Thanks! Can you please check if the exp bonus is being properly applied to scouting? I pulse at the same rate whether I have the bonus on or not.

Big thank you for the changes to trails!

To other rangers: the 3 trails from my previous script don't teach at 240 but the trail between South Haven Ferry and Lang teaches both scouting and perception wonderfully.

Again many thanks for the fix, hack or otherwise.

Trails appear to be broken this morning. Last night I was able to move my scouting a bit but today it is staying at completely clear when running trails. I tried both the long trails from the gondola to the ferry and trails around Shard. PTS still appear to teach tiny bit. Haven't tried hunting. Scouting is a bit over 500.

Maybe the trails aren't set to the right difficulty? (Not sure if they have such a thing even)?

I was able to lock easily with 575 using the Haven-Lang, Lang-Rossmans trails, just one back-and-forth did it. Maybe try the Horse-Hib trail?

> Trails appear to be broken this morning.

There have been no changes since I pushed the code last night and verified it is working.

I verified that with well over 1000 ranks it is trainable on the longer trails in the game with a normal amount of time spent training.

If you are having problems learning after the changes, you most likely just need to find longer trails to run.

I am actively stomping all over bug reports.

If you find longer trails and it still isn't working, please BUG it in-game and post.

Otherwise, happy scouting.

Sithix,

First, THANK YOU! This goes a long way to making life easier!

Second, is there any chance we could get Stealth experience added to sneaking down trails? Since it's really stealthy, and such. Maybe half the rate of Scouting/Perception?

Thanks

You're not hiding from anything and there is no risk presented to you, so no.

Not unless I add some kind of random Ranger-killing trap along the trail that checks stealth.

Hmm, that gives me an idea...

So I just ran the two longest trails on Mriss. They are long enough that I pulse during the second trail. First trail, I get 1/34. Second trail 1/34 or 2/34, and then pulse to 0/34 before the end of the trail. This is not going to be sufficient.

These are two of the longest trails in the game, in terms of how long they take to run. I think there is still a good bit of room for adjustment. At least I hope there is, else running trails is still not a viable method to trail. 15-20 minutes to lock is not even possible when I cant get to 3/34, after 10 minutes.

I'd be all about this if there were options XD Like if the time for a regular trail was slightly extended but nearby there might be a trail that ran through ominous caverns or exposed terrain that subjected you to the terrors of Elanthia. The latter could be significantly shorter as a reward, plus teach stealth experience if you survived.

Look at trailmarker:
You see a simple X being engulfed by the maw of some hideous beast.

app trailmarker:
You are certain you could navigate this trailmarker blindfolded.
You are certain your attempts to blend into the surroundings on this trail would be as inconspicuous as a Gor'Tog at an olvi ball.

Not sure where'd the body go if you didn't make it, maybe wash-up by the trail's entrance after being digested.

Falker-

I'm with you, I think the with the variety trails on the mainland there are training levels for all level of Rangers.

You pop out to Aesry, Ratha, Mriss, Merkresh... I think we need to switch up the difficulty a bit.

To my knowledge there are two sets (going and back) on Aesry, and three on Ratha.

Because Aesry teaches from 100-500 maybe we could get the two sets to represent roughly that.

On Ratha you have from 50-700 ranks, maybe we could get the 3 sets adjusted there to represent that.

Right now, I believe all 5 of those sets teach the same.

I don't know about the other islands, someone with more knowledge could maybe request similar?

Depending on your skill, "two of the longest" may not be sufficient. The ones you are doing are not the longest in the game.

My latest test locked 1100 skill in 17 minutes using the two longest trails in the game (which are close to each other, and not in M'Riss).

I understand there aren't a lot of high-end trails all over the place, but that is not something I am prepared to look into at this time. This is more along the lines of break/fix than substantial additional content.

However, I'll try to catch you sometime and take a look.

In the meantime, you can mail DR-SITHIX@play.net your skill and the trails you are using.

If anybody else is still having major slowness, you may do the same.

By the way, I'll also be taking a look at HUNT and JUGGLE soon.

Feel free to post ideas in the appropriate forum WRT trails. Trails 2 will happen and, while trails cannot be a one-stop shop for survival skill training, it could certainly use a bit of attention. Stealth I can't say will or won't be trainable under Trails 2 or, if it is, how good or not-so-good that will be. In general, risk or challenge begets experience.

