Tracking companions 01/19/2013 09:29 PM CST
So I was looking through the in-game magic documentation in 3.0 and stumbled across something exciting under FOCUS HELP.
FOCUS COMPANION - Connect with an active Ranger companion to discern minor information and status.

It doesn't work with the current ones, from what I can tell.. but it reminded me how close we must be getting to having new ranger companions!

So I was trying to track someone down with my wolf the other day.. I told him to find the person and wait, then I started wandering the lands trying to find a point I could start tracking them at.. and I was thinking, it would be awesome if there was a way I could determine the general direction my wolf is in, based on zones like befriend find uses.

No idea what the syntax would be.. Maybe FOCUS COMPANION would already show something like that..
If they are still en-route to finding the person, it will let you know it is travelling.
If they are out in the open somewhere, it will let you know your wolf is somewhere very close, northeast of you, whatever..

Not sure if that would be considered overpowered or anything.. Just thought it would be really useful.

Uh, whoops!

>something exciting under FOCUS HELP

That was unintentional and part of something old that I didn't quite catch before now.

It has been removed.

>how close we must be getting to having new ranger companions

Based on my above comment you can probably ascertain that this should not be interpreted as to how close we might be.

The good news is DR3's release does allow us to move on to other things fairly soon after subsequent monitoring and bug-stomping / tweaks are out of the way.

Sorry for any confusion!

So glad to hear from Sithix,

Glad to hear from you, keep up all the great stuff you do. Stay in the shadows for a while if you don't want to hang out.

And Thanks for all the work your doing on all those various systems.

Zombie! Kill it!

You're going to get a bad reputation if you go around pinching every spectral reaper you see.

Always been here actually. Just no time to stay up on the forums. I think putting what is now 25% of my time in reading mostly rehashed stuff here vs spending that on development is not the preferred option. But I have spies everywhere so it's all good. :P

Yes, but are they wearing green? That's the ticket to blending in with those woodland types.

SITHIX! YOU'RE ALIVE! ::sends her raccoon to sniff Sithix out and give him raccoon "kisses"::

Hey folks, now that he's back, wanna share your ideas about companions? I mean it's been 10 years, and we have already said a lot, but there are always new folks who read and might even have an original idea.

If they do post, please don't run down their comments if it has been thought of before--unless you have an eidetic memory, we could use some memory refreshing.

Sithix, I don't expect you to read these except as you can (frankly, I'm surprised you GMs can see anything, after DR3). But hey, we might think of an original idea.
