This has happened to me more than once...

Caravan is leading from crossings to Arthe Dale. Outside the Northeast gate I tell Caravan to wait while I run back and take care of something I forgot. When I get back and tell the caravan to lead to Arthe, it backtracks through Crossings, goes across the bridge, then one more space west to Goodwhate Pike, then heads back east and goes to Arthe. Huh?
