Raffle Violin Question 11/06/2013 09:47 PM CST
So either last night or early this morning, Xixist won a beautiful Violin in one of the Festival Actions.

a gloomwood violin with an elaborate witchclaw fret

> look my violin
Beautiful scrollwork has been etched into the sides of the fret. The violin remains otherwise unadorned except for a lustrous sheen on the purple-tinged wood.

There was a nice recall on it and everything. Lovely quality. Really, just a beautiful instrument.

Then I realized it mentions a fret. So I'm here asking what part of a violin this might actually be referring to. I've never heard of a fret on a violin in all these years. Does anyone know?

Thanks!

Is it accurate? Sort of. Ultimately it's not going to affect the playability of the instrument.

The owner is free to have that corrected via an alteration if it bothers them

As an aside, some violins do have frets.

Apparently there's fretting over frets or no frets.

And 20 minutes ago I didn't even know what a fret WAS.

Isn't learning FUN?

I learned more about playing the triangle this year than I ever knew. My only experience with this instrument was tangalanging it in grade school. Who knew it was more complex than that? :)

Not only did I have to look up fret but

<<My only experience with this instrument was tangalanging it in grade school.

"tangalanging," really Evike? You're just making up words now. Next you'll want me to learn history about these instruments

<<Instrument Recalls and you. - Now that the fest is out in Prime, I hope some of you have noticed some added and in some cases, updated recalls to instruments that were released previously but never had a recall.

Aw here goes. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtRCqxpyxnY)

Oh, the violin plays well, there is no problem there.

I just thought someone might know of some other kind of single fret that was some part of a violin. "Beautiful scrollwork has been etched into the sides of the fret." Maybe it is a localized term. I know a couple luthiers, I will have to ask.

Frets, plural, I'd never have asked about.
