Re: Power Perception 12/22/2006 01:43 PM CST
...But I like the Bard power levels. They're much more sensible.

You don't need to decipher musical muck. You're really only looking for one word just like other mana levels.

e.g.

You hear a soft, elusive (vague)

You hear a gentle (hazy)

You hear a piping (dimly flickering).

I don't know what FE you use, but you could adjust your toggles to highlight those words and it would become really easy. Honestly, how often are you ever going to see something more powerful then 'glowing' or 'shining' mana with any guild? You only need to memorize about 8 power levels in sequential order.

When Bard PP messaging first changed, there was a script going around that used the "old" terms for you.

This is the one I have:

match hazy gentle rhythm
match dimly piping rhythm
match flickering spriteful melody
match shimmer light-hearted, shimmering melody
match slowly soothing melody
match pulsating deep, pulsating beat
match quickly intense, pulsating beat

match glowing strong, deep chords
match powerfully complex melodies
match softly cacophany of strident music
match shining blare of a full wind ensemble
match luminous myriad voices of woodwinds
match brilliant stringed instruments
match flaring quick burst of stacatto brass
match burning faint clash of sound
match brightly symphony of sonorous tones
match blazing flashy sequence of chords
match blinding deafening cacophany of sound resonating

I absolutely hate having to decipher 4 lines of musical muck just and then have to translate/convert it to more conventional information. In the very least, make it a toggle so those of us that want to see plain and straight forward can.

It's not like other guilds see "You sense the mana level is at 14 out of 20". They see garbage like "dimly flickering" or "slowly pulsating". I don't know what that means. I know what ours means.

I dont know what other guilds see so I'd rather keep it the way it is since that is what I know

Personally, I think every guild should have some sort of personalized PP message. What's the difference between shining and glowing, for example? Hard to know intrinsically. The Bard ones made the most sense to me. I'd like to see stuff like...

Rangers:
You feel the dull presence of life lurking in the background.
You sense a hazy presence of life mana sprouting like freshly-planted saplings.
You sense a warm cradle of life enveloping your senses.
You feel the overwhelming force of nature surrounding you like a warm blanket.

Warrior Mages:
The elemental mana in the area pulses like a dying candle.
The elemental mana carries faintly on the wind.

Etc etc. It would be really neat and give a little more definition to the individual use of mana, though I'm not sure how many people would be willing to rememorize mana levels for each guild (I would, it would be cool).

Everyone, including bards used to see it the same way. All the flowery stuff is fine if we were given a choice. I happen to prefer it the old way and would love a toggle to do so.

I love our power messaging. Its so pretty and it fits bards so well. I think the other guilds would want their own types of messages too. I usually even know what it means :) Its the other types that I dont understand.

I highlight key words in the messaging, bard and other guilds so I know how much mana is there. Low mana is in a dark red or purple color and as the mana gets better the colors go from red to orange to yellow to green.

That way I don't have to sit there and try to decipher the messages when I switch characters and all I have to do is look for a color. Works great for me.

I just made triggers that echo the standard power perception messaging for each corresponding bardic messaging. I still have NO idea what the bard messages mean!

I recorded myself saying the words "one" through "twenty" and fixed each sound to a power perc messaging. That's worked out great for me.

I took an almost 2 year hiatus. I didn't play anything as far as MMO's go for about a year and a half, then I started playing WoW... and I decided I wanted to play a real game and came back.

Probably will start Tantric up again soon, as soon as I find all my scripts. I am not rewriting them.

speaking of Power Perception, did Bards ever get that second way to learn it like Dart hinted at in 2005?

Yes and no.

I know that's confusing, but that's the honest answer. The more clear answer is that the mechanics are live and have been for years, but they are lacking sorting background support. I'm working on getting that done, but some resource issues need to be dealt with first.

Score!

Will this second way enable us to train it while in combat(in other words, where we don't have to powerWALK)?

I'm guessing it might be those divining (dowsing?) rods charlatans use to find water. Sounds flashy enough for us, at least, and PP training aside it'd even double as a proper RP prop.

Will it let you learn in combat? Under most situations, no, although it could possibly be used that way. I'm of the opinion we tie far too much to combat these days, and we need to start looking for cool and fun things outside combat as well. Only then can our plan for Bardic Global Domination be successful, as we are equally adept at both!

But... right now we have a way to train PP outside of combat, so the only other alternative is... in combat I thought? I mean, if someone's going to stand still and train PP with RT(which is what I am assuming the new way will do, unless it's like pyramids where we absorb exp by osmosis), we might as well just move a room and perceive to train the skill that way. Unless you give PP more training capability, what would be the point of this release? Just to give us pretty messaging, or let us not have to type in a room direction to train Power Perceive?

Options are nice, especially if they end up teaching more than PP (as I would hope divining rods would--FOCUS for MD skill, giving us a PP readout for PP experience as well.)

It is basically just another option, and the only reasons I'm doing it are (a) it's very cool, and (b) it's already live and has been for years. The only problem is that it has no support, and do to resource issues I can't add any at the moment. However, a fix to something else will address that issue, and I'll finally be able to get the necessary support added.
