I like the idea of shapeshifting as well. We could 'study' an animal (animal lore) and be able to shift to that animal, or take on the aspect of it.

Based on Han's comment, which I trust, apparently not enough so that low levels of stealing isn't a better option than capped foraging.

How did I know that ten seconds after he posted the word "Druid" in relation to our guild I would start hearing shapeshifting suggestions? :)
Of course it's absolutely not unprecidented, many of our spells already do shapeshift us to minor degrees. But he just posted the theory behind beseeches so those would not be good for helping us shapeshift, that makes no sense with what they're now defined as. It does, however, make sense with spells and just straight up abilities that we could take on some animal characteristics. Go into blood wolves to hunt, STUDY WOLF over the few weeks you're hunting there 1000 or so times, then tame the wolf and make him your companion, have the companion for a few weeks and finally you could have the option of spending a few TDPs and gaining the fangs of the wolf, or the incredible sense of smell, etc. Obviously a totally slapdash example, but if you were going the shapeshift route for more than just the duration of a spell that would be a neat way of going about it.
However all this stuff can be taken to all their proper folders and leave this thread here for discussion about the guild meeting and about magic changes/suggestions just for the people who didn't attend and want to read up here on what will and might be done. I'll be trying to find all my old beseech ideas and throw them out there in the proper folder sometime soon as well, but it sounds like that project is about as far off as companions at this point.

You're not going to find a solution using math. There's very little wiggle room between the effectiveness of stolen storebought versus the effectiveness of an empath.
The problem with foraging is a general one regarding substances and crafting as a whole: if it's not the only feasible route, then it's worthless.

Well they could make a dent in it by cutting all RTs in half and doubling/tripling EXP gain across the board. Even then it would STILL probably be the hardest skill in survival to train, but at least not as bad as it is now.
Then they can take their time making all the foraged herbs more potent or do more things at once or have more potential when made into potions/salves/elixirs or whatever.

This triggers a thought. Right now, once you hit, what 250 foraging, it's over?
I would not like to see the current herbs spread out over a 1000 skill range, but a second and third tier of herbs with greater potency that aren't available in stores might be a (partial) solution.
0-250 in foraging gets you base herbs that we all know and love. (fixed to include the currently unforagable)
250-500 contains the second tier herbs that can only be foraged for (not bought) and are better. (faster pulse? more healing? simple poison cures?)
500-750 contains the third tier. (regrow limbs? cure disease? purge poison? vitality loss prevention?) I'm thinking not straight-up FOR HERBX and it puts your hand back, but a slew of herbs that could be combined with alchemy to make potions/elixirst hat might. Those are highly desirable (profitable too).
Maybe you could throw in something useful for additional qualities of branches/limbs/sticks for fletching improvements. Less chance to miscarve? I'm stretching there.
Maybe lowered round times (down to 1 sec) for foraging/collecting simple-to-you stuff.
With Necros as survival prime, maybe it will end up on Z's list despite being a substance! I'm sure Necros could use some embalming herbs/potions or something. /ducks.

Can I ask where people are coming up with the 225-250 number for the endpoint of foraging? With just over 250, I'm only able to find cebi root with a very healthy WS cast and full bonus. Where are people finding cebi to make the claim of 225 or 250 being enough? Which brings me to my other point. I know Z was poking a bit of fun at having a foraging boost for a spell, but honestly, that aspect of WS was quite useful when Launtris was a younger ranger and wanted to find healing herbs and also until I find cebi root easily.

Based on every list I've seen, once you hit 250 there you can find everything that can currently be found. It might get a little easier as you move up, but unless I'm misreading, you won't be unlocking anything new from this point on.
A complete assumption on my part: gaining foraging skill gets progressively harder since there are fewer things that are a challenge to forage. I'm not there yet.
I completely agree with you that a foraging boost at lower levels is highly useful if you want to be self-sufficient and find healing herbs. If/when locating things scales all the way up I imagine it will remain useful/desirable. That was partially want I was brainstorming.

I've been foraging coins since 300 I think. I have 450, will be my 9th survival as soon as climbing finishes passing it (since climb is just so much insanely easier to lock assuming things to climb). At this point of my top 10 everything except FA and skinning is quicker to lock/move for me.

Fishing taught a lil when I tried it at 400 I think. But IMO coins moved it considerably quicker with less hassle (no need for pole, bait, body of water, etc). Only reason I gave it a shot was cuz someone said the scraping taught skinning.. which it didn't move my skinning at all at 370 at the time.

sorry for the double post, forgot to add
>>Because it's the only thing that teaches worth anything?
Because it's the only top end forageable that is easily found everywhere. I tried the next 10 or so things down the list from coins, and can't find them in any of the nearby places in p5. I wanted something I could forage careful with 11-14 second rt, but I'm stuck with coins which careful causes too huge a rt.
Though, did find out copperwood is here recently.
> forage copperwood stick careful
With incredibly nimble fingers and the knowledge of the wilds, you find the absolute best copperwood stick amongst the rest.
Roundtime: 24 sec.
R> forage coin careful
You manage to find a tarnished Imperial coin.
Roundtime: 31 sec.

My comment about 100 stealing >> than 2000 foraging was strictly in regard to the fact that one cay buy/steal every herb but you can not forage every herb. But as Zeyurn said, he's not touching substances, so no real point in pushing the matter here.
I'm thrilled our spells are getting a lookin' at, I use spells far more than foraging and herbs, so on priority lists, I think Z's got the order right.

Guild Meeting - December 17th
12/05/2010 11:26 PM CST
Greetings,
Would there be any way the time or preferably date of this meeting might get changed? The mentors are holding an event that evening starting at the same time. At least 4-5 of the 7 mentors that are rangers have committed to the mentor event. Besides me, there are Hanryu, Pfanston, Gridaksma, Tsarenzi, Xelten, and Aroamer on the mentor roster. I know I wouldn't be the only one that would be grateful.

We could move it to 10 EST without too much trouble, would that help at all?
The issue is timing, GM Sithix has a complicated schedule that makes evening scheduling tough and I work days, so that is the only day between the two of us we could be there until possibly after the new year.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.
