"giving" anything to an NPC which can result in learning trading skill, or getting coin from it has a certain bug to it.

Giving a gem pouch, giving components <for thieves> from boxes, giving a bundle to the tanners, all seem to result in the same bug:
>give mags
Mags clucks her tongue, takes your branch, and hands you 19 coins for it.
The firewood peddler Mags ignores your offer.
