Cyclic spells don't seem to be awarding any experience in the specific magic skills associated with them. I tried using Guardian Spirit, Regenerate, and Aesandry Darlaeth at about as much mana as I can manage for a while, and I only gained Life Magic and Attunement experience, no Utility or Augmentation. Guardian Spirit did award TM experience when it was fighting stuff.