<<My latest test locked 1100 skill in 17 minutes using the two longest trails in the game (which are close to each other, and not in M'Riss).

I would say some of the longest trails are from

Pretty sure the hardest/longest are in P5. (P5 Past the ice road to Shard, I believe) Been a while since I was down there, though.

However the runners-up in terms of time would be

- Xing to the Haven ferry
- Galley to the penal colony on Mriss (the ones I tried on)
- Ain Ferry to Shard

Also, 1100 in scouting takes 17 minutes to lock, with what in mentals? Could make a good different if your test character has < 50 mentals.
I would make the case that if "two of the longest" needs to be "the two longest" to learn, the scale of trails needs to be wider. Something that narrow makes it next to untrainable, when people are forced to a small area like Mriss to train combats. I know you are trying to bandaid the skills, until it can be rewritten, which I think its safe to say is GREATLY appreciated from all rangers. However, with the new reqs (rather the lack of survival skill choices), I find myself actually needing scouting to circle. I wont be able to continue to circle if I cant learn it within a reasonable distance of the area I learn my other skills, and I know waiting for a rewrite is too far down the road for me.

I'm going to have to echo Falkonis' sentiments. I attempted to run the long M'riss trails a few times and wasn't able to move it past 2/34. I've headed back to the mainland and will try some of the longer trails to gauge.

What is the problem increasing Scouting experience from Hunt to what it was pre 3.0?

Re: Scouting Experience Fix - Trails 02/01/2013 11:18 PM CST
>HUNT

It doesn't directly relate to 3.0. XP was not changed. It's that you are seeing less population in giving hunting areas, etc. I will take a look at hunting sometime soon though.

>trails and P5

The longest aren't there either.

>trails and P4

There's one set (two trails) that is a lot longer now and will teach you higher ups. It is the one that was the longest in P4, and now it is much longer. Any other province and you can huff it to the longer ones that already exist fairly easily as compared to P4 folks.

Ok, I'm putting my best guess that the trail from Rossman's to fens and the trail from Haven ferry to fens are the longest. Am I close? Do I win a prize?

This is a really dumb question, and I should know the answer, but here goes.

Is M'riss and Kresh considered part of P4, and subsequently is that the really long trail that was made to teach really well, or am I missing the correct trail on Ratha and Aesry?

Diggan, the islands are considered part of P4 I believe. P5 is based around Hib. (I know there's a lot more to it.) At least that's the major city there. There's a link to a map on the front page of Dragonrealms.net.
I think the GM said the hardest trails are in P4 is wrong. P5 has the longest trails IMO.

The longest/hardest trails were not in P4 nor P5.

There is a trail set (two trails) in P4 which were recently changed to be as long as the previous longest set.

As to which two sets of trails that are now the longest in the game, PAFO and/or ask around.

I'm also looking at HUNT now.

By the way, please note:
1. This is a temp fix, but will probably be around for a while, as in months.
2. Perception experience on trails is subject to change when there are other non-combat ways to train perception.
3. HUNT experience for scouting will likely be low enough to incentivize trails over HUNT.
4. HUNT experience for perception will likely be decent but subject to change when there are other non-combat ways to train perception.

Wow I ran the 2 trails from Rossman's to fens back and forth and locked in 15 minutes! I'm so happy and thrilled. You can leave this fix permanently! Like others, I haven't trained scouting this well since trails were newly minted.

This is why I was asking about P4 - because it sure wasn't the ones on Ratha, at least it doesn't appear to be. But they are good enough.

It would appear that I average 1 mind state per minute.

I'm 99% certain the two other longest trail sets (other than the set in P4 that he just bumped up) are in P2. I think Sithix just confirmed it a few posts up, even:

DUNEPLAY:
>Ok, I'm putting my best guess that the trail from Rossman's to fens and the trail from Haven ferry to fens are the longest. Am I close? Do I win a prize?

SITHIX:
>Yes. You get to feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :P

The set from Rossman's <-> Fens and the Fens <-> Haven Ferry. They average about 4-5 minutes long and I get about 6-7 mindstates per run, with 575 ranks. Other than that, from my personal experience the other long one is in P3/P5 -- the trail from Horse Clan <-> Hib.

Yep. Ratha trails are decent enough that most Rangers out on Ratha will probably be okay, but a bit sub-optimal. The trails on Aesry are slightly below the Oshu level as well, but all and all, passable.

Thanks Sithix.
