The what2hunt guide says rams teach till 70. Are you snap casting GZ? That seems to be the best way to train TM before chain lightning. You also might be on a postwall rank and learning plenty.
That said, after rams, I personally went to beisswurms. Not much cash, but great for defenses into the 80's. After that I hit sprites and fell in love with Ratha.
Two pieces of advice that I got back when I was starting out: 1. Base your hunting decisions not on TM learning but on defensive learning.
2. Focus on multi opponent above all else, and the rest will fall into place.
I've followed those pretty closely and things are working out quite well.

Note that the W2H Chart is based off of weapon caps, not TM caps, so that TM may cap at a different rank. I know that sandies cap TM at 100 ranks, but that they teach weapon skills to a different amount...
I would disagree on beisswurms, but that is because my experiences with them were... disappointing. They taught my character slower than sandies above the soft cap, even for skills I was in the sweet spot for with them; they either dribbled in or swarmed me to death; they don't teach skinning very well because they are too easy to skin, and their claws are just about the worst paying "treasure" in the game, while being heavier than lead.
I would really advise going to one of the grass eel-only areas, and just letting them swarm on you. They teach skinning fairly well, have higher value skins, and teach defenses high enough that you could probably move directly to sandies from grass eels.
That is assuming that your Evasion is in the same general area as your LC, around 45 ranks, and that your MO is also in the same general skill range.
Also, for the move to sandies, if you want to do your own boxes, you need to have at least 40 ranks in disarm and lockpick to start them, and you won't be able to quite do all of them at that skill level.
Also, IIRC, 60 in TM is almost certainly, for a "standard" WM, going to be the first post-wall rank, so it may not be filling, but still moving up at a fast clip.
Post-wall ranks for a "standard" WM: 4, 12,20, 28, 36, 44, 52, 60, 68, 76, etc. That is based off of the 4 "free" ranks for joining the guild, and the assumption that the first rank you need to earn (from either 0 or the free ranks) is a post-wall rank...

Just remembered the other reason I enjoyed beisswurms- they are right next to rock trolls, which can be used as a bridge critter between shaman and sprite boxes.

I'm still a little astounded that they have such high level creatures in an area with no access restrictions (climbing check, etc).

just because you are good at combat doesn't mean you are good at climb/swim.
i think this is good.

The fact remains that it's a high level creature right up next to a low level creature with absolutely no warning or skill check to pass through. There needs to be some sort of barrier.

There are hunting grounds without barriers, posting about this makes me think of Ratha's sewers as an example. Ratha folks gweth Ratha's rules or folks try to tell others the rules 1) don't go valve 2) don't go hatch
Having not been there since my mage was maybe 10th circle I cannot recall 100% and only survived about 3 seconds.. I think there is just a trail into s'lai screamers as well.
Makes me also think of one hunting ground that does have a barrier per se, geni. Barrier because it takes a crap load of perception to get in for the non-ranger and by the time most have that much I bet those geni are a joke.
Barrier beyond the critter, box level beyond the critter. But! there's a barrier

To this day, I still have "s'lai screamer" tagged with bright red letters on a green background and a loud, angry noise attached to it.

Yeah but take the word of someone whos char lives where they spawn, they used to be common now its a PITA to get them out of hiding.
Me, I'm happy they arent as vicious as they used to be, 3 or 4 of them on a circle 1 char is a lil much becuase lag caught them & made them pause 10 secs in a room. Even my homeowner isnt sad to see them gone though, the rock scuffing was insane.

This might be a bit late, but try bone wolves just south of Leth a few steps. Another non-armored critter like cougars and rams that teach better. I went down around 15th or 16th circle and stayed for 10 cirles. And you can always run up to nyads to get boxes if you want to work disarming.
