimitars
2 swords
1 rapier
was the minimum weight (31 lbs) to encumber me without support. With support, it was
7 scimitars
4 swords
2 rapiers
was the minimum weight (57 lbs) with support to encumber me.
That's a difference of 26 lbs there. Assuming small fluctuation due to inexact item weights, that agrees with the value of 25 lbs found with silvers. All the weapons testing was done while holding no silvers.

Does anyone have an explanation for this discrepancy between the weight removed and the weight that's supposed to be removed?

Heh. But seriously, the numbers are off from the documentation. I bet no players have tested it since the release, is all. But I want my 10 pounds more!

Perhaps racial encumbrance modifiers are skewing your numbers

I don't see how it's possible for racial encumberance numbers to do that, as what I measured was the absolute difference imparted by support.

I am seeing the same sort of thing.

It gives me 22 lbs when it should be 29.

The only thing I can think of, just from those two examples, is that the implemented formula being used is:
5 + ((Armor Group - 1) * Rank)

Metadi:

5 + ((5 + 1) * 5 = 35 Theoretical
5 + ((5 - 1) * 5 = 25 Actual

and Rath assuming armor group 5 with rank 4.

5 + ((5 + 1) * 4 = 29 Theoretical
5 + ((5 - 1) * 4 = 21 Actual (which is close to his calculated 22)

Could be. The difference was actually one silver short of 22 lbs so 21 lbs plus some oddity in rounding somewhere is possible.

Someone should test it with leather rather than plate, and preferably a different race too to rule that out. Mine was indeed 4 ranks in plate and on a giant.

Dwarf in chain 1 rank. 1280 silvers = 8 lbs

Fits the - rather than + hypothesis.

COASE, is the documentation wrong or is there a bug in how much support is being given?

Did anyone see a final answer on this?

10 pounds is a big deal for the smaller races... and it's an easy question to answer: either documentation is correct, or implementation is correct.

We still haven't seen an answer on armor support.

Sorry, have to chime in on this one, if anything just to add to the growing list of people who would like an explanation. With 5 ranks in armor support, that's a lot of TPs being utilized for less than an applicable reward

I figured it was fixed, considering Im like one of 3 or so warriors in plat who can do armor support 5, and I get IM's all hours of the day from people asking me for it..lol.

More then 3 of us can do support 5, pluses and minus considered its the most useful in my eyes

Not really a safe assumption. The error lasted for months before I discovered it through careful testing. It was definitely off from the documentation, but not so significantly to make people go look at it.
