I find the best thing to do.. is find a creature you can kill quickly that swarms and is skinnable.. and just slaughter them as quick as possible and forget fully arranging until your thanatology is moving. Early on grass eels worked wonders for me. they constantly swarmed and you could just kill them over and over and preserve, skin, search, rinse and repeat. I found it locked both skinning and thanatology pretty well.
