Re: New Paladin Q's 01/15/2010 11:28 AM CST
1. Soulstones. Are tortured souls still the only source of these, outside of a shop? If not, what shops sell soulstone items?

Yup.

2. Spells. Are there any must-have spells that I should work towards off the bat? I chose Courage and AS for my first two, not clear what I'm going to do next. I plan on using TM heavily.

I'll let a few of the elder paladins field this!

3. Any other tips re: caring for and raising my Paladin?

Be careful not to learn stealing any way whatsoever: That will give you a massive soul hit. Also, don't attack from hiding for the same reason.

Good luck!

1. Correct. Tortured souls or fest item only.

2. I always have a hard time giving advance for picking spells at lower levels (been a while since I was a young paladin). I would suggest SR, RW, AS, Courage, DA. Stun foe if you go for the str/stam paladin or Halt/DiG for the mentals paladin. Nice to have one of these disabler. I would go for SF just because of no exp penalty for weapons. Definitly get STRA for TM.

3. Train as many things as you encumbrance can handle. ie. all armors and many weapons.

You can always ask me a question over on AIM Gent @ Murphster06. I believe you may even have that already.

If you want a free mobile soulstone you'll have to grind Tortured souls for hours or days. If you don't care about it being mobile you can use the arches in the guilds. I know Crossing and Shard have one, not sure about the others though. The crossing Paladin shop sells fancy soulstones.

Wear sunscreen.

1.) As others have said, yes tortured souls are the primary source for soulstones you can carry with you. The drop rate has increased x3 than in years past if I remember correctly.

2.) I didn't go the TM route, so can't advise you there. My personal staple spells are Courage, Holy Warrior, Divine Armor, Righteous Wrath and Heroic Strength. Many people keep Sentinel's Resolve up also.

>>3.) Train as many things as you encumbrance can handle. ie. all armors and many weapons.
Wonderful suggestion from Adakin. I didn't get this advice when I was younger and I paid for it. The biggest thing to remember though is train how YOU want to train, there is no right or wrong way. Personally I train 7 weapons and 4 armors + shield.

When hunting, utilize the hunt verb to train perception and appraise critters to learn appraisal. This will help learn other skills in combat as well as keep you dancing to learn defenses. Climbing and swimming are wonderful skills to learn to help you get around quicker.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

I just looked on Elanthipedia and maybe I was mistaken, I thought I remembered seeing some in there. If there's not there should be. They sell Chakrel in the barb shop. So I don't see why they couldn't sell soulstones in the paladin shop.

<<SR, RW, AS, Courage, DA. Stun foe

Yes.

<<Halt/DiG

You already need halt. I can't think of a good use for DiG at lower levels.

<<Definitly get STRA for TM.

IMHO, you do not need STRA, or FST. 0-160 with bolt (so far), and you won't have to regret choosing spells you just want to get rid of. Besides, you need 100 Arcana + a good CJ to learn from a scroll. No use burning a spell slot on TM when you get one that works for free.

As far as TM goes, stick with BOLT. Similar to PRAXIS, I've shown no signs of having trouble training TM with it so far. Don't bother trying to kill anything with it, I just spam: prep bolt;face next;target;cast.

Where other spells are concerned, the ones I find most useful by far at this point (30th circle presently) are DA, Halt, AS and HOW. I'm also a fan of a SR/RW combo. If I find myself taking some hits training defenses (ie. when I start working my parry) I cast SR on myself and all the critters engaged to me. Works like a charm, and if it decreases learning it's been negligible so far.

At least up to the point I've reached, I've seen no reason to pick up DiG. I suppose if you've chosen a race with bad mental stats and played to their strengths/weaknesses it might be useful, but it's probably something better for later on.

I have HES mostly for magic training, and it's excellent at that, and depending on where my stats are at it can shave a little off my RTs.

DiG helped me over-hunt on haltable creatures. I was going into raiders wayyy before I was supposed to.

I agree to your comments for TM. I'm too used to having open spell slots. Though when you are able to invoke the scroll, I would do so often. A nice extra way to learn schol/md at a very good rate and store purchasable so you can repeat often.

Not arguing or anything, but Orcs are just really, really dumb. Really dumb as in, during a recent event my (then 29th) Paladin with 24 cha/21 dis/18 int/18 wis was able to successfully halt a clan-chief with a 5 mana prep Halt.

I was shocked, but it was awesome.

Train both a ranged/thrown and melee weapon. Many find Thrown preferable due to all the restrictions and penalties tied in with shield usage and ranged weapons.

Brawling is always blessed for Paladins(If your soul is pristine)... and is a very good weapon class for heavily gauntleted warriors... You can also learn brawling without killing things so its a great weapon to train while learning defenses.

It is a great boon to learn targeted magic beacuse it helps in defense against targeted spells... but keep in mind that being a magic tert guild means slower mana recovery and tert speed learning. Make sure you work Power Percieve hard... this will help A LOT with magic usage.

Welcome to the Guild... and remember, rightousness faith and honor mean differant things to differant people... A Paladin must also have Understanding of that... and considerance for others beliefs...

As a Paladin, you will be tested and judged by the Gods...

Let them find you worthy, and enjoy all the benefits that come with it.

How does TM help defend against TM? Or, am I missing what you are saying?

Being that when I leveled the spells and the spell selection were much more limited. I'll say Courage and AS are good addition. If you are more offensively minded go with RW as well.

My overall suggestion for you is that if you are not in a HUGE rush to level. Over train non-combats to get excess tdps to help you in combat e.g. reflex/agi/stam. A bit more work now will help you later on and give you more choices on what to pick.

I am fairly sure that Targeted ranks are used in calculating defense against targeted spells...

I recall a GM stating this when analogous spellls went live... I think it was the only reason I considered training Targeted.

I am not completely certain however...

As far as I know, you either:

1. Resist a spell.
2. Dodge a spell.
3. Block a spell.
4. Or, die.

Those are the four options vs. spell casting.

P.S. I exaggerate on #4, but you get the point.

You forget absorb a spell... it doesn't happen often(small range in which it occurs)... but is possible.

In all of those you listed... there are multiple skills/stats used in the calculations for success/failure. One of those I b elieve is Targeted magic... thus my earlier statement alluding to its worthiness for defensive situations.

TM does not assist in defending against TM.

However, it is possible to armor absorb a spell.
