So, Simutronics has a sweet event on the West Coast and Mid-West, but what about us East Coasters (East Siiiiiiide!). They should have one, oh, say, for instance, no particular reason why, not because I live there, in Delaware -- they could call it "DelaCon" or something similiarly exciting... it would offer such features as:

o 30 minute drive from Philadelphia Airport.
o Tax-Free Shopping.
o 15 minutes from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland.
o Wonderful view of the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

Ermm... Oh well, I'll always have my dreams.

Yep -- the DuPonts made sure of that back in the 1800's. ;) On of the only states in the union I know of where there's no sales tax on anything.

Don't feel too bad, when I left Long Island several years back, they were up to 8.5%. ;p

Clarksville, TN is up to 8.5% non food tax, and 9.5% on food... Needless to say I shop on the military post.

Looks like Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon are all sales-tax free states, although some cities within those states are allowed to charge their own sales-tax. Though most don't, a few in Alaska charge 5%.

At least we make up for it with the highest property taxes in the country. :(

Yeah, that's one thing I will enjoy about moving.

Though, no state income tax is pretty nice.

Well,
I doubt moving to San Jose is going to be a big expense reducer overall but there are other advantages

Sales tax in Alaska - Anchorage - none. Palmer/Wasilla 3% only up to $500 - After that none. Don't know about Fairbanks or Juneau or any of the other smaller cities/villages. Plus no state tax and the permanent fund dividend every year.

Depends if you rent or own -- definitely try to get an idea, primarily of the property taxes of the area you're moving to and how it compares to where you are now. If you rent, it's not really an issue.

I would think it's more a consideration when retiring. If you plan on retiring on investment income, social security, 401(k), pensions you may want to move to a state that treats that kind of income favorably. That's why folks retire to Nevada, Texas, Florida, and Washington State, no state income tax on those retirement incomes/dividends.

Let's say you were one of those lucky dot com stock options people. You relocate to WA/NV/FL/TX and change your residency prior to exercising your options. So that 5%-10% of those millions of bucks you made doesn't go to CA state coffers.

You could live in the best of both worlds, move and work in Washington state just north of the Columbia river and don't get state income tax and then cross the river into Portland, OR for shopping and not pay sales tax.

True, but at least state income tax is deductible from federal taxes. State sales tax is not (until this year).

It's a trade off really. In states with no state income tax, they typically have higher property taxes, which are tax deductible.

Actually, a good chunk of dead people get refunds. And if they've done thier will correctly, the heirs don't have to pay exorbitant taxes, either.

I'd drive to Wilmington for Delacon :p. But, nothing around the DMB is scenic, lets get that cleared up right now.

As for your tax/car rants. NJ here, highest car ins in country, #2 for avg cost of living (states), low sales tax, moderate income tax, brutal property taxes. But, some of the best gov't services in the country, top 3 in most education categories, top 3 in most household wealth categories, #2 most strictly enforced environmental laws in the country, so get bent!

Think taxes are wrong? Move to Mississippi. But you'll barely have a salary to be taxed and I dare you to get laid off and survive it.

Philosophical (progressive) discussion (rant) complete (paused), should (will) never (soon) happen again.

VegasCon was pretty cool.. I made it to the cleric meeting, but I didn't get to spend as much time as the Con as I wanted to. If you were serious about an East Coast con, I'd attend.. don't really care about location.

As for taxation, I'm more or less a socialist.. so hey, I'll shell out an extra couple pennies out of every dollar I make to help out the homeless, or the mentally ill, or some other horribly neglected social reform structure. I live in Virginia.. 12th wealthiest state in the nation, and.. 48th lowest income taxes? Maybe it's not income tax. I'm too lazy to look it up. Either way, I think we could afford to shell out a couple more pennies for the less fortunate.. or perhaps fix the debt instead of letting our government spend listlessly into debt until we're forced to privatize social security and thus turn retirement into a robber baron society. HOORAY! I want to be a pirate when I grow up!

Wish I could have gone... I was supposed to have, but the choice came down to Vegascon or new house. (And after three months of weekend demolition and remodeling, I think the house will be worth it when it's done.)
