Another thing. components, based on the messaging and secrecy involved when selling the things... are highly illegal to have in ones possession. Hence, the guild that specializes in the art of the illegal should continue to do so <have sole access to "harvest">.

Although, once Changed by some source, they would be then brought into the "legal" realm.

My idea is 3-fold, and involves 3 guilds. Thieves <us>, Rangers, and Traders. Why traders? well, smuggling for one. For 2 they now have those handy storage-boxes on their caravan: perfect place for something that might not be the most legal thing in the world, but has to have something "done": processesed: in order to be completed. And can be closed <i.e. guard sees stuff in open storage box, guard arrests trader>.

It would work like this:

Thief gets box. Thief harvests box. Thief sells component to "Roger". <npc>

Roger does something to component. Roger then has a "box" of incomplete components that he will work out a deal with Trader Joe to smuggle to Dirge for him on his caravan. Trader Joe pays for the "box" of incomplete components. Trader Joe then takes the "box", sneaking out of "Rogers" shop so as not to alert any nearby town guards, puts the box in his storage box on his caravan, and takes it to Dirge.

In Dirge, the guy that buys the Stuff pays Trader Joe for the "box", and, as the trader is actually doing something illegal <smuggling> learns both trading and a very small amount of stealing.

Meanwhile, Ranger Ted is looking for something to build a leucro-trap. Ranger Ted goes to Dirge and buys a <now processed> Trap from the same guy that bought the stuff from the Trader.

Nor the ear filled with hearing.
That which hath been is that
which shall be,
And that which hath been done is that
which shall be done;
And there is nothing new under the sun.
