One tie in that might be fun would be linking to in-game expansions as well (e.g. road between ~Lang and Boar Clan area). Would need smithing items, stonecarving etc.

Few things. First, the islands need stables. There are none out there right now.
Secondly, plans to let us use player owned boats to transport goods? I think right now that caravans cannot get on them.
Thirdly, with smuggling and being able to hide stuff. What would be great is tinkering items that help hide stuff that could be added to caravans. Secret compartments and such.

Caravan stables could probably be arranged.

We'll see. Probably not immediately, but I'm not sure. You can still take public transportation, right?

even without new commodities out there, this is greatly needed. pretty much the only place you can take a caravan is the mainland cause there's no stables and alot of places have gates and stuff that caravans refuse to go through for no reason at all
this inhibits alot of movement

can we build boats? Or will there be merchant fleets? the public boats just won't do. we'd NEVER get the goods there on time if you have to wait for the times listed for those.

I could of swore that the rented from Riv to Lang you could not, but hey. This is good to know, but has anyone ever tried on the different ships to and between the islands? Should be same mechanics, but this is DR.

<< i'll reiterate that the kreg stables are broken
Unless I've misunderstood something, the stables on the islands are NOT broken. The stables there were never meant for regular caravans to be stabled. They were there for kregkeirals that Traders could use on the islands. This was a decision made long before I was on staff but I know a bit of why the 'kregs' were used on the islands instead of caravans.
While I won't go into all the reasons, one of them was that contract trading was never setup on the islands due to issues with being able to make it worthwhile. Travel time from the NPC ships was long and by the time you made it from one island to the next, you would definitely be clear and wanting. There was also the events around Trading and the islands that finally resolved with Imaar maneuvering back to the islands.
This is not to say that we won't have caravans on the islands at some point, though there will be a few 'adjustments' that need to be made behind the scenes to allow it.

the sign at the kreg stable says it will stable trader pack animals IN ADDITION to kregs
maybe this doesnt mean caravans, but in all other stables it does mean caravans.
Also, even if you do not own a caravan at all (returned), you cannot rent kregs. The kreg stable thinks you already have one somewhere. (this could be due to POC ownership conflicts)
These reasons are why i say its broken. Even disregarding storing caravan's in the kreg stab, the kreg's are unrentable.

In this sign, 'pack animal' is referring to the kregkeirels. This isn't me arguing, just explaining what was originally intended. No one should be able to stable a mule, yak or caravan here at all. A kregkeirel is a pack animal, it looks like a llama. If others find this sign confusing, I can change it but the term 'kregkeirel' was a bit different, so the sign was setup to mention pack animals so no one would think a kregkeirel was a wagon or something else.
You are correct in that if you own a POC, then you can't rent a kregkeirel. The reason is because you could store many items on your POC, then go to Aesry and store more on a kregkeirel as well. Allowing rental of both just isn't feasible. Once GM Socharis gets commodities closer to being ready, we'll decide what is to be done with kregs.

on the other hand, i probably do sound like i'm arguing, but i really don't mean to be.
but i do believe we might still be missing each other on one point.
>>You are correct in that if you own a POC, then you can't rent a kregkeirel.
what i was referring to was a situation where i did not currently have a poc out from rental, nor one in the stable. it was returned to the clerk, and to get it back i would have to rent it out from a trading outpost.
In order to return any type of caravan, poc or not, to the clerk at a trading outpost, you have to remove all the things from the box as the clerk will not accept the caravan returned if it has things inside of it. In this position you have 0 things stored on a caravan so by renting a kreg, you would not be adding to it, only changing the animal of which you store things in.
i just wanted to make sure i wasn't misunderstood

in my search for more tests, i tried to rent a standard pack animal, and found out the clerk wont even rent me that, and for a more specific reason : i own a poc.
the trading clerk's statement was much more specific and clear than the kreg stablemaster's statement.
anyways, i'm sure that i dont have to mention that i think that this is silly, but i see why you wouldn't consider it broken... its purposely coded that way i guess.

I'm not sure if mine is a POC or not, I don't have an interior room, only a bumper sticker on my caravan. I do not currently have it rented, i had returned it to the guild, and thus don't have anything stored.
I still tested this and could not rent a Kreg on Aesry, it tells me I have a caravan, while my ledger tells me i do not have a caravan rented.

No, not at all. You and everyone else has been very civil on the boards. I can see what you mean in regards to kregs and having a POC turned into a clerk. While I could correct this, it will take a bit. Some changes that are planned could be affected by my tinkering. It may also be an easier solution to just allow caravans in general on the islands soon. We'll do some discussions behind the scenes and see which sounds best. Originally, I had planned on all POC's needing to be stored in stables but changed my mind near the end to allow them to be returned to stables if the box was empty for everyone's convenience and to save you all a few coins. :)
<< I'm not sure if mine is a POC or not, I don't have an interior room, only a bumper sticker on my caravan.
Yeah, any caravan that has been customized in any way is a considered a POC. It is stored as a POC at that point and uses some other 'resources' at that point.
