Hello,

I am new to the guild; fairly new to the game, and I would like some advice from seasoned adventures. I guess the best way to get the info is to ask: What are the top 5 things a new ranger should know/train?

FYI, my character is a dwarf ranger. His stubby fingers didn't do so well with bows so he has made the crossbow his main weapon. Also, he is not a fan of training magics, but he will train them privately, for the circles.

Honestly? This is going to be a huge, glaring, nasty, insane, handicap. Your spells are roughly 80% of your guild abilities, so you're going to be crippling yourself if you don't train magic. Add to that that you get TDPs (which translates to stat points, which are awesome) for magic ranks, and that magic is pretty easy to train, and that Rangers have a low circle requirement for magic, I'd strongly, strongly, caution you not to 'just train it to circle', and view it as a more positive resource that gives your character a lot of strength and bonus abilities.

What are the top 5 things a new ranger should know/train?

1) Train at least 3 weapons: 1 ranged, 1 thrown, 1 melee.
2) Train shield.
3) Train magics as hard as possible keep them at much at level as possible
4) Train mech lore for a little while.
5) Train evasion, stealth, perception all the time.

This is just my take. Some will agree, some won't. I get the RP behind the the non-magic using dwarf, but I'll tell you that if you don't get this up to par and up to level, you are really selling Ranger's short. Debilitation, augmentation and warding are a huge part of the game now. If you ever plan on any Character vs. Character combat, you'll need them or you'll get smoked.

Oh, train your Wisdom, Intel and Discipline.

I disagree; train 1 edge, 1 blunt, and 1 ranged. Ranged for a ranger is probably best to go for a bow, and then a stick-bow, because of dual load. Training a ranged and a thrown is sort of repetetive to me, unless you want to, and then it doesn't matter, do what you want. I personally train 5-6 things on most of my characters; usually 1 blunt, 1 edge, TM, a ranged (bow, xbow, sling, thrown), brawling, tactics, and a random extra one like poles or staves. The more time you spend in combat working weapons, the more time your defenses spend being really high mind states, which is good. You (obviously? I'm sorry if so) really, really, want higher defenses than weapons.

Now, more than ever, it's critically important to train your stamina, strength, and discipline, at the 1-20 circles.

Mentals are very important, for learning rates and spell contests, later. In the first 100 ranks every guild basically learns every skill at primary rates, and bonused rates besides, so it's really not going to help much to boost mentals before circle 30 or 40. But you do need the stamina to swing weapons, and the strength to heft burdens, and discipline generally speaking helps everything, especially hiding. And all three contribute to the vitality damage barrier mechanic in 3.0

Agree. Stealth is a really strong point for rangers, and you should train it. Perception, via hunt, boxes, foraging/collect, you should keep moving pretty good, and it's generally helpful.

I forgot he was completely new. The advice is really train everything to 30. Then worry about it. Whatever seems to be slowing you down the most train first.

If you are getting too tired, train stamina, if your stuff is too heavy, train strength, if you get smacked around maybe some reflex, if you can't hit with a bow try some agility, if you want to get a wolf, get your charisma up when you get there, etc.

Bottom line, everything to 30 is probably the best start.

I don't think thrown is redundant with bows; it's less redundant than a blade and a blunt, at least. Personally, I'd train all four. It's not much tougher for a weapons secondary to keep four weapons mind locked versus three.

Not every ranger uses AIM. I got tired of dying in game while I was on AIM. But if you see me in game, come hug me and ask questions. I'm always happy to help.

By the way, one of the most, if not the most informed about rangerly skills is Pfanston and he's also a mentor (folks dedicated to helping new and not so new folks in game). He usually is on in the evenings. Currently he hosts a ranger's meeting every Tuesday night at 9EDT. Last week it was by the Riverhaven ranger tent. Next week it will be in the Crossing ranger guild. Come and ask and just hang out and learn. It's all informal and OOC if you want it to be.

Welcome to the best guild in the game. And welcome to the best game on the web. Nothing beats imagination for creating cities, towns, critters, people.

Oh and training? You can follow the folk's advice of course, or go your own way. I think this guild has more folks who train the way they want to than any other. There is no one way to "win". In fact "winning" isn't goal of the game anyway.

