I think this is the stuff of dreams personally. People have been wishing for this for the last 20 years I’ve known them. I’m not saying everyone will use it or love it just there certainly is a market for this and it just makes the game more fun. I’m still not going to change from my profession but it’s nice to I can if I want. Many of my friends are already in the process and I couldn’t be more happy for them.

There has been a lot of talk about name changes over the years. Race change comes up rarely, and then usually in the context of encumbrance or other disparity in bonuses. Gender and profession change are not things I've seen requested here, as far as I can remember. I'm sure they've been asked before somewhere, though.
Outside the name changes, this feels like a workaround for a problem that doesn't exist yet -- perhaps "treading softly" around a bigger issue. Does it solve more problems than it creates? We'll see.

I find it interesting that it breaks immersion for some people to have characters change professions.
I know plenty of characters who are familiar faces to me in RP, yet I have no clue what profession they are because I don't hunt with them and they don't often openly talk about things that would give that information away. Honestly, I think that far more often than not, I'd never know someone's profession without getting it from PROFILE. A couple characters I know even try to cover up what profession they are or outright pass as a different profession, which is always fun.
And my own character Leafiara has been mistaken for a ranger because she used to help people with foraging bounties, mistaken for a paladin because she swings weapons in every non-Duskruin context that someone would ever see her in battle, mistaken for an empath just because some people often confuse them and clerics as they're always fogging about, and mistaken for a bard because most of her Tilamaire cleric spell messaging involves killing enemies with music and then I played into that even further with custom spell preps.
All that aside, even if it was still a concern, I think the characters who do talk openly and often about their profession and make it a large part of their RP are the ones who would either heavily RP out a change or are the least likely to make a change at all.

Generally I wait until I see someone casting a specific spell/using a specific ability--typically "on" [cleric, healer] or "for" [Enchanter, Sorcerer] me--before I set their profession highlight (I have a foreground/background combination for each profession).
Granted, spell-knowledge (and CMan-knowledge) items can now throw that off...
An exception is when there is a "do", such as looking at/profiling everyone on Xorus' ki-lin hunt. Then it's just useful to know who I'm with & what they're capable of.

Overall I’d rather have this change than not. I’ve rerolled too many lvl 30s because the name didn’t hold up not to be pleased.
Still, it makes me reflect…
1. It’s telling on the state of the economy that this isn’t being sold for silvers or given out with free fixskills/adv guild etc... If it’s not a problem for these to be a regular part of the game, then it would be good to have an in-world way to get them. It’s also a missed opportunity for a silver drain.
It’s obvious why that’s not how it was done, and as a practical matter they will be for sale in player shops soon enough, but it’s telling in a sad way.
2. The pay $$$ to fixrace/fixgender stuff I kind of worry will end up being be a pressure release for things that might have had other, better, solutions. But eh… I have a hard time caring. I think most of those controversies are overheated.
3. The fixprofession is really really really not like the other ones. The others are mostly role play tools with minor mechanical implications. Profession is one of the most radical mechanical gameplay changes imaginable. If it’s okay to do at all, gating it behind $200 feels icky. If it’s not okay, it feels even ickier.
I don’t really think the roleplaying implications are that profound, but I want to agree with those protests just because it feels like it should break something.
It’s such a paradigm shift with so many implications in a game that places a lot of weight on profession and grinding. I have a hard time wrapping my mind around it. It's weird to think how much time someone spends to get a capped character of profession X, and now anyone with any capped character can just switch over… instead of rolling another… instead of buying one… instead of a lot of things.
I think it makes the game very different. But not necessarily worse, just a different mechanical game.

<instead of buying one>
I have a suspicion this played a bigger role in the decision to release these then requests for them ever did. Like it or not, no company's gonna sit and watch characters/accounts be sold for hundreds or thousands of dollars without eventually finding some way to get as much of that as they can for themselves.

Name change is the key one. There's no point drawing a line that includes name change and excludes the others.
However having redrawn that line, what's next?
New race options. If I can polymorph into an elf, surely I can polymorph into an orc?
Custom races?
You see Saint Ardkor the Unraised. He appears to be a Ghost from Koargard.
Custom professions?
Bowelfister the stone giant magepriest of Illoke coming soon to a polymorph potion near you!

So what have you been doing when folks re-roll to a new profession after 2, 5, 10 or more years?
Kinda the same thing, minus the 2+ year re-level.
If you can RP a re-roll, you can RP a brain wash potion. Lookie there, just gave you your RP method.
I used to post on this board back in the 90s. Good to see the same whinging.

When you reroll your character in-game, you visit the RENAME pavilion. Suggesting that continue isn't whining. It might be 'whinging', I'm not sure.
Can you clarify it with the extra 20 plus years of maturity?

Manny Revilla (played by a really nice guy named... Manny Revilla) was notorious for playing every profession up to Lord/20th level. He just wanted to see what everything was like from that particular patch of grass.
Of course, we only had the eight professions then, so it wasn't quite the same as now.
Eventually he decided on Sorcerer, and stayed that way for many a year.

The point remains - if the potion is used to overcome the climb back - change the name.
I know none of this is popular. Some don't like the fact that it exists. Some don't like the fact that limits (that may become important) are being championed. I know several think they should just be able to take a character from any era and do whatever they damn well please.
I don't. That's the point.
Force a rename for anyone using the potion, please. It's a request - I have about as much probability of changing your mind as you do mine.

Hi, when this was first announced, I was pretty firmly against the name change specifically. Since then however, I had a bit of a reckoning on what drove my opinions (arguably colored by how beneficial it could be for myself too). I've taken the plunge started with changing one character's name and gender, and will do race once I've saved the coins for it.
Just like that, it breathed fresh air into a character I have long resented and kept in the shadows, because I didn't like the name.
THANK YOU staff, from the bottom of my heart. Polymorphing gave this character a new lease on life. I couldn't be happier with the decision. <3
Some lady softly says, "Naamit is over-rated."
You reply, speaking to the lady, "At least I have ratings."

