MAULS 10/09/2010 12:31 PM CDT
So what's the benefit behind using a forged maul vs a mattock besides nothing?

It just makes me wonder what someone was thinking when making the MAUL template. Hey lets make a 2HB that is way underclassed to everything else and even make it worse than forged HBs!

I was thinking maybe the maul would get a little more impact because it has less in both puncture and edge than the Mattock, but nope, it's just worse in everything. except strength which it is slightly stronger.

Confusing to me.

Many of the templates are just terrible. I'm not entirely sure why, but it's not just limited to blunts.

The only templates I bother to make anymore are maces, morning stars, flails, and war mattocks.

As far as the forging system goes, none that I'm aware of. The maul does significantly less puncture and slice damage, a negligible amount less impact damage, is identical in balance, and is less suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength. Oh, it also weighs more, so I guess you could do more pummel damage. Perhaps the maul caps impact damage higher? I'm not sure, because all the heavy mauls I made were destroyed so quickly in actual combat that I never bothered to get exact stats on them.

It's a boar. It doesn't like you.

I went through and made varios weights, mauls from 50's up to 120. I only made like 8 so there were a lot of gaps but basically 50s-60s were p/p/g d/r, 70s-100 where p/p/s d/w, and above 100 (up to 120) was p/p/bc d/e. Comparing to the Mattock it's pretty lame.

I guess i could try heavier.

A maul is a two-handed blunt melee-ranged weapon.

You are certain that it could do:
dismal puncture damage
dismal slice damage
devastating impact damage

You are certain that the maul is terribly balanced and is superbly suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.

You are certain that the maul is rather reinforced against damage, and is in pristine condition.

The maul is made with metal.
You are certain that the maul weighs exactly 160 stones.
You are certain that the maul is worth exactly 900 lirums.
Roundtime: 8 seconds.

I just did a really heavy one to test, I guess I would need a heavy mattock to compare caps.

btw, the forging system isn't updated, so before doing the final step the appraisal was as follows:

If the steel head was finished right now, it appears as if it could do:
poor puncture damage
poor slice damage
devastating impact damage

The head would be dismally balanced and excellently suited for gaining extra attack power from your strength.

Here's the mattock I use:

A war mattock is a two-handed blunt melee-ranged weapon.

You are certain that it could do:
fair puncture damage
fair slice damage
devastating impact damage

You are certain that the mattock is terribly balanced and is incredibly suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.

You are certain that the war mattock is a bit safeguarded against damage, and is in pristine condition.

The war mattock is made with metal.
You are certain that the war mattock weighs exactly 108 stones.
You are certain that the war mattock is worth exactly 650 lirums.
Roundtime: 5 seconds.

So yeah it looks like the only benefit to a MAUL is that it's durability is better. If the impact caps a little higher than the Mattock, it's just that, very little, specially considering the new ranges.
