Sniping Rogue - Glass Cannon and Bandits 04/13/2022 01:44 PM CDT
Can something be done about this?

.

Suddenly, a carefully concealed net springs up from the ground, completely entangling you!

Roundtime: 3 sec.
A half-elven mugger suddenly leaps from his hiding place!
A half-krolvin bandit suddenly leaps from his hiding place!
A half-elven mugger suddenly leaps from his hiding place!
>weapon volley
...wait 2 seconds.
>
A half-elven mugger swings a bastard sword at you!
AS: +405 vs DS: +204 with AvD: +25 + d100 roll: +66 = +292
... and hits for 31 points of damage!
Solid blow gouges a chunk out of your left leg.
You are stunned for 1 rounds!

(insert them beating me to death)

.

My sniping rogue is level 90 and so I'm trying OTF which, while extremely dangerous, is doable. However, it has spellburst and so I basically don't have spells. This is the intention, right? Squares are so powerful that they need all the extra shenanigans to make the place dangerous? (nevermind my cleric never really worried about the place so this seems to just hurt squares)

I've tried doing bandits while utilizing my skillset of sneaking around, but they never spawn in that situation. Thus, I have to, as a rogue, with no spells, with 2.8x hiding at level 90, roam around in the open playing dumb.

Which leads to the above... btw, I also have 2.8x perception training.

Sooooo... how about letting bandits spawn on characters in hiding?

sneak east

You sneak east and spy bandit 1, bandit 2, and bandit 3 laying in waiting.

I find sneaking around behind someone else is extremely effective.

This is why I never hunt bandits solo. You summed up my solo experiences perfectly. Some were even worse than you quoted.

Hunting bandits with a buddy - now that is a great amount of fun. Not without risk, mind you, but certainly not guaranteed DEAD>

"I find sneaking around behind someone else is extremely effective." -- Rathboner

I completely agree. It's EXTREMELY effective. In fact, it makes me question why I'm putting myself through this grind of hunting my rogue solo instead of just going to MA with my cleric.

The unfortunate issue with partnering with others is I tend to play solo a lot (for several reasons, one of which is I don't have a strong circle of friends to hunt with, especially on my rogue who literally has no friends these days).

(Pronoun "you" used in the generic, "entire reading audience" sense, not "you, that person right there.")

.

This is a self-fulfilling prophecy, unless you're on only at depths of night (without others) in far reaches & climes (without others).

Nowadays, with Grimswarm & OSA & Reim & bandits, there are at least four areas available across the breadth of the game--okay, you have to transport to Reim--that will match to your level, so if you can find ANYONE else in the ENTIRE game at the same time as you at the same level, you could have critter-bait.

Ahem. I mean, "a hunting buddy." <cough>

[Ta'Faendryl Approach - 11813] (u17000018)
A cobblestone road swings in a wide arc northeast and west. Many of the stones are missing, but for the most part the road is still level and easily traveled. A huge mound of mud rises just to the southwest and extends to the west as far as the eye can see. The area is eerily quiet, as if no life of any kind resides here. A few dead trees, now petrified, rise into the sky in bleak silhouette, but the earth has a scorched look to it, and the usual underbrush seems to have retreated. You also see a twisted crystal-tipped staff and a shimmering portal.

The world before you dissolves into a grainy montage of color...

You find yourself wandering amidst endless streaming light and vast nothingness. This place feels torn between two powers, polar opposites vying for your loyalty. You are surrounded by the spirits of those who could not choose. The only way out seems to be through light or darkness.

Time has no meaning as you wander aimlessly amidst the uncomfortable tugging for your attention. Hopelessness washes over dreams you once held like the creeping tide of doom.

After what could be moments, or perhaps an eternity, the goddess Lorminstra finds you wandering in the endless space and speaks soothingly to you. She gently reassembles the pieces of your tattered soul and then, taking you by the hand, the goddess leads you back to mortality...

[Cottage Garden, Niche - 11972] (u17002337)
This small niche set into the wall at the furthest corner of the garden is neatly swept and obviously well tended. A mosaic pattern of flagstones surrounds a low granite altar placed in the center of the niche. Overhead, a white wooden trellis supports the trailing stems of a lush blossoming rose vine.

Re: OTF and Bigshot and AFK Scripting (long log) 04/18/2022 03:48 AM CDT
I HATE that both OTF and Ta'Illistim have become a zombie paradise. I make a point of trying to interact with everyone I come across and I get ZERO response. I have also given up reporting AFK and/or disruptive behaviour because I tend to play in the early hours (being in a different timezone) and I doubt it is even noticed. All the nodes are in lovely spots around town that are supposed to encourage people to gather and RP; they are all now bot spelling up places.

I really wish something would be done about it.

I don't believe this issue is limited to these areas of the game.

From the pitch of the vibration you determine that the purpose of the shield is as a shield.

Sadly, you’re right. All the more reason to do something about it.

Perhaps it’s time for a campaign to make our nodes places where roleplay can be found again instead of spell bots!

It can be a very frustrating experience to watch. One suggestion for the solo rogue is maybe to get the smallest OSA boat, and just solo on the water until cap or after. There are minor bandit-like surprises to manage, but not to the degree of traditional bandits. There is also no chance of overly BOTified interactions (at least in your own boat).

I did a lot of soul searching and decided that the joy of "doing it on his own power" is eclipsed by acquiring "the least amount of frustration as possible."

So back to the rogue tagging along with the cleric. I'll just have to test myself every now and then by going solo in a few places.

I CAN hunt OTF solo, and successfully.. but over the course of 10 levels I'm going to have a tremendous amount of frustrations and it's just going to make me miserable. So I have to resign myself to the "well, I did it a couple of times so I know it can be done.." knowledge.
