OBSERVE Experience and Telescope Usefulness 06/05/2020 08:54 PM CDT
I've just rolled two updates to Prime and Plat:
1) Experience for OBSERVE (or PEER TELESCOPE) has been increased. This is to help keep the skills moving during the fairly long timer on observing.
2) The amount of prediction pool bonus a telescope gives has been increased.
-- This used to be a random chance based on the quality, and the amount was a small flat amount. It now always bonuses, and the amount is based on the quality of the telescope.

Not sure this is working, here's my data:

body - magic pred. pool change - telescope name
durgaulda - no->weak - weer crystal telescope
durgaulda - no->weak - lustrous purpleheart telescope case banded with silver filigree
durgaulda - no->weak - basic silverwillow telescope (Konezu's Lenses)
durgaulda - no->weak - simple satinwood telescope (Konezu's Lenses)
durgaulda - no->weak - well-crafted elaborate gold telescope with small dents along its casing

I can't find the first one, but the second two are identical. One of yours is out of focus, though, and that will negatively impact you. The post in question seems very lore-ish, and not a mechanical statement. That is not the best telescope in Elanthia, it's of lesser quality than the two you have.

There's still a random element, and weak is a range (I'm assuming this is from PREDICT STATE). This looks like a total of three data points, which is not significant.

If you want to actually collect data on the change, you'd need to fill a pool multiple times with each telescope and record the number of times it takes to fill your pool (or when certain a threshold is passed). Then do the same thing in Test (where this code hasn't been deployed).

The last telescope is a 24/7 telescope and it's such low quality that you don't even have the option to focus it iirc. You're saying it's identical quality as MT endloot? Guess I'll wait for the appraise update but something seems off here.

The Weer telescope (first telescope he posted) is the stationary telescope in the Crossing MM guild and according to past forum posts the highest quality telescope ingame in 2008.

Sorry, his second post only had three. The first one is a 24/7 telescope, the second two appear to be from paid events (either HE or MT). Those are the three I checked.

As far as I know, you can't focus 24/7 telescopes, and they don't go out of focus.

Like I said, that reads as a lore post. I seriously doubt that was the best telescope in 2008, but I wasn't on staff. We've certainly released better telescopes since then.

Thanks for the response,

As far as focus, I had to focus all of them except the "well-crafted elaborate gold telescope with small dents along its casing".

I am not sure if that's focusable, but that's the one a thief can steal from the museum.

24/7 telescopes from Konezu's lenses in Theren can be focused. B&E telescopes cannot be focused. According to Armifer and Raesh in 2010 and 2011, a telescope that can't be focused is the lowest quality.

You can now STUDY a telescope for general use info, as well as quality, and instructions if it needs focused.

I grabbed one out of the B&E bin and was able to focus it. It must be opened to focus it. I looked at the code, and the only telescopes I see that can't be focused are stationary.

Thanks for getting that study command out so fast and making it usable for Non-Moon Mages too!

Thanks, that's super helpful. Do you think this telescope is bugged then? It's from the museum:

> tap tele
You tap a well-crafted elaborate gold telescope with small dents along its casing that you are holding.
> study tele
You believe you could CENTER a well-crafted elaborate gold telescope with small dents along its casing
on a heavenly body, and then PEER through it.
It should be handled with the utmost care, or it risks being broken.
You believe this telescope is finely made.
A well-crafted elaborate gold telescope with small dents along its casing appears to be out of focus.
You believe you could attempt to FOCUS it to correct the issue.
> focus tele
You twist at your telescope, but nothing much seems to happen.
> center tele on kat
You put your eye to the gold telescope and attempt to center on the black moon Katamba.
> focus tele
You twist at your telescope, but nothing much seems to happen.

No, it's not bugged. Not all telescopes can be OPENed and CLOSEd, but that is not linked to its quality.

So we went and studied all of the fixed telescopes and it appears that all of them are poorly made or worse.
