And, to further elaborate, casting an Electricity spell when in water results in the "blazing corona" that was seen.

You are correct, nothing (bolts) would have hit you if you were not at melee with something gettin hit.
You can alert your hunting companions to give them a moment to retreat and all should be safe from a cast in there.
