Rebuke 10/14/2014 09:18 AM CDT
I still don't quite grasp the ranges for spell tiers. Rebuke is listed as an advanced spell. What range of TM am I likely to be able to start using it? I think during preview I was able to cast it a few times, but not regularly. And I don't remember what the skill levels on my paladin looked like at the time. He doesn't get much play time so they very well could be the same ranks.

It varies from spell to spell, although most spells in the same tier will be in the same ballpark. Advanced spells are typically 50-100 unadjusted ranks for minimum skill needed. For your specific spell, it should say in the DISCERN as an exp-rp version of the minimum skill needed. Then knock off a few ranks because of your primary magic bonus and that should give you an idea. Elanthipedia says it is 80 ranks in the case of Rebuke, assuming it is correct, so I would guess around 70 ranks with your primary magic bonus.

E.g.
> discern burn
The Burn spell concentrates an intense beam of light or shadows on its target, scorching it or setting it on fire. Even the power of Katamba (Def1) can be focused into burning the target severely, but only when it is the only available source of luminescence.

This is a targeted spell, which must be TARGETed at a specific opponent. This spell does fire and puncture damage. It can be cast at other adventurers and at hostile creatures. It requires a minimum of ten mana streams, and can expand to a maximum of one hundred mana streams woven into it. To begin to be able to cast this spell, you will need to reach the rank of a beginning practitioner. By the time you have mastered this spell, you will be ranked as a master in your abilities as a caster. It requires the Targeted Magic skill to cast effectively. Before you can learn this spell, you must know Focus Moonbeam. Additionally, you must know one of Dazzle or Dinazen Olkar. It will also cost two spell slots.

You think you could weave at most 32 mana streams into this spell.
Roundtime: 8 sec.

So for Burn, it requires a minimum of 50 ranks modified by primary magic so probably around 40 ranks or so.

P.S. The personal cap mana number in the last line is a lie. It is almost always higher by a significant margin due to not including your primary magic bonus. Right now I have to add about 15 mana to whatever I see to get my personal cap. Also, if that line is telling you that you can't cast the spell, it might be possible that you actually can taking into account your primary magic bonus.

I wouldn't have posted if I'd see that bit. Probably should have paid closer attention to the actual information.

Eventually, the spell summary chart template will use the actual rank ranges and not the more general descriptions of introductory, basic, advanced, and esoteric.

Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall rank!
