Parry question 06/26/2012 01:57 PM CDT
So I raise up a ton of toons. I'm having a sort of unique problem with my paladin (for me anyway).

I'm used to parry being miserable to train at sub 30 ranks, but normally I'm using some decent weapons so it works ok. Now, I'm not sure if it's the plate (half plate) nuking evasion more than I'm used to, or the fact that I'm going for more of a concept build, using pike, 2he, ht, brawling, and HB for a blunt (concept is more of a spear specialist). But man, past rats I'm just getting slaughtered trying to learn parry. Had to resort to classes to learn it.

Is this going to disappear a bit as he gets more ranks, or should I swap my weapon choices around to have a more balanced parry option? Or should I just get a blasted parry stick.

Not a paladin expert, but my guess is that it's a combination of hindrance from plate, that all those weapons are bad for parry except maybe 2HE which has low balance which is still bad for parry, and that parry just plain sucks to train below 150 ranks.

I wouldn't say change anything, just suck it up and work through it because it will get better eventually.

Well atleast until magic 3.0, once you get the holy warrior spell, parry is tremendously easy to train. My stance is set at 100% evasion, 51% parry, and 100% shield. At low level it might be a touch slower, but it makes training all three defenses very easy.

Just work yourself to a point that you can dance with 4 of what you fight, and start slowly shifting points away from evasion to parry. Start with like 5-6% in parry and continue on. Appraise what you're fighting(with 4 on you) as you continue to shift. You'll want to be defensively between slightly less skilled(beware the higher end of sls) and less skilled, IMO. If you hunt with defense buffs, you should be alright at worthy(watch your combos too - find your range).

Once parry really starts to roll(it'll probably trickle at first), continue shifting points to it from Evasion. As you are able to handle your battles better and better, keep tuning down Evasion. You'll eventually arrive at a point where everything locks with little effort.

You are currently using 46% of your evasion skill.
You are currently using 100% of your shield block skill.
You are currently using 46% of your weapon parry skill.
You are attacking with 100% of your offensive skill.

I still lock all 3 defenses in Juvies, np(1095 Parry, highest). If I wasn't using Whirlwind, I'd take Evasion to maybe 35% and stick those extra points in Parry.

It definitely gets better. Weapon choices are kind of tough but I found it exceptionally hard to train early on even with HE. One thing that will help immensely is sentinel's resolve. Get that when you can. I think the last critter I remember really, really struggling against with parry was probably either black leucs or baby gryphons. So somewhere in the 200-300 rank vicinity. So courage/ease for burden, sentinel's resolve for defenses all should help a lot.

Actually, it might have been my overhunting a bit. I stepped down from eels (who were teaching everything amazing but were too hard to learn parry on) to badgers and Pots, and can work all my weapons and parry and defenses there without getting eaten. Give it a few more ranks and I'll probably be good to go.

Is it ok to ask about spell progression in this thread so I don't have to open a second one? Not like Paladins have a metric ton of spells, and it seems like I should aim for DA asap, then Sentinel Resolve? Already picked up halt and courage.

Courage, Righteous Wrath, Divine Armor, Anti Stun, Holy Warrior and Rutilor's Edge.

Those are your first spells. Get them in whatever order you want. Although, I would recommend getting to HOW as quickly as possible (it is the best paladin spell).

If you PvP a ton, grab Stun Foe (name still makes me mad) in there somewhere.

While I absolutely agree that HOW is amazing (and makes defenses training amazing), I would be a bit cautious with getting HOW too soon. Being a 3rd tier spell makes it rather difficult to pull off and I was training my magics a lot. One sad thing about it is that it already has a low duration so be prepared to have to cast this frequently when you can barely put mana into it. If you train up the magics and can cast it will become a favorite of yours.
