Backtraining 09/20/2004 10:50 AM CDT
Right now I'm backtraining my ME. I've got it up to 30, but I want it up to around where my other weapons are (the 80's). My other combat oriented experience are:

Leather Armor: 55 47% muddled
Parry Ability: 65 60% learning
Multi Opponent: 48 16% muddled
Evasion: 66 88% learning

And here are my stats:

Strength : 19 Reflex : 19
Agility : 21 Charisma : 9
Discipline : 15 Wisdom : 18
Intelligence : 17 Stamina : 17

I like to think I'm pretty well rounded, for the most part. Anyways, what do you all suggest I hunt for the backtraining to get it up to 80 ranks?

Beiswurms, then perhaps rams. The multi is the thing that will be a problem with backtraining.

Now- it is possible to cap out- or almost cap out- the wurms and go from there to blood wolves.

My multi is fairly low related to my other defenses (330's multi vs. 450's parry and evasion). I'd stick with raiders if the gen was consistent because 4 teach pretty well. Are there any other critters that would work in this range? I was thinking about moving to celpeze, but I'm pretty sure my defenses are lacking for learning multi there.

Thanks!

You could either move between raiders and bristlebacks for MO or you could easily handle 3 celpeze while using a dance or berserk with an MO bonus (just to be safe.)

You could survive in celpeze using badger. If you feel swarmed, then you can hunt the southern barricade which gens less.

I would move to celpeze if I were you. I hope your skinning is up to par.

Thanks for all of the feedback. One thing that I forgot to mention is that my reflexes are 40. Does that change the viability of hunting them for multi and defenses? Also, my skinning is in the low 330's. Is that enough?

Thanks again!

40 is on the low side, but I think if you use your abilities you'll manage with a few. And yes, 330 skinning should be enough to learn well there.

Yep 40 reflex is still viable in celpeze. Really you shouldnt need to dance anything but badger unless you want to train lower weapons.

Multi will be your only problem, as I was hunting Celpeze with sub-400 in all defenses. I don't like the southern barricade so much, mainly because it was hard(for me) to move multi back when I had 370ish ranks(at the time I needed 3 consistent celpeze in order to learn as well as I wanted). The north barricade is simply a dream, but you need to be packing some heavy Multi-O in order to take the swarms.

Personally, I'm sticking with raiders until either I get into the mid 400's in multi or it caps out before then. 5 ranks to 400 and going strong.

It is pretty easy to get a room with 3 celpeze in it in the south barricade area, but it might be harder to script. I just killed the stragglers until I found a good room. The north barricade is far from ideal for most people, as exciting as it may be.

What?? An endless hoard of opponents to fight? That's the kind of thing dreams are made out of...

Or at least, that's what mine are made out of. :(

I'm with Leilond. I only WISH I could find hunting that fast paced again.

Only the strong survive in the north barricade.

The point I was trying to make is that there's no need to wait to move straight to the north barricade area. And even when you can safely handle 4 celpeze at melee it still isn't necessarily ideal if you're sleeping half the time because of too much defensive experience.

Never slept once my entire time there :) Then again, I am a Barbarian. Not sure how other guilds do in combat 99% of the time.

Anyways, from my own personal experience, I opted to just avoid the south barricade all together. I don't like crowd control management. I'm lazy. I prefer to just stand there and let things try to beat on me than have to micromanage.

I ended up moving into the north barricade from raiders once I could dance with 4 without blinking an eye. Made my training go that much faster. But what was ideal for me is probably not best for everyone else.

I went the other route.

I went from 1 to 2 and 3 celpeze in the south barricade to 3 and 4 in the north barricade. Now I need 4 celpeze to learn all skills effeciently.

I have also expereinced several Celpeze up and down tweaks through my years hunting celpeze.

So far no other hunting ground has the feel of celpeze...

I have never used sleep to train in celpeze...If I lock up everything. I just hop across the river and backtrain stuff.

I'm not saying the north barricade isn't a great area, it is. I'm saying I think it is a mistake to wait until you can handle the north barricade when raiders aren't teaching all that well.

And yeah, barbarians are obviously at a huge advantage here because of skillsets.

You are almost in the same exact boat I am in.

40 reflex
358 multi
461 parry
443 evasion
365 light chain (backtraining to replace leather)
436 medium edge

Raiders is the only place I can train all of my skills and feel confident I won't get rolled by a zoha crit. I'd suggest staying in raiders until you hit 400 multi.

Also to clarify one point. I wouldn't suggest moving into Celps until you have 50 in reflexes. That'll help you avoid many of the zoha crits. That's what I've been told by good sources and based on my personal experience I find it to be accurate.

Just an FYI 'zoah crits' were removed a long time ago. What you are probably referring to are open rolls.

And open rolls that can one shot kill your character occur in raiders also. Every critter including ship's rats will occasionally "stumble into better position just as a flash of light temporarily disorients you" but these open rolls are typically not lethal until you are beyond caracals.

You have been vanquished. That is all.

All I am saying is that celps have a much higher open roll chance than raiders do. To date I've died twice in raiders in about 60 days time. One death was to a broadsword the second to an unarmed raider. I cannot recall ever going a day without dying twice when hunting celps.

As far as I know, every creature has the exact same chance of getting an open roll per attack. You notice it more in celpeze because they can generate a more powerful attack.

Celpeze are just like Black Leucros--When they hit, they hurt. I avoided black leucros specifically because of this, but I'm afraid celpeze are just too good in the defense/offense training department.

I've got a strange feeling a capped Naming of Tears might be the winner in celps, judging by how many people complain of one-hit kills in there.

Well, a capped Cage of Light didn't eliminate my deaths, but everything helps.

Curious, but roughly at what skill level did you exactly leave raiders at? I currently live for four raiders--in fact, I wish more would engage me. Just crossed 400 multi, and all of my defenses are above 410 with Evasion near the mid 400's.

430's defenses and 400 multi. It was insanely painful getting to that point. 40 reflexes and badger dance and I was surviving just fine with 4 in the north barricade.

As a side note, if you're already in the 450~ range for evasion it will just get even slower. I know a few friends who actually took a weapon to 500 in raiders but it made pulling teeth look enjoyable.

This was also around the time when we had 4 or 5 of us on the second floor + alts in refractive field. The spawn sucks pretty bad last I checked.

If you have something equivalent to badger dance you should be OK.

For myself 450 shield/HP, 340 evasion, 360 parry, 340 multi and every paladin buffer spell in our arsenal max casted. (only takes 6 minutes or so to spellup like that) I was able to actively be killing while all 4 were on at melee but after a bit that injuries did mount up. It took about 20-30 ranks to be more comfortable. Was working with 40 reflex.

Reflexes does wonders. With 50 I'm able to dance with 4 raiders with only 200's in multi.
