One possible armor enchantment would be to add a magical ablative layer which upon the armor being hit with sufficient force would be activated to absorb the excess force by using itself up with a possible added effect (maybe it would be 'magical air' that would activate by slowing down the impact and attempting to push back the attacker). Mend could restore this ablative layer.