This all has me thinking about future RP opportunities and story arcs for Rohese and I admit that I am somewhat excited. I do have a couple of hypothetical questions though that will help me consider the pros and cons.
If I were to change Roh's profession from cleric to ranger:
1. What happens to the custom spell preps? I assume those that apply to minor spiritual circle will continue to be accessible? Do those that relate to major spiritual circle and cleric stay listed but be locked off? Do they become available again should she revert back to cleric?
2. Can I assume that all signature verbs and unique titles etc. carry over?
3. I understand that alchemy would no longer be available as a ranger but should it ever arise that they gain access to guild skills in the future - more specifically, alchemy - would Roh have to start all over again? I suppose the same question would apply should she switch directly to sorcerer - would her alchemy ranks remain intact? What if she were to go cleric to ranger and back to cleric? Would she gain them back? I'm going to guess the answer is no and this would be a huge factor against any potential transfer.
Thanks!

Speak for yourself, but I rolled my sorcerer in uhh...1996? The game, and the profession, has changed radically since then. And let's be real - the secondary market for characters is immense, and I can't count the number of times I've tried to say hello to someone I was friends with, hunted with every week for months, only to have them draw a blank (what I mean by this is it wasn't them anymore). In this environment, having limited (i.e. expensive) profession/race change is pretty reasonable imo.

First off, I want to say a big THANK YOU for the name change option!!
I created my primary character something like 20+ years ago - just after the TRIP verb (not the CM) was first allowed to function with polearms - back when I was a moody teenager. I predictably grew out of that 'phase' I was in and pretty quickly came to resent the name I chose. Another factor for the dislike was that I was terrified I'd be disconnected by my parents picking up the phone (haha, modems) and that my then-pretty decent rolled stats (686 total, I believe) would disappear into the ether, so I kind of chose the name on the fly. I'd already spent several hours researching and experimenting with potential names, and finally just went with one I was only semi-happy with because I knew my parents would be waking up soon and they'd need the phone.
So, ever since then, I didn't feel quite right roleplaying with the name I'd chosen, and thus I generally shied away from organic RP, events, merchants, and even invasions and the like. This disinclination was magnified exponentially after new racial/profession documentation was released a couple years later that made me feel my character was even more sorely misnamed. I love the backstory I've developed over the years, and I've adapted somewhat to the new documentation...but the bad name still just stuck in my craw.
However I stuck with the character because of friends (who have since left), my accomplishments in my society and my guild, and because it was - by far - my highest level character (just over 80 now). I level very slowly and simply couldn't justify the thought of sinking that much time and effort into re-rolling just for a name.
I've taken extended breaks from GS, and each time I've come back I've hoped for this very change - and now it's actually here! I am literally giddy with excitement; I really can't express how happy this has made me. There were audible 'woohoos' uttered by me alone in my apartment this evening after I read the announcement post from October.
So, I am currently revitalizing my character's backstory and I am more excited than I ever have been to engage in RP and breathe brand new life into this character that's been a part of me for nearly half my life. Again, thank you.
However, before I take the plunge and quaff the potion, I do have a few questions:
1) Will my character's last name be affected as well? I'm rather ambivalent on that aspect, and though I'd be happy to keep that name if possible, I would like to be prepared with a new one if needed.
2) I have a potential alternative name on a level 0 character on a second account I've held on to for just this occasion. If I were to reroll that second account character with a different, new name, would said alternative name I've held on to then become available for my primary character? (Assuming no one snatches it up in the interim.)
3) Will the change have any notable affect on my primary character's guild, society, CHE, or anything else not mentioned in the original post?
4) Are there any other factors I should be aware of prior to changing the name?
Thanks in advance for replies and answers.

I used the rename potion with one of my secondary characters (and very gladly, given that I found the character was evolving beyond the constraints of the original name).
>1) Will my character's last name be affected as well? I'm rather ambivalent on that aspect, and though I'd be happy to keep that name if possible, I would like to be prepared with a new one if needed.
No, your character will retain the same surname.

If you reroll the character on the other account with the backup name, the name they previously had will then become available for use generally, which should translate to you being able to select it with the character you are trying to rename. I say should because I haven't actually tried this precise process, however I have used this in the past to have Character3 on AccountB free up their name for a character on AccountA.
>3) Will the change have any notable affect on my primary character's guild, society, CHE, or anything else not mentioned in the original post?
This should not impact any of those at all. I've heard of CHE membership being revoked, however Estild did say in Discord (and I think it's been shared here, too) that if you lose CHE membership, you can assist to have it re-instated. Or, if you don't want to wait that long, you could ask an officer of the CHE to reinduct you.

Would really love to see any NiR response to these questions, before the forums get taken down...

Late to answering this thread, as it's not one I keep an eye on.

Your character doesn't retire, so everything you have stays. The things listed on this page are everything that are impacted. Something like a custom spell message or a spell prep will be on your character, but you'll need that spell or that circle to be able to use it.

This all has me thinking about future RP opportunities and story arcs for Rohese and I admit that I am somewhat excited. I do have a couple of hypothetical questions though that will help me consider the pros and cons. |
If I were to change Roh's profession from cleric to ranger: |
Thanks! |
You will continue to have access to any custom spell preps and signature verbs. However, for the former, if you cannot cast those spells, you will not be able to use them unless you converted back or gained access to a Spell Knowledge enhancive to cast the spell. All guild training is removed and if you converted back, you would have to re-earn any lost ranks and status.

Quick question: If you change race, do you lose feature alterations? Tattoos? |
You do not.