By the way, some things we can do that hardly any new ranger knows so I'm passing on the info before they are forgotten:

--the ranger handshake...a sign of unity and comfort for those of the wilderness
--we have 2 mottoes Official "No ranger stands alone" Unofficial "Suck it up and carry on".
--While in the Crossing guild, find our library in the tree, read the note on another tree which tells why we make wolves (and by extension raccoons) companions (which are not pets). Oh yeah, TOUCH the chipmunk who is named Chippee. He loves to be touched.
--There is a back way into the Crossing ranger guild. Hint: go out the West gate and go trail...search around a few places.
--There is a way to go around Riverhaven and Crossing without having to enter those cities. You can run trails when you get enough learning (at first you will just have to listen to class). The easiest trails are outside Riverhaven.
--you can COLLECT things in a pile and learn outdoorsmanship. Everyone in the game makes piles differently. Look at the piles and see. It's sort of fun.
--After you get the beseech the sun to dry...you can forage corn and use the beseech to make popcorn! Also, you can carve hogs, snowbeasts, peccaries and such to use the beseech on and make jerky. Mmmmmm!
--Each of our guilds but Riverhaven's have a library. When you get a chance, read the books. Part of the great fun of this guild is it's history.
--When you get a tad older, Make it a point to visit all our guilds. The guild in Boar Clan is so awesome. When you visit it, go to every room and look around carefully. There are fun things like a changing statue and a way to find out if your bonus is good. There's a swimming slide and pool with a way out with great swimming skill. Outside the back is a tribute to our first rangers to reach 100th circle, a wonderful tree with treats to climb, a zip line, and well, other stuff to find and have fun with. The guild on the island Aesery has a wonderful heated pool. Just don't pet Marion's pet er companion cat. : P
--As a ranger, we tend to go to out of the way places. Where ever you go, keep your eyes open. You might find a love note, a sign with our motto on it, neat places to climb or swim. Always keep your eyes open.
--Know that every ranger welcomes you, whether they post or not. But also know that we have our surly and grumpy rangers as well as our huggy kissy rangers...those who don't like to fight and hunt and those who just love to brew a wonderful pot of tea (with the best picked tea leaves--we always find the best when we forage!).
--Oh yeah, don't be so concerned with getting the latest, "best" weapon and gear. Until you reach in the 100's in skills it doesn't much matter. And we have some rangers who have lived long and used only store (not trader) bought items. This isn't a game where you need the sword of doom. But those things will help you by being lighter than store bought and stronger than store bought.
--Most of all have fun...relax, and have fun!

My main advice is that DR is an amazing sandbox. I definitely love min/maxing other games but with DR I feel like I can try and fashion personalities and the "challenge" can be incorporated. Dwarf who hates magic and prefers tinkering with crossbows? Sounds awesome to me. Will it be tougher to level/might not you use every guild perk? Probably, but that's okay if that challenge makes the character more interesting for you.

This is a good point. I tend to look at character development from a years long cycle: I mean look at all the rangers grousing about TM. And min/max to a certain point just makes life easier. If someone told me they were going to 'never train evasion', I'd give them roughly the same advice. Not a good idea but blow yourself up.

That said, a magic hating, crossbow obsessed dwarf might fit thematically with other guilds and not lose so much guild ability. Thief or barb, for example, would do great there, and be very powerful. Thief would also maintain about the same concept as a ranger with ease.

^This was my first thought. If you want to be a Ranger with no magic, choose a thief as your guild, and then pretend to be a Ranger that hates magic. It would explain why you never cast spells, you would still be survival primary, and you'd already have a built in cover story.

My thoughts exactly... Thief for survival primary, or if the real focus was hatred of magic, then barbarian might be a good choice, but a ranger that doesn't train magic is really gonna be hamstrung right out of the chute.

Sound advice. But then I'm a plate wearing, magic disdaining Dwarven Ranger. Yes it presents challenges, particularly if you're more interested in the circles and numbers going up rather than the journey. Try it, if you don't like it you can always embrace magic and a different weapon or 5.

Wow, thanks for all of the great info and friendly replies. After this fine of a welcome from the ranger guild, in game and out, I couldn't think of changing guilds. I guess I will just have to be sneaky when I'm training "finger wagglin" for circles.

Neither here nor there, but DR forums aren't like most forums. People tend to read all of them.

I, personally, wouldn't consider playing a ranger with someone's rotten jawbone. Can't stand the guild.
