Mixed armor value 05/06/2016 08:43 PM CDT
I've been using an OK 4-armor setup for about a year. I've recently started debating swapping it out for just a plain light armor suit.

Are the TDPs from the extra 3 armor skills really worth the extra hindrance? I mean, I know it's basically just free/ez-mode TDP, but are three skills worth it, assuming I won't ever do any PvP?

I was considering the same thing, and then I did the math. I immediately went and picked up a few offset pieces. I train all four armors now, which I've learned to do by swapping out accessories for minimal hindrance, or no accessories for stealth.

100 ranks is ~= 25 TDPs (75)
200 ranks is ~= 100 TDPs (300)
300 ranks is ~= 225 TDPs (675)
400 ranks is ~= 401 TDPs (1203)
500 ranks is ~= 626 TDPs (1878)
600 ranks is ~= 901 TDPs (2703)
700 ranks is ~= 1226 TDPs (3678)
800 ranks is ~= 1602 TDPs (4806)
900 ranks is ~= 2027 TDPs (6081)
1000 ranks is ~= 2502 TDPs (7506)

Put those numbers into here to see what that's worth to you (http://matoom.github.io/calculators/tdpcalc.html). While 1000 ranks in 4 armors is beyond the hope of most players, the extra three armors would be enough to take a single stat from 0 - 71. Looking at it as free TDPs basically makes it an always on stat buff that stacks with other spells and abilities, and perhaps will provide a stronger buff than what their own buffs could provide, especially for magic terts.

I use a silk hauberk, lumium chain helm, lumium plate mask, lumium scale gloves. All in the lightest templates to shave hindrance. Once you hit about 200 in armors it drops to 6 maneuver and I think 4 stealth. Can't log in right now to check.

I should probably look around and see if I can find something with less maneuver hindrance and more stealth, since we've got stealth boosters out the door.

Rather than look at how much you can raise a single stat, I would consider how much you can raise some number of stats that are 'at level' with your circle. So, say you have around 500 ranks in 1 armor, then you might have enough TDPs to have 65s in all stats. Having 3 more armors at 500 ranks would be worth another 10-12 points.

Some quick napkin math. Your armor will be roughly equal to your shield skill, which you're going to want to keep roughly in line with your secondaries. For estimates here, let's assume shield is 80% of primary weapon.

LevelRank Range for ArmorsBase Stats (guesstimate)TDPs from 3 armorsAdditional Stat Points *
205015*18+0.4
3510025*75+1.0
6020035300+2.8
10030048675+4.6
125400571203+7.0
153500771878+8.1 (-)
160600862703+10.4 (-)
169700913678+13.4 (-)

...

* To date, before racials, approximate, max gain based on assumed stats. Assumes an even spread rather than spending all TDPs on a single stat.
(-) = actually reduced since you've leveled all stats and the next slot costs a little more than the prior. I just didn't do the math on it.

So it's not game breaking, but it can be a significant number at the upper end. The value is increased or decreased based on how many other stats you train, whether you're training equally or pushing a specific stat, racials, and how closely you keep your terts to your secondaries/primaries. The circle curve is MUCH smaller if you try to keep your terts roughly equal to your primes, but I'm not sure how optimal that is for TDP generation below 150 anyway.

I would say of course its worth it, for me at least there is no issues hunting at level with all mixed armor. I think I had one point where I had to just go down to 2 armors, and that's because the character is F2P and it was a bit of a jump up. Even then I still locked all armors and then took the rest off.
